It is our year, nothing can change it. Turn it upside down—turn it sideways—and it’s still our year—1961. This school year is gone, the events arc past, and the deeds are done, but the knowledge and memories we have gained this year will remain with us for the rest of our lives. Commencement is a fitting climax to the many activities of this past year, but it is not the end. From here, each of us will be going his own way, following his own pathway through life. Thus, commencement marks not the end. but rather a new beginning . . . The Beginning 9 Mr. Johnson Greets, Guides Students and Faculty Mr. Johnson greets the incoming sophomores. Members of the Student Council worked on one or more of the five Homecoming committees: program, decoration, dance, souvenir selling, and queen selection. After being nominated for candidacy by the senior class, five charming finalists were voted on by the entire student body. Returning alumni marked the official opening of Homecoming events. A Spookcrama theme was developed by the acts presented by students and alumni. At the end of the program the cheerleaders spurred the students to enthusiasm for the coming game with arch-rival Henry. The boys played their hardest, but . . . 33-0 was the final score, with Henry being the victor. The dance the next night showed that the spirit of Homecoming had not been dented by the results of the game. The lunch room was packed with couples dancing to the music of Rod Aabcrg and his band. Upstairs in the girls' gym, other couples found it fun to step to Mr. Brown s rollicking square dance calls. Aaticipitioo 28 Secret letter bears royal queen's name. Tension mounted as co-captains Ron Patten and George MeMurry drew the name of the Homecoming queen out of the envelope. Emotions rose to a frenzied pitch as they finally selected Andrea Hricko as the 196(1 Homecoming queen. Moment of decision 29 Starry-eyed Andrea receives her robe. As a queen finalist she was busy and full of suspense until the moment she was chosen. As queen, she reigned over the mysterious happenings of the Spookcrama auditorium. During the half-time show, she was the highlight of the grand procession. Her duties and responsibilities os queen continued Saturday evening when she was hostess at the Homecoming dance. Her duties continued throughout the year for she was always expected to represent an ideal North High student. The band bows to North Royalty. Yearbook Staff Leaves 61 POLARIS To North High We, the Polaris Annual Staff of 1961, being of sound mind, leave this yearbook to the classes of 1961, 1962, and 1963. All that has happened at North during this year— the wonderful, exciting, and even sad—is recorded herein. Homecoming, the games we have won and lost, awards, activities, and graduation are all within these pages. This book represents much time and tears, but it has been well worth our effort. We stipulate only one condition with your receiving of this book . . . that is, to enjoy and treasure it as a history of 1960-1961 at North High. 66 Merrill Goldberg, editor. Holly Day, Shirley Fox ■■■ 98 Sports Football Team Shows Spirit Coach Lee Snell Coach Harr)- Brown Coach Carl Krocning The Polar football squad thrilled and chilled a spirited student body as they compiled a record of 2 wins and 6 losses for the season. Long passes by Dave Gomez, slashing drives by Ron Patten, breakaway runs by Gary Clark, and spirited defensive plays by the hard-charging North line excited the many loyal Polar fans. The team showed a lot of improvement during the season. Coach Snell felt that this was both the hardest working and the most spirited group he has coached at North. The squad reached its peak in the final game against a tremendous Roosevelt eleven. Offensively and defensively the first half was the best football North played during the year. Halftime found the team trailing l}-7. The decisiveness of the second-half was a combination of two factors: Roosevelt's depth wearing down the North eleven, and a disputed call at a critical moment in the third quarter. Coach Snell felt that the only thing the team lacked to be a good ball club was speed, both in the line and in the backfield. He hailed Ron Patten and George McMurry as the finest captains he has associated with in more than twenty years of coaching. Several linemen stood out in their efforts this season. One of the hardest-rushing linemen in the city was Murray Cooper. Murray was selected on the second team All-Gty at defensive end. Offensive end Jim Naucr proved to be a very capable pass receiver. The outstanding lineman was Ken Caspcrson. who excelled as an offensive guard and a defensive linebacker. Dick Knight was the top defensive tackle, Tom Lonsky was an excellent linebacker, and Doug Stay was also a top lineman for the Polars. The backfield received most of the spotlight during the season. Fullback and Most Valuable Player Ron Patten was seldom missing from the lineup. Offensively, Ron shone as a strong runner and a devastating blocker; defensively, Ron was the bulwark of the North secondary. Halfback Gary Clark was the fastest man on the squad. Halfback Don Lundstrom gave the Polars added power in the backfield. Quarterback Dave Gomez was always feared as a passing threat. These four seniors were the team’s offensive standouts all year. Co-Captains Ron Patten and George McMurry arc pictured below. Gao1 Clark downs opponent. Polar tackier converge on ballcarrier. The North eleven played its first game of the season against South. The Polars displayed a staunch defense and a good running game though they used only 18 players. South scored first by recovering a North fumble and later penetrated North's pass defense. The final score favored South, 20-0. The second Polar game was played at Edison. The Tommies scored first, but North came back to tally 15 points. The Polars scored both touchdowns on passes from Gomez to Naucr. North won 15-6. Henry spoiled North's Homecoming with a terrific display of high school football. Two weeks later St. Paul Humboldt visited Hobb's Field for a non conference game. This was a defensive battle won by Humboldt 6-0. The final North victor)’ of the season came against Vocational. Good rushing by the Polar line curtailed Voc's passing attack to help North win 13-0. The barefoot harriers under the able coaching of Lewis Burnett stunned seven teams in succession before meeting the defending city champion, Roosevelt. This promised to be the most thrilling race of the year. The North thinclads ran their hearts out to nip the two Roosevelt runners at the tape and win by one point. Leading the team were five seniors and a very promising |unior. Running number one throughout the season was one of the state's outstanding runners. co-captain Tom McCaffrey. Tom received medals for placing sixth in the state-wide Swain Invitational and third in the city meet. Dick Toft made the greatest improvement and received a ribbon for his efforts in