Our constant efforts were to be recognized and envied, praised and distinguished among our fellow students. It has been school which has made us intellectuals, strivers, and club members cooperating hand in hand. ALL THE THINGS WE ARE ALL THE 2 HINGS WE ARE ALL THE THINGS WE disciplining ourselves we sought our pecific goals. As we sought our spe-ific goals, we found many new in-riguing interests in school. School be-ame our meeting place and it gave us flings to look forward to, to be proud if. Some of us became athletic stars; [thers kings, queens, presidents, cap-ains, scholars, and all-around partici-ants. 3 We sought our own goals and North High became a key which unlocked vast opportunities and insights to our daily life. Through these golden doors we became a self-sufficient organism learning and having fun. Because we were able to freely speak to our teachers, administration, and fellow students, forgetting traditional boundary lines, our search for maturity, knowledge, and wisdom has been a continuous line throughout our lives. We broke the pattern by developing new friends and interests through school. It has been school which gave us sadness, joy, fulfillment, and has made us all the things we are. 4 XT i 7 If there is one person in this school who realizes all the things wo are. it is our principal, Mr. Roland DeLapp. North is not fust a building where time passes from year to year. It is not simply the humdrum of ringing bells that fills a student's head each day. North is a school with a proud tradition. It is a multi-racial school where students live and cooperate with one another, a school where activities never end and the spirit of students echoes through the halls. North is a school of many high caliber teachers who look at their position as a little more than a job. Mr. DeLapp believes North has tho potential to be a great school. a Mr. DeLapp Guides North High Assistant Principals Handle Student Problems Mr. Walter Rock, one of North' Assistant principals, says that he finds his work very invigorating. North is a school with unique students who show individuality, openness and honesty when dealing with fellow studonts and faculty. I this really our punijhment? Debaters on the 1968-69 squad have become very familiar with the above resolution set by the National Forensic League. Each year the NFL sots such a resolution for high school students to investigate and discuss for a better understanding of life and government. Researching every aspect of the armed forces and poverty, and the development of speaking ability helps debaters to mature into citizens aware of life around them. Debaters got a welcome boost when Mr. Mike Sieben accepted the position of debate coach. Mr. Sieben had been a debater for eight years before coming to North. Regretfully the squad lost Mr. Sieben when he was inducted for basic training in the reserves. Almost ironically the squad was debating draft issues at the time. 32 According to Mr . The bookstore, found in the basement during the morning and lunch hours, and the handy contribution can were the main money raising projects, Most of the proceeds were given to the American Field Service to bring an exchange student to North. Students who qualified in the areas of character, scholarship, leadership, and service were inducted into the Society. Spring inductions of 1969 were celebrated with a semi-formal banquet and the annual spring picnic. Other activities of the year included a sleigh rido and a faculty debate on the 1968 presidential elections. Officer wara Prau'dant. Barry Kalnar: Sacratary. Linda Edbarg: Traa -urar. Expecting a snap course, most of this year's staff came unprepared for their new job. After hours of hard work, learning copy styles, cropping pictures, typing and reading, those same people realized that putting an annual together isn't at all easy. No matter what activity a student attended, football. baskotball, club meetings, dances, the annual photographers were there getting a shot ot the true spirit of North High School. Three years at North go quickly and are filled with happy momories for all. To aid the student's memory, the POLARIS captured the fun and excitement which the student body enjoyed, and made it into a picture-book of 1968-69. 