The once homeroom representative Student Council was no more. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: L to R. Michelle I ase, Sue Hartfiel, Julie Simmons, Tom Brophy 4i u Jerry I etoumeau The Senior Council in the past was always made up of senior class officers. That was until 71. Like the student council, die senior council also made i change This year any member of the senior class could participate in senior council. •—: Hi Hi filial Senior Council Working hard to improve their skills, the Girls Tennis Team, went through lo« g, tiring, muscle aching practices. Under their Coach, Mrs. Kathy Sworsky, they went a long way. Practices were held after school at North Commons and on their own. They won some of their matches improving from them. Tennis balls bouncing and racquets swinging were only part of the game. The girls on the team made an effort and Stayed with it, said team member, Sue (1 Icrbio) Martfiel. Team members were: Jill Ruchaldt, Sue Ilartfiel, LindaNcubcrgcr, Pam Flagle, Kari Arndt, l!)oiothy Mulray, Prisclla Carlson, Linda I lendrickson, Pat Ekro, Sue Yanzcr, Denise Russell, and Linda Pierson. In the Swim of Things Really in the swim of tilings was this years team. North has had the advantage of practicing in the new Franklin Junior High swimming pool. Franklin's swimming pool is Olympic size: twenty-five yards long, and five lanes. The feeling of fresh cool water all around you is very relaxing. stated Helen Gregor, member of the team. With Coach, Mrs. Keating, the team improved. They won many ribbons in their practice meets throughout the season and made it to the finals. The teams best events were the free style, breast-stroke, and relays. TOP PICTURE: TOP ROW: LEFT TO RIGHT: Elizabeth Desantcll, Helen Gregor, Cheryl Jensen, Pat Tunge, Sherry Chilstorm, Becky 15 Dcsantell, Sue Quist. BOTTOM ROW: Robin Gates, Coach Mrs. Shirley Keating, Denise Chilstorm. Cross country was led by captains Peter Hoag and Dewane Pagel. According to them, it was a hard working team which showed great improvement over the season. The team practiced every day in spite of dogs, cats, and kids throwing rocks. As a result of these many hours of practice, the team placed eighth at the district meet. Dewane Pagel, our number one runner, took tenth place out of one hundred-twenty runners in districts. This proved to be Coach Richard Jacobson's best team in his three years as North’s cross-country coach. RIGHT: Coach Richard Jacobson, FAR RIGHT: Dewane Pagel. Football Was. . . . . . hard work. . . . good plays. . . . wet and muddy. M . . . Coach Richard Thompson. . . . scoring. . . . loyalty. . . . fabulous players. 17 disappointed, but 'They always seemed to shake it off and come back, when things looked the worst , said Coach So veil. Coach Sovcll didn't have very much to work with at first, because he had a whole new offensive line. With the talent that was available, the single wing, which is an old formation that is very hard to defend against, was very useful for the North High Polars. Defense improved a great deal throughout the whole season. We could have been undefeated said Coach Sovell with a little luck . The West and Central games had a few errors which lost the games for us. As far as the football side is concerned, nobody outplayed us , was Coach Sovells final statement. Some of the talent Coach Sovell was lucky to get included: Kevin Smith, who made All City All Metropolitan, All State, and he was voted most valuable player by his teammates; Bill Patterson, All City; Jeff Fortin, All City; Gary Lussier, was awarded the Marti Elmquist Award, which is an award for the player with the best citizenship and most involved in community activities. With Scott King and Rory Olson as the seventy seventy-two seventy-three captains, next year's season should be a bright one. TOP ROW: Mike Kcttcr, Ernie Harper, Richard Luka, Bill Patterson Joe Erdahl, Richard Rakow, Gary Lussier, Alan Smith, Robert Boyland, Assistant Coach Mr. Chacolis FOOTBALL They played well together , was the biggest and most important factor to Coach Don Sovell. The football team was off to a bad start as they were defeated by the West High Cowboys, six to zero. Hard practices for a week made the team get back into things as they tied Southwest, six-six. North's Polars, at this point were 26 An unofficially planned breakfast at Uncle John's was a filling success” for the thirty Polars that attended. Excitement was much in evidence as breakfast was gobbled and everyone scurried back to North for one of the year's most exciting days. Classes went on with time moving very slowly. First hour ran out and the auditorium was on! Cheerleading, M.C.'s, Polarcttes, Mr. Sovell, Mr. DcLapp, and Princesses were all a part of the scene. DeLappitate, DeLappitate, DeLappitate the Cards” was part of the faculty's skit to help boost the spirit of