the city meet. The Polar nine, coached by James Keenan, compiled a record of 7 wins and 1 loss to capture the Northern division title. Then they proceeded to the city championship play-off against Washburn. Pollack contained the vaunted Washburn slugging attack as North won the first game 3-2. Washburn proved to be too powerful by winning the remaining two games and finally becoming state champions. On the pitching staff were Joe Pollack. Manny Kopstcin, Marshall Schwartz, and Mike Rostamo. Pollack allowed only twelve runs in winning six of the seven games he pitched during regular season play. Joe showed his versatility by leading the team in slugging percentage too. Kopstein hurled a shutout in his only regular season game and was called upon to pitch in the decisive third game of the playoffs. The season was highlighted by a battle for city scoring honors between Jim Ginsburg and Henry's Mel Northway. Although Northway outscorcd Ginsburg in their much publicized encounter, Jim won the scoring championship and broke the existing city record by scoring 288 points. The sejuad opened the season against city champion Roosevelt who had five seniors in the starting lineup. A fourth quarter Roosevelt surge quelled Polar hopes for an upset. It wasn’t until the fourth game of the season that the team gained its first victory. Four juniors and a senior played most of this game to beat West. For the remainder of the season three seniors and two juniors led the team to four victories in six games. Five ironmen played regularly during the season. Seniors Joe Lachner and John Fabienke were usually on the starting team along with Jim Ginsburg. The most promising newcomer was Myron Stolp, who shone offensively and defensively. The other top junior was guard Louis Lindstrom. Jim Giiubur { A great captain Senior Jim Ginsburg dosed out a brilliant three years of basketball at North High. This was the third consecutive year Jim has played regular center and has been the team's leading pointmakcr. As a sophomore, the 6' 7 center averaged 13 points a game thru 18 games, upped his average to 15 points as a junior and this year set the all-time scoring record for Minneapolis with a remarkable 288 points. Jim was given honorable mention on the all-city selection as a junior and also the all-city district team. He closed out his senior years as the leading scorer, a unanimous all-city choice, and was selected to the all-district team. In the words of Coach Hutton, North congratulates you, thanks you, and wishes you the best in your college career. The basketball team opened the season against city champion Roosevelt with five seniors in the lineup. Paced by Ginsburg's 37 points, the Polars battled the Teddies for three cjuarters before Roosevelt surged into a decisive lead. The next two games found Coach Hutton trying several lineup changes in an attempt to find a winning combination. The Polars were beaten by Edison and Southwest in these games. At this point in the season North began to appear more impressive. The)’ beat West and Central and proceeded to win five of their last seven games. The final games of the season were probably the most exciting. The Polars lost to Henry by two points in a see saw battle for the Northsidc Championship. Then North overcame a ten point deficit to defeat Marshall in overtime. Ginsburg scored all of North's points in the overtime session to enable him to win the scoring title for the city. They hustled during practice sessions and aroused student interest with the hustle they displayed during games. Ouch Brown, with his boundless energy', didn't detract at all from this hustling spirit. North’s pucksters began the season by winning one of four games. Then they proceeded to accomplish the unusual feat of tying four consecutive games. Two of these tics came against Washburn and West, both powers in the league. The Polar completed the season with victories over Marshall and Vocational. Captains Bud Schaitburger and Doug Stay provided excellent leadership for the team. Coach Burnett's incomparable gymnasts flailed eight opponents in dual meets, trounced opposition in the Northwest Open, and decisively battered any team which was left by winning the district, the region, and the state titles. Two important meets during the season were the Northwest Open and the district tournament. The Polar sejuad won both classes of competition in the Northwest Open against many of the best teams in the state, but they didn't reach their peak until the district meet, which determines the city champion. In this meet. North's gymnastic team swept all three classes to earn their tenth consecutive city championship. Amazing as it may seem, none of the Polar gymnasts has ever been in a losing meet. The D” class, consisting of inexperienced athletes, provided the balance which was necessary to bolster the many returning veterans. In the C class were several gymnasts who were returning as state champs. Most of their competition came from their own teammates. The council is directed by Mr. Chester Johnson and Mr. John Jacobi, athletic director. Its duties consist of many of the behind-the-scenes jobs which contribute to a successful athletic program. One of the council's chores is to award letters to deserving athletes. Equipment Managers Suit Athletes The equipment managers play an important role in North's athletic program. Mr. Hansen and his capable assistants issue the equipment for every sport. They busy themselves with sorting, repairing, and distributing gear. Though seldom appreciated fully, the equipment managers make a significant contribution to North's athletic program. During the basketball preview held on December 2. I960, Mr. Jacobi was honored for the thirty-five years of valuable service he has contributed to high school athletics. For many years he coached basketball at North. Now as athletic director, he works with the council in handling any problems which arise during the athletic season. 129 EQUIPMENT MANAGERS. Leslie Johnson. Dave Gorham, Harley Finnvick, L. C. The Diary of Anne Frank, given on March 9th and 10th, is the story of Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who, with her parents, older sisters, and four others, hid from the Gestapo in the Secret Annex in the back of an Amsterdam office building. Anne’s diary reveals the effort of a young girl to understand herself, her adoration for her father, her despair for her mother, and her growing love for Peter Van Daan. CAST Director Floyd H. On the following pages arc representatives of this great class. These students arc elected by the seniors to fill the categories in the Hall of Fame. Here's to those who will succeed, the ideal Polar-ites, the most talented, the friendliest, the athletes, the dancers and the cutest couple. Let's not forget the best figure and physique, the wittiest, the best dressed, the most desirable dates, the shyest, the brightest smiles and the biggest flirts.
