Minneapolis Public Schools NORTH HICH SCHOOL 1719 Fremont Avenue North. Minneapolis 11, Minnesota Chester M. Johnson, Principal Mehvik C. Dillneh. Assistant Principal To the Graduates of 1957 North High School You, as one of today s graduates, should be immeasurably better fitted to cope with life than your grandparents. You are better informed, more interested in finding out about the world in which you live, and you have been happier in your school experience than many previous generations. Schools are operated for the public good, but today's public good includes also your opportunity to make a living and contribute a skill to society. Education has progressed from the desire to insure literacy to an occupational concern for your social and economic future. You will be in stiffer competition as there are more trained persons today and there are higher demands for training in many new fields. Each of you should aim to continue to train yourself either by further schooling or on the Job. The reward from manual skills now matches that of the professions and business. Mass education has raised the standards of life in America, but it cannot guarantee success either at the high school or the college level. The old rules for success have not been changed. Schooling at any level provides no more than an outline of knowledge and assists in developing habits of orderly thought. These and the basic fundamentals should equip you to face the world unafraid. There is one other essential. It is the willingness to learn and to work. High School graduation should not be the end of your education. The successful person will learn something most every day of his life. Each experience is an addition to one's total wisdom. Education will give you a better opportunity to try for success. It will place a person a little way on the road to usefulness. Nothing worth while is likely to be attained easily. Hard work is as necessary today as ever before. Work demands physical and mental energy with a measure of earnestness and devotion. Character is built on honesty, service, faith and clean living. We are proud of the graduates from North High. As you continue in your plans, our wish is that you will share a good measure of success and happiness. We hope to continue to give you any needed support and personal endorsement in the years ahead. Sincerely, CMJ M