Homecoming. The alumni was well represented at the auditorium and the game. The auditorium ended with the traditional playing of loyalty. As classes went on, so did Homecoming. A little drizzle at the game failed to dampen the spirits of all those attending or to stop the Polars. Cut the Cards” was the slogan and that is exactly what the Polars did. The final score; North, forty-three; Marshall-University, six. Halftime was one of the biggest features of Homecoming, as the band started with a fanfare and marched across the field and ended up with an ”N” formation for the introduction of the Queen candidates and the crowning of Queen Linda Cilreath. Homecoming festivities went on as the attendance was good for listening and dancing to the music of the Purple Haze . As the last moments of the dance arrived so did the last moments of another successful Homecoming at North. Members of the Homecoming committee were; Sue Arenz, Tom Brophy, Sue Burke, Priscilla Carlson, Debbie Comstock, Paula Dehn, Shelley Doherty, Pam Flagle, Val Harrison, Sue Hartfiel, Peter Hoag, Chris Krier, Kris Kukar, Gayle Kvamlov, Terry Letoumeau, Marilyn Magneson, Valinda McCarter, Karen McKinney, Jackie Minikus, Cathie Olson, Cathy Otteson, Dewane Pagel, Robin Raum, Shannon Riley, Greg Schommer, Julie Simmons, Cheryl Smith, Michael Turner, Anita Urvina, LuAnn Wilcox, Sue Yanzcr, and Linda Zachow. Advisors; Mr. Richard Kramer, Mr. Steve Permuth, and Mrs. Debbie Winberg. Vv The band improved a great deal, despite changing directors during the year. It was a very busy year for the band as they played at all the home football and basketball games. Also, playing at the Dayton's Jubilee Sale the band made various other appearances in the Junior High's. The band council is responsible for all of the events and things that the band docs. They take all of the problems and solve them to how they think it will be best for the band. Then they are brought up to the band for a final decision. Thanks to these people, the band had a very exciting year. The council included the following: Tom Brophy, President; Jackie Minikus, Vice President; Mike Parenteau, Drum Major; Gayle Kvamlov, Secretary; Ernie Harper, Tresurer; Mike Day; Jan Galka, Sue Quist; Mary Rhudd. Band Members were: LEFT TO RIGHT: FROM CENTER-MOST HALF -CIRCLE: Lynn Clary, Bev Wulff, Tara Lind vail, Mary Cambell, Judy Bell, Gloria Hardy, Sue Nelson, Gladys Hardy, Murrin Chilstrom. Y-Teens has always been an organization for girls, but this year the club invited boys to join. One of the successful things they did together was a car wash. To start off the year the council held an initiation for new members which ended up as an initiation for the council. A dedicated council, and two chapters, small but enthusiastic, undertook the tasks of selling caramel apples, pennants, and garters. Coed overnights, hayridcs, rollerskating, basketball games with other schools, and ski trips were some of the activities planned. With all these events, Y-Teens had a great and exciting year. 54 Y-Teens 55 Polaris -Staff Editor-In-Chief...............Peter Hoag Business Manager....Debbie Comstock News Editor.....................Sue Burke Editorial Editor.....Gayle Kvurnlov Feature Editor.........Barb Haugan Sports Editor..........Mark Masica Photographer...........Sue Hartficl Cartoonist......................Jan Galka Reporters.......Robin Monson, Kathy Morales, LaVonne Nyborg, Mary Smith, Ron Turner, Nancy Wulff, Sue Wynns Advisor........................Roger Mahn Staff members worked hard all year pasting up layouts, meeting deadlines, and finding interesting things for the students to read. Without help from the school budget, the staff had to raise their own fluids. As one staff member said, Our main job was to inform the people of what was going on in and out of school. It fulfilled what it set out to do. Better than last year. Needed more pictures. Needed more articles. It was good. I liked it. These were some of the comments that you heard when you asked about the Newspaper. 56 57 ■ r 58 59 Mr. Roger Mahn kept busy this year directing two plays and two-one act plays. The plays were Once Upon A Mattress, which is a retelling of the fairy tale, Princess and the Pea. It is about a small kingdom ruled by a talkative queen, a mute king, and a prince. His mother would not let him get married. Until, along comes a special princess, that wins the hearts of everyone. The other play was Run Boy Run which was about a gang in an alley, where one man tried to rule the alley. These plays all had a great turn out! On J anuary sixth and seventh Rim Bov Run was performed and had an audiance of 1,000 people for two nights. Once Upon a Mattress which was not performed at the time of this writing, but will be performed on April 11 and 12, will be expected to have a much larger audiance. The two one act plays were performed