Day of Abi'-nce. Drama Has Successful Year. Curse you, Jack Dalton was the cry heard for weoks after the play production of the melodrama. Despite the numerous chonges in the cast, the play was performed well. Actors and actresses alike worked hard toward their goal. The actual preparing of the play was as much a melodrama as the play itself. Mr. Mahn, the director, helped to perfect the actors by developing them in all fields. Through voice warm-ups and vocal exercises the actors prepared their voices for the stage. Mr. Mahn coordinated the setting with what was available. Mrs. Saunders, one of North’s drama teachers, directed the play Voice of the Ghetto. Mrs. Saunders worked together with the cast to make thoir short play one to bo remembered. Citizens meet to discuss how their community system is coming along. Confronted by a young black man, the citizens are shockod and quite defensive. The young man’s god dauqhter was suspended from school for stealing and was brought to the meeting to be reinstated in their school. What her godfather was trying to tell them is that he would rather not have her go to school at all if she were to be going back to one of their schools. The system shows its prejudice throughout the play. Although the drama department has no facilities to aid in the production of plays, the improvising was an asset to any stage. Black playwright, Mr. Douqlas Turner Ward, wrote the play Day of Absence. The Negro Ensemble Company of New York first performed this ploy. North High's production receivod Third place in the Region and Ed Neal was rated the Best Actor in the district. In the play Black actors portray white roles. Complete chaos covers the town when all the Blacks disappear for one day. Stupidity and prejudice are outstanding in the play. One of the students thought that the play was quite an experience to see the roles of the different races switched and it made you stop to think. Curje you. Jack Dalfon. 9
