Hl-Y Hi-Y, which is affiliated with the Y.M.C.A., is a world organization with a history and tradition of over half a century of growth and expansion in service and fellowship. Their purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character. North's Hi-Y club is divided into smaller clubs organized at the beginning of the school year. They met every Tuesday night; one of the members serves as host in offering his home as the meeting place. A leader attends all their meetings and functions. The activities Hi-Y has planned this year include collecting Goodwill clothing bags, a joint Hi-Y—Y-Teens collection for the United Fund, and a money raising project as a contribution for the World Fellowship fund of the Y.M.C.A. In February, Hi-Y held its annual Sno-Day at a Y camp near the city. On Lincoln's birthday, they sent representatives to the all-city Hi-Y—Y-Teens conference held downtown. Injuries held the Polars back with three boys receiving broken legs. With Ken Casperson as the only returning regular, Coach Snell hod a big rebuilding job to do. Bill Weise, John Williams, Don Lacher, Bill Waddick, Wright and Casperson were the bulwarks of the strong Polar line. Casperson was also voted the most valuable player on the team by his teammates. The starting ends were Dan Favreau and Ron Carlson. Starting at quarterback for most of the year was Dean Quam, a fine passer who threw three touchdown passes during the season. Mel Douglas, at halfback, thrilled the fans many times with his long runs, a couple of those good for 63 and 68 yards. Other top backfield men were John Jacobs, Jim Oren, and Vern Munson. Assistant Coach Vance Kinkle receive aid from Lowell Isenberg and Melvin Schanfield. Carl Kroening 110 POLAR ELEVEN Jim Oren makes diving tackle. North opened its season against Roosevelt with one of its best games by losing ten to two. Three safeties highlighted this game and except for one defensive lapse the Polars might have taken it. In their second contest, the North Eleven bowed to an unusually strong Vocational team, 12 to 6, with the winning touchdown being scored with less than one minute remaining. In losing 47-12, to city champion Washburn, the Polars achieved the distinction of scoring more points against the Washburn defense than any other school during the season. Having a bye. North traveled to Albert Lea and lost 26-6 in freezing temperatures. The football team played their best game for Homecoming against Southwest and lost a heartbrealcer . . . 14-7. Spurred on by the slogan 'Drive the Tribe to Suicide, the Polar eleven fought valiantly for Queen Carole Ervasti and her court but finally succumbed to the superior strength of their opponents. Although we had the first winless season in a long time at North, the Polar football team showed tremendous spirit and heart and gave loyal Polar fans a lot of good, hard football. Loaded with veterans, North's baseball team, coached by Joe Hutton, took the Northern division crown for the second straight year winning all eight division games and the first game of the city playoffs. Then the Polars bogged down and lost the next two games and the city championship to a strong Washburn team. Barring an injury to Joe Pollack, a three-year veteran and ace pitcher, the Polars could conceivably have taken state championship. Joe Pollack, Marshall Schwartz, Mike Rostamo, Paul Schupmann, and Dean Quam were the pitchers. Pollack pitched the first four games before injuring an arm muscle on the way to a no-hitter against Edison. Schwartz and Rostamo pitched the remaining seven games with Schwartz hurling a no-hitter in the first game of the city playoffs. Schupmann and Quam pitched well in relief and non-conference tilts and gained valuable experience for the 1962 squad. 114 Miko Rostamo starting his slido. Dannie Rokstad guards home plote. Coach Joe Hutton Mike Rostamo slams out a hit. Dennie Rekstad and Brian McKinley handled the catching chores. Rekstad, only a sophomore, was one of the leading hitters on the team and also a fine receiver. For most of the season Paul Goldstein, Joe Lachner, Dave Gomez, and John Fabienke made up the starting infield, the fifth man being Dave Kuehn. Gomez to Lachner to Goldstein was a familiar double-play combination. Terry Nagle. Jim Lenhardt, John Tolentino, John Starks, and Dan Favreau comprised the Polar outfield. These boys got the job done both offensively and defensively. With only four returning lettermen, Schupmann, Kuehn. Starks, and Favreau, Coach Joe Hutton will have a big rebuilding job this spring to keep up the tradition of winning baseball teams at North. This second division finish was due partially to the loss of several of last year’s starters who went to Brooklyn Center. Most of the season consisted of city dual meet competition. Standouts in these meets were Harms, Roppe, Wright, Isaacson, Pettman, and Casperson. Bob Wright rides his opponont. WRESTLERS FIGHT THEIR WAY TO VICTORIES 118 Steve Kairies rolls opponent. It was led by All-City forward Myron Stolp and second team All-City guard Louie Lindstrom. These boys, along with Bruce Gates, Jerry Kline, and Bob Kramer, were the nucleus of the Polar five. Relieving whenever necessary were Vance Kinkle, Leo Johnson, and Mike King. Their record was good enough for a second-place tie with Edison. The cagers lost only to Central, South, and Southwest. They advanced to the semi-finals of District 17 play where they lost a close one to Southwest. Myron Stolp scored 202 points in 10 games to place second in the city scoring race. He was noted throughout the league as a fierce competitor and tough defensive man. Louie Lindstrom, co-captain along with Stolp, was one of the best outside shots in the conference. He also finished in the top ten scorers of the city. Bob Kramer, a 6'5 center and only a sophomore, played good ball, especially in the districts, and shows promise of a great future at North. 120 Myron Stolp puts in two more. Before each of these games their opponent was the conference leader but North put West out of contention by a score of 2-1, and Marshall never recovered from its 4-3 lose. North's season record, however, was not an indication of its potential, the pucksters seemed to play in spurts. In non-conference games the Polars outhustled many fine teams, finishing with an 8-4 record. Captain Tom Roden was North's ace scorer and one of the conference stars. Bob Bertrand and Co-captain Bruce Henderson completed the first line, with John Connoy and Bill Warner on defense and goalie Dave Olson in the nets. In order to increase the efficiency and co-ordination of the committees, the student chairmen were united in the homeroom of Mr. Kleven, senior class adviser. This group, formally called the Senior Council led the way in making decisions relative to the spending of class funds and time Seniors were invited to sign up for committees of their choice, which soon fell to work on their respective tasks. Only the election committee started in our junior year, leaving the majority of the work for this year. Everything from dances to commencement were brought off with great success, due also to the aid given by the senior homeroom advisers, each assigned to one committee.