in the fall, and also had a great crowd. The cast for Once Upon a Mattress was Dave Smith; Ministrcl, A1 Fisher; Knight Pantomime characters, Carol C Cheryl Tienscn; Jeanne Bazniet; Princess No. 12, Lady in Waiting, and the Nightangale of Samarkand, David La La Vasseur; Wizard, Sue Burke; Lady Larkon, Pam Flagle; Queen Aggravain, Ron Turmer; Prince Dauntless, Jim Combs; King Sextimus the silent, Tony Miranda; Jester, JULIE SIMMONS: PRINCESS WINNIFRED, Joe Ray, Sir Harry, Mary Comeau; Kitchen wench, Joe Ray; Sir Luce, Forest Little; 1st knight, Jeff Porraczo; 2nd Knight, A1 Fisher; 3rd knight, Cheryl Smith; Lady Rowena, Patty Tinge, Lada Morril, Vikiy Morales, Lady in Waiting; Jackie Minikus; Lady in Waiting Jeanette Lokken; Lady in Waiting; Lucile, Patty Sumpter; Lady in Waiting; Mabelle, Janet Archambault; Emily, Kitty Williams; Lady Beatrice, Gayle Kvamlov, Estelene Bell, Val Sawyer, Lavonne Nyberg, Sue Jameson; Ladies in Waiting, Sir Studly was Jean King. With this purpose in mind they visited many German restaurants, had the yearly initiation party along with winter activities. The biggest event was the Christmas party in which all language clubs participated. PICTURED AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE: LEFT TO RIGHT: Farley Fait, Janet Archambault, David Kautzman, Jennene Rick, Terry McCoy, Cheryl Davis, Richard Newman, Helen Gregor, Mark Kiesling, Robert Lindstrand, John Halliday, Brad Melland, Denise Russel, Carol Subialks, Karen McKinney, Barb Oelschlager, Kathy Jerome, Nancy Cameron, Marian Johnson, Advisor: Mr. Gene Wieber. Starting out, the Spanish club held an election for executive officers. After taking care of that, they really got down to business. There were meetings at homes with Mexican food and fun; skating, tobogganing and horsebackriding parties, visits to Mexican restaurants and field trips. It was a year of funfilled experience. Norwegian Club French Club Class time was the only time the Norwegian club could meet. Despite this handicap, it proved to be an interesting year. Activities included Norwegian speakers, parties with Norwegian food and customs, visits to Norwegian establishments. The biggest event of the year was the language party. PICTURED AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE: LEFT TO RIGHT: Sue Nelson, Mary Rudd, Sue Quist, Carrie Furo, Pat Eickholt, Cheryl Peterson, Advisor: Mrs. Britt Lundgren, Tare Lind vail, Teena Ringham Terry Letourneau, Randall Hanson, Brad Melland. This year the French club has been very active. There were visits to various French restaurants, gourmet cooking, parties in French custom and all of the winter fun sports. Much of the year was dedicated to preparing the Language Christmas party. Accomplishing their objective, the French club shared the many customs and traditions along with the language itself. As principal Mr. DeLapp tries to keep the school running smooth although there are some heavy trials. Mr. Sheridan gets along pretty good with the students at North. Mrs. Riley who does her best to help any and everybody as Administrative Assistant. ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN When asked what type of Job he does, Mr. Steven Permuth asked himself the same question. My job, now what is my job? After a few moments of thinking, he came to a conclusion. As Administrative Intern, Mr. Permuth's job is to work out the budget, represent North High at community meetings, help with extra curricular activities, and head the tutorial program. COORDINATOR OF CURRICULUM Students have changed their attitude towards school now, thanks to Mr. Lawerence Zimmerman. He has helped to program teachers as well as students. Mr. Zimmerman is one of the reasons students get to choose their classes each quarter. He also co-ordinates the program changes. COUNSELORS AND SOCIAL WORKERS No matter where you go, or what you do, you will always need someone to lean on at some time. At North, these people are provided for you. The Counselors and Social Workers are there to straighten out many of your problems, from a mix-up in your schedule, to a misunderstanding between two students. NURSE Is there a doctor in the house? No, there was not, but there was a capable nurse. Mrs. Faith was the person to see in case of illness. Her office, located on second floor kept busy through out the year. It looked as if Mrs. Faith had her work cut out for her. HALL CUARDS Good question, good answer. Was the reply given by the hall guards; Mr. Wallace Collier, Mr. Charles Williams, and Mr. Charles Smith, when asked about their jobs. They tried to decide among themselves. Finally they did. To aide teachers in their absence and to just generally keep peace at North. As Charlie Williams stated in his usual good nature, I'm Just an old meany. NOT PICTURED are Mrs. Joan Rudd; Social Worker, Mrs. Barbara Fraser; Counsler. Secretaries, Librarians, Our