47 Tho Bi-Woolly staff is always busy iust boforo a deadline: Barry Kolnor. It was here, in this fertile volley where sharecroppers, men and women, black and white, worked to earn their livings. However, they were in danger of losing the land they worked on to greedy Senator Rowkins. As the Sheriff is about to auction off the land, Susie, owner of the property and the deaf mute sister of the sharecroppers’ leader, arrives. They rejoice when they learn that Woody is going to buy the land back. As in all fairy tales, the ending is happy. North out-pointed the Pioneers 35-6. The Polars also darkened Vocational homecoming 33-13. There were many reasons for North's low standing. Inexperience was a major handicap. Injury took its toll, too. A crippling loss for the squad was Frank Peterson. Big Frank was a starter on the '67-'68 squad, but was unable to play this season because of an injury. Mark Lahtinen and Steve Johnson were out temporarily with injuries. Coach Don Sovell had his handicaps, too. This was his first year as head coach. He tried many new techniques and tactics, always striving to develop the line. Coach Sovell was assisted by Larry Hartze and Roxie Pestello. They were both important assets to the team. Starring offensive men were Ed Johnson (fullback). Ralph Mason (left end). Ben Crushon (guard). Rich Morris (guard). Victor Everson (center), and Kevin Lepisto (quartorback). Dofonsive stars were Mark Lahtinon (linebacker), Steve Johnson (linebacker), and Steve Dahman (tackle). Two junior’, on the squad who oxcelled in defense were Andy Fisher (linebacker), and Roubon Contreras (halfback). Steve Dahman was named to the All-City team. The Head was also named most valuable player by his teammates. Larry Brown, veteran team member, spirited the North gridders. Skiers Slip Into Third The 1969 ski teem provided some very big disappointments and. at the same time, pleasant surprises. This year the skiers, took a third in districts. They had a chance to prove themselves a week after districts in a make-up meet against city champions Roosevelt. Roosevelt had the slalom under their belt although North's Quinn Bergman tied for first in city. Jumping was North's bag for sure. It was up to cross country. The race started and finished and all the Polars felt great after the first report which said North had won. Former Coach Kindem. who was very close to the team this year, found a heart-breaking mistake in the timing and a much enjoyed victory was turned into defeat. The chance to prove the Polars ability came again. This time it was the State Meet. It became a disaster, partially because of bad luck and mostly because of mistakes. Captains for this year's team were Jim Thielen. consistently the city's number one jumper, and Mark Lahtinen. a top cross country skier in the city. Sophomore Bill Jacobson proved to be one of the best, and potentially the best future prospect. Duane Swenson. Quinn Bergman and Larry Streleck are next year's Big Boys in the three events: cross-country, slalom, and jumping. 88 Jean Claude, watch out! Hey, Jim, don't forget to jump at the end. Cheerleaders cheer for victory! At every game they led the Polar fans and teams to sore throats and success. Cheerleaders play an important part in the spirit of any school. North is no exception. This year's squad generated school spirit which is very important in student life. The girls were chosen to participate on the squad in the spring of 1968. They were judged on personality, appear-ance. spirit, scholastic standing, and athletic ability. Judges were the seniors of the 1967-68 cheerleading squad and teachers. Patti Kuntz led the squad this year. Hor excellent leadership ability aided her in developing the team to its potential capabilities. She was instrumental in acquiring new uniforms for her squad. Seniors on the squad are Marcy Gohmert. Shauntel Man-derville, Beth Scheunemann. These girls are not only cheerleaders but also participate in various other school activities. Juniors on the squad are Barb Beauchamp. Monica Cul-hane. LeeAnn Melland. Ruth Spellman. By choosing leadership class, senior girls kept active in leading exercises and aiding students who neoded help with the various sports equipment. A leader should be able to got along with other students. She must be well suited to cope with any problems that arrive. Many leaders plan to continue and become future gym toachers. Gymnasts practiced every Monday and Wednesday starting in the fall of the year. Some of the girls had more practice when they went to Gymnastics camp, a one week stay at Gustavus Adolphus College. There thoy worked on the uneven parallels, balance beam, vault, dance technique, and floor exercise. After practices, the most competent girls were selected to compete with other schools on the various equipment. Helping the girls on their tough spots were Mrs. Keating and Mrs. Gottman, sophomore and junior gym teachers. Using fast footwork, keeping a good eye on the birdie, and swinging hard at practice, the girls competed for their places on the badminton team. Competing for the team were four singles and threo doubles. The team captain. Jo Ann Wessen. had been on the team in her sophomore and junior years which kept her in shape to earn her position of first place. The Golf team, practicing at Theodore Wirth Park and Columbia Golf course, practiced to play other Northside golf teams.
