Darrell Yngsdahl-director. 52 The 75—76 school year was a special time for the Polaris. The staff succeeded each issue in bringing back the spirit, and style of journalism, that is the heritage of the Polaris. In addition to the regular papers, a twelve page Heritage issue was produced. This issue exposed the chronology of North High, the Northside community and where it is today; comparing traditions and achievements, and taking a look at the changes brought about by progress. All staff members have developed a greater knowledge of journalism, and a greater understanding and appreciation for the ol1 blue and white. The 75 — 76 Polaris staff will be remembered for building up pride in North Side High, North High, and North Community High School.----The dedication advisor of the Polaris is Mr. Roger Mahn. Members of the staff were editor Phyllis Sloan, Pam Stevens, Greg Westbrook, Renee Archambault, Virginia Klaustermeier, Charlotte McGregor, James Jackson, Tim Alexander, Tyka Nelson, Jenniffer Gay, Desi McCoy, Margie Kruger, and Ardana Gross. T.A.N.S. (True American Native Students) has been functioning at North successfully for seven years. This year it has given support to expansion of the Indian Studies class taught by Gary Lussier, Kirk Nelson and Bob Pierce. The group meets weekly and has sponsored a wild rice banquet and an auditorium to sponsor St Paul's Red School House. 53 55 The audio-visual crew and the stagecraft class work behind the scenes. The audio-visual crev delivers materials to classrooms and video-tape during auditoriums and staff meetings. The stagecraft crew built the sets for West Side Story and Rosoncrantz and Gildenstern. They also handle the lighting for auditoriums. These skillful groups are advised by Kay Goldstein, John King and Roger Mahn. Classes at the School Of Survival or The New Alternatives provide the fundamentals of a high school education while providing an alternative and challenging approach to learning. It offers classes tailored to the needs of graduation and to the interests of students. Each student is a member of a small group that meets daily and information is shared and extra-curricular activities and field trips arc planned. The '76 Polaris Annual staff members were Sally Wetzel, Larry Steele, Gwen Clark, Doug Brophy, Chezron Jarrett, Richard Easton, Debra Eastman, Denise Ittner, Forrie Engman, and George Ash. The staff would like to thank David Banks studio, Cliff Wilder and Chuck Robinson for their professional help. The staff would also like to thank all the advisors and coaches who cooperated to make the '76 Polaris a success. Two of North's spirited and supportive clubs are the Pep Club and the N-Club. The Pep Club, with Mrs. Christopherson as the advisor, started out the year with weekly meetings and enthusiasm for spots activities. They sold blue and white pom poms and made a colorful float for homecoming. The N-Club was busy with working in the concession stands and planning future activities. They sponsored the exciting Sadie Hawkins Dance, which was a good success and a lot of fun. They hope to make it an annual event. They also sponsored a speculation bus for a hockey game, which enabled many fans to see a game. With the profits they make from the various activities, they hope to hold a banquet for all the Polar athletes. Some future activities are car washes and an announcer to give sports results in the morning. They want to give the less noticed sports more encouragement and recognition. The advisors of N-Club are Ms. Sworsky and Mr. McCoy. Interim Day '76 took place on a mild Winter day in January. Buses lined the Irving Avenue side of North. Staff and students got out of the classroom and took off to Skateland, Snowcrest. We went snow tubing, bowling, swimming and to the movies. It was the most successful Human Relations day ever. West Side Story a modern play bases on Romeo and Juliet was presented at North November 14,15,21, and 22. A very complicated and beautiful stage design was supervised and built by Roger Mahn and his stage crew. It was a community achievement that combined the efforts of the Metropolitan Cultural Arts Center Shoestring Theatre and North. 62 There is an active, involved and concerned group of people in the Multi-Ethnic club. As a club, they have had a dinner at Advisor Bill Anderson's home, a picnic at Wirth Park and went to Edina East High School for Interim Day. Tammie Smith led the team in assists. Pennie and Ardana led the team in scoring. Ardana Gross made the All-City and WCCO All-State team. Coach Ben McCov said I was really proud of this team—they worked hard and showed plenty of determination. Not only did North clinch the first place varsity position at the city cross country meet, but also won the first place position in the sophomore meet. Thanks to Paul Riddle and Randy Ferber, this is the first time in 28 years that North has had a city champion in cross country. Paul Riddle also finished 15th in the state competition. There are only 3 graduating seniors —Jerry Carlin, Paul Riddle, and Randy Holt. Coach Jacobsen said he has a hard working team and expects a good season next year. It seems to be the same story for the girl's cross country team which went from 3 members and not placing to 10 members and second in the city this year. I hope some of the players learn that what they put into something is what they get out of it. I also hope they learn that one must never let up and always give it their best shot. This is what life is all about, in roaring a family, earning a living and being part of a community. I would like to praise the young men who stayed out and finished the season. This proves they are really true champions. Coach Ben McCoy It was good to have a total of 55 potential athletes show and participate in the sophomore football program. There are four new teachers, Mr. Mirocha, Mr. Jones, Mrs. Gustafson, and Mr. Noren. Mr. Noren took Mr. Holtz's place, while he was on sabatical last fall. Mr. Holtz is back now and an expert on new and innovative methods. (Mr. Butterfield after thirteen years, at North is retiring. Mr. Butterfield is the youngest 65 year old around.