Secretarial Staff at North worked together to assist teachers, students, and visitors whenever possible. However, each member of this staff had her own job. BELOW LETT; PICTURED LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. Margaret Mumm is Mr. Zimmermans secretary and does all the data processing. What would we do without these ladies telling us where to go to find tliis book and where to go to find that book? They try hard to make the library an orderly and fun place to study. Janitors With all of the mud the football players brought in; the leftover hall decorations; and other various scraps we leave laying around at sometime or another, it's nice to know that we have such a diligent, hard working crew of janitors. Cooks We should really thank these women. They did the best they could with what they had to work with! Cooking for that many people each day wasn’t easy, and you must admit we never want without lunch. 86 87 This year the badminton team showed enthusiasm and ability. Under the watchful eye of Miss Mary Josephson the team practiced to perfection. After their 3-4 season, the team retired with Linda Neburger winning with a record of 7-0. They are cross country, jumping, and slalom. Cross country skiing combines endurance, technique and strength as the participants race between three and six miles. The cross country team from North was strong this year at State. Peter Hoag finished seventh and Dewane Pagel finished only twenty seconds behind to take fifteenth, to give the team fourth place at State. Ski jumping is judged equally on distance and form. Andy Desmond took the city jumping crown to lead North to a fourth place in district competition. Fast reflexes and speed make slalom an exciting part of skiing. The slalom team was young this year with four sophomores and two freshmen competing for North. All the snow and cold made skiing an exciting sport for all cold weather enthusiasts. PICTURED IN THE TEAM PICTURE AT LEFT: Peter Hoag, Andy Desmond, Ed Muenchow, Robert Knox, Dewane Pagel, Jerry Salmcy, Brad Erickson, Brian Holmer, Robert Vaugh, Robert Olsen, Marty Anderson, and Coach J. Because of a change in city swimming regulations, junior high students were new additions on the team. These young swimmers kept pace with the returning team of last year. Diving for Benito's was Kent Mouse Westberg, one of the junior liigh Polars from Franklin. Kent was ranked in the top ten divers in city. Captains this year were four returning seniors; Marty Hartfiel, David Kautzman, Todd Henning and Kevin Fair. Art Brandt, a teacher at Phillips Junior Hgih, returned as coach for another improved and very successful year. Other leaders on the team were; Terry Letourneau, record of 15-4 and taking 2nd team all-city and Bob Lund with a record of 10-3 who would have went to regionals had he not been injured. North finished the year trying for 4th place after having been rated llth in city. Because of change in rules, North had sLx junior high students, all lettering on the team. Hard work and desire made up for lack of experience. said Mr. Chakolis. 100 101 The 1972 Gymnastics team with seven returning letter-men accomplished a 2nd place standing in city and regions. Practicing since September for an hour and a half a day were; Jim Stevens in tumbling, trampoline, and floor exercise; Jim Rasmusson in tumbling, high bar, horse, and all around; Mark Cosert in tumbling, floor exercise; Terry Hanson on rings; Mitch Peterson on parallel bars; Ricky Palmer on high bar and Jim Boyd on the horse. All performed well enough to go to the state tournament. Led by coach Mr. Larry Harste and assisted by Co capt; Mitch Peterson and Jim Rasmusson, the team had a successful year. Other members were: Dan Berg, rings, high bar; Jeff Brenny, rings, floor exercise; Ron Hanson, horse; Randy Hanson, horse; Karl Jex, parallel bars; Kirk Waskey, rings; Jeff Renman, horse; Ken Hagg, high bar. 102 t BASKETBALL This years' basketball team, led by Coach Dick Thompson, had another fine season going undefeated in conference play for the second consecutive year. They were undefeated throughout the season, at 19-0, and played and lost to St. Paul Murray for the Twin City title. From there they went on to regionals. Making the All-City squad this year were: Kevin Smith, guard; Tom Connors, guard; and Charles Scott at center. On the coaching staff along with Dick Thompson, was Don Sovell, Junior Varsity coach. Every night, at Franklin Jr. High School, they had practice from 4 to 6 p. m. Hard practice, plus playing well together, made the team. They tied for fifth place in the city conference. In non-conference play their record was eleven wins-nine losses. The games that the team did lose, were only lost by two to six points. The biggest game of the year was against Central. It was a strenuous, but exciting game all