He's a another man thats willing to help anyone at any time, seems as though wo have a lot of that around here?!! Dannie Gomez is one of our new Assistant Principals from Lincoln, and together with the rest of our Administration he's done an exceptionally good job. James Rogers is an Administrative Assistant and directs the PPC program. He works with students, teachers, and administration to make North a better place to be. Who is that man that is always pulling strings and getting something for someone? Who is that man who led us into a new, nine million dollar building? It's David Roffers, our Principal and we think he's done an excellent job. It takes a lot to supervise such an enormous project and he's done the best anyone could ever do. Thanks Mr. Roffers! Even though everyone at North seems a slight bit confused four times a year at registration, Larry Zimmerman knows what's goin on. Just ask him, and he'll straighten you out. He's our Curriculum Coordinator. 1. Melva Hadley 2. James Kanwischer 3. Joan Rudd 4. Edwin Nelson 5. Clareen Nyquist 6. Garla Frierson 7. Renee Fredrickson 7. We've got spirit how about you? If you happened to be passing through the south commons on a Wednesday or Thursday after school, that phrase and many others would sound familiar. The Varsity cheerleaders spent those two days after school perfecting cheers to spur on North's spirit. Being a cheerleader wasn't always easy due to hurried dinners, sore hands, chilling weather and many responsibilities but the reward of a winning team or a good yelling section more than made up for the hardships. There is more to North than classes and being the cheerleading advisor. I could see the girls work together to unify North. Sherry Durso, Varsity Advisor. The girls involved were A. I got to know people and I got used to being in front of people. The 1973 Polarettes worked hard to get together. They were enthusiastic and all agreed that although it was difficult to coordinate ten pairs of legs it was a great opportunity to perform. ■74 was a great year for the Polaris. Not only did the staff put out the regular papers, but they also put out a special 4 page Snowweek paper. The Snowweek paper described the activities among which was a program sponsored by the Polaris. The program was intitled The First Annual Polaris Talent Show . The talent show was held on the seventh of February during lunch In the Auditorium. Five acts performed for the first prize of $25. The spectators chose the winner by clapping. This was an effort by the staff to help bring them out of debt. With the help of the school financing the newspaper to a greater extent this year, the newspaper was able to finish the year with the smallest debt in many years. The 74 news-paper staff will be remembered as the staff that tried to put it all back together again. The staff from RIGHT TO LEFT are: Becky Peterson, Marv Jo Haugen-co-editors. Clifton Few. Eighteen students in the advanced modern dance class have had the opportunity to perform. With the move into the new building, the students performed for the city physical education teachers January 29 in the auditorium. In May they gave a school performance. Ms. Mary has you work really hard , Rhonda Willis. I really love to dance, Ms. Mary is a great teacher, even if you are'nt feeling good she makes you work because its for your own benefit. Regina Dunn. 59 MODERN DANCE MODERN DANCE MODERN DANCE LlI M O SNO-DAZE! That one week each winter when all true Polars have their fun. This year one of the challenges issued was that of a free-throw contest, between Principal Dave Roffers and Assistant Principal Dannie Gomez (ABOVE). Ice fishing had a cold turn-out as shown by a big catch, and Mr. Buelow and Mr. Yngsdahl empty handed. Marc Dixon gets down during the Auditorium before the crowning of the King. And now, ladies and gentlemen.... In perfect health? On November 21st, there was a Battlo of the Sexes . It was a tennis match between Ms. Nancy Carter, student and Mr. John Conover, teacher. There was a great deal of practice and publicity to make it a successful match. It was a challenge, but I really enjoyed myself. It was something different. Nancy Carter. Tennis, anyone? This match helped develop human relations for the school. Athletes should get involved in non-team sports as well as team sports. The student vs. teacher match seemed to create a lot of student and teacher interest. The winner was Nancy Carter. Set scores were 6-2 and 6-3. This project, School and Community Theater Two, was founded by the Council on Quality Education with this stated objective in mind . . To reduce the incidence of racially sterotyped perceptions among members of two contiguous racially differentiated communities (North and Northeast Minneapolis) by establishing a pattern of intense and cooperative interaction (School and Community Theater Two) among those who participate. A second play, Lillies of the Field will be produced this spring to complete the project. Essentially, the project hopes to emphasize the similarities rather than the differences between two dissimilar neighborhoods by demonstrating people from both areas can work together in concert and harmony to produce an exciting and satisying result. i r i If a person tried to describe open registration, it would be literally impossible. Many students who have never been involved in other North activities showed their talents in organization, entertainment and seriousness this week. There were two auditoriums. The first one dealt with entertainment and the second was more of an educational experience. As Joyce Johnson, one of the advisors, put it: Black History week was a combination of Black talents. NORTH IS A SPECIAL PLACE North is a tough place. The new building hasn't changed that. But that toughness forces us all to be strong. Some people are quick to point out our problems. Those people, for example, say North's academic standards are not as high as they were when they went to North. That MAY be true, but what that means to me is, we just have a greater chance to help those who need help. Other schools actually suffer because they are not offered that opportunity to help each other. Most other schools also lack what North has In abundance, and that is diversity. Racial, cultural, and philosphical diversity. We don't look alike, dont' act alike, we are a true community and that difference is our specialness. That difference also causes problems but there is a frequent feeling of conern and care within this school. There are very few places that are as different, as tough, and as concerned as North High School. 115 North is a special place. It was wild... Seeing old friends was like meeting new ones. I didn't even make the class play when I was here at NHS.. Robert Vaughn. Homecoming 73-74 created many new memories and kept the old ones alive. 8,000 alumni returned for a sentimental journey, including old teachers and celebrities such as: Robert Vaughn, John Gallos and Maxine Andrews. Saturday was the day for alumni. They jammed the halls and auditorium programs. Joined together were alumni who had hopes of encountering and renewing old friendships. The programs were concluded with the alumni joining in and singing Loyality . From the auditorium of the old North, the alumni were given guided tours of the new North by Student Guides. Saturday was concluded with a buffet supper and dance at the Leamington Hotel in the evening. On Sunday afternoon, many tired out, but spirited alumni gathered on Hobbs Field for an auction. Everything from old yearbooks to doorknobs were sold. The Homecoming weekend left. Students, teachers and alumni were made aware of the fact that North is truly unique. North High has the only permanent high school Alumni Association in this area. The Association, as such, dates back to June 12, 1907 at which time the Class of 1891 held a meeting to elect officers and form the constitution. The North Side High School Alumni Association was formed as a social and literary group for the promotion of good fellowship. Today, it is no longer a literary society, but rather a body that helps in any possible way where it may be needed by the school. It has no dues, there are no paid workers, and every graduate of North automatically becomes a member of the association. The Board is comprised of members of various classes. It has in recent years been a selfless contributer to North s extracurricular organizations and to scholarship programs. It contributes one one thousand dollar scholarship to a North senior every year. It is a group of friendly beautiful people who make North a special place. The 1974 Polaris staff would like to thank Lorelei Hjermstad and the Association -you are very special. The Alumni will furnish a list of your classmates when it is time for the five year reunion. They will help cover printing costs and mailing costs announcing the reunion and can help to locate members of your class. Please send address and name changes to the alumni, in care of North High, and they will be noted on your class list.