the way to the end. But North pulled through with a final victory of 64-61. With the frequent starters; Rod Whaley, Mark Dixon, Quincy Boyle, Gene King, and Charles Lynn, and the help of all the others on die team, it turned out to be a successful year. This year, Sno-Wcek was cut to two days because it was thought that this would condense it and make it more exciting. The two days of activity were similar to homecoming in that, Sno-Daze is like a Winter Homecoming. Challenges were forfeited, broken, and lost. The sophomore cheerleaders took second place in their hopscotch contest against the sophomore basketball team; as Gene King was the only player to show up, and he won. The Senior class challenged the faculty to a volleyball game and had to postpone it because of a badminton meet in the girls gym. The game was played the next day, and the seniors lost. The band challenged the freshman class to a broom-ball game. Because of the faculity, senior volleyball game, the seniors that were in band that were going to play broomball game, but couldn't, so the freshmen won because the band failed to show. The Administration backed out of the egg throwing contest against the senior class officers. The North High basketball team had the challenge of playing Henry High School basketball team in which North won the game 69-60. The wrestling team defeated Henry 24-20. An auditorium which was held on January 28th, included the crowning of Sno-King, Kevin Smith, cheerleaders, the band, and the introduction of winter sports. All this completed the Sno-Daze events making it very eventful. Enthusiasm and spirit was obviously what the cheerleaders had this year. Lead by captain Valerie Sawyer they helped prove that they really did have school spirit. Cheering at the few pep fests we had, and at sporting events during the year kept them busy: Especially when there were three or more sports activities going on in one evening. One special event the cheerleaders took part in was to cheer for North's undefeated 1907 football team at Charlies Exceptional restaurant. Besides the cheerleaders were the three polar bears that really kept the crowd laughing and staying in spirit even if we lost a game. With a lot of pep the B squad cheerleaders encouraged the sophomore teams to win. Their advisor was Mrs. Wyrowski. VARSITY SQUAD. H. AA.) which was founded in 1891. It is an organization envied by many schools... in fact, as far as is known, North is the only permanent public high school alumni association in the Twin Cities... perhaps in the state of Minnesota. The alumni group exists solely to be of help to the school, its students and alumni. The Hammond Organ which graces the auditorium and the flagpole on Hobb's Field were gifts of the organization. Homecoming has always been financed by the Alumni and through the years many school groups have been helped when they appealed for assistance, both financially and otherwise. WHAT CAN THE ALUMNI DO FOR YOU? When it is time for that five year of fifty year reunion, the alumni can furnish with a complete list of your classmates. North's Alumni can lend you an amount of money to cover the initial cost of printing and mailing literature announcing your reunion. Many times they can help you locate members of your class. WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR THK ALUMNI? You can send any new addresses you might acquire, and name changes from marriages, etc. Just send a card to us in care of North High, and we will see to it that this is noted on your class list. When your reunion is over, a committee must send a list of new and corrected addresses for the Alumni to keep in the files so that the people who work on one of the next reunions can come to N. H. A. A. for the up-dated list. This is MOST important. Lastly you can become active in joining our Alumni Board. Whether or not the Alumni Association continues is depending upon A Great Tradition ANNUAL ALUMNI REUNION FOR ALL CLASSES -- FOURTH THURSDAY IN MAY 8:00 P.M. AT NORTH EVERY YEAR. BELOW: Fifty Year Class Receiving Diplomas at Annual Reunion. Graduates attained distinction in many fields. PICTURED ABOVE are three of our distinguished alumni. Other alumni include; Sid Hartman, sports editor at the Minneapolis Star and Tribune newspaper; Forrest Powers, columnist for Minneapols Star Newspaper; Harry Davis, Minneapolis school board member; and Robert Short, hotel owner and owner of the Washington Red Skins (baseball). Starting with an enthusiastic crew, we set out to learn the trials of making a yearbook. First we learned to crop pictures and build lay-outs. Screaming for pictures and writing copy, we slowly gathered all we needed; (missing deadlines to get the best was often found throughout the year.) It was trying at times and didn't always go easy, but we gained from the experience and learned to smile through it.
