MAASS Years of devoted service, capable leadership, never-ending interest in our activities . . . these are only a few of the fine qualities that distinguish Mr. Harry H. Maass as the greatest principal North High School has ever had. He has unselfishly spent his time for the good of our school. It is for these reasons, now upon his retirement, that we dedicate the 1956 Polaris to Mr. Harry H. Maass. One of the most significant events at North for Mr. Maass and the students was the dedication of the flagpole in memory of North's war dead. It was dedicated on October 14. NORTH'S MOST AROENT athletic fan, Mr. Maass. appears deeply concerned as the North High basketball team fights for the lead. Mr. Maass and Mr. Anway seem to be very concerned over a counseling problem involving a student at North High. HIS WAS THE BIG DAY One day last spring the gang on the yearbook staff had to select the theme. Editor Patti called roll and all were present — except for John Harris. “John, where are you?” “Here I am. I was sleeping!” said Jo, from the back room. “O.K. Now that everyone is here — You will pick a theme. So we discussed our ideas. Bill and Liz wanted a Polar Bear Theme. Murph insisted that Lil’ Abner characters running thru the book, would be best, but Jo disagreed. Judie, Merle, and Arlene liked a musical idea. And Pat and Karen actually wanted frogs jumping thru the book to suggest leap year. So we kicked these ideas around. We couldn’t decide and then summer came and we said, “Good Page 7 Bye ’til Fall.” Finally we were back! Of course, we went right to work! Judy voiced our choice immediately so we set to work again. Eleanor still wanted the Lil’ Abner idea, but Barb talked her out of that. We had to get this done! We decided to stay after school and think about it some more. So Hatti brought a radio — to help us concentrate; and we thought. . . All at once Jan yelled. m ill •s Listen Listen to that song. Page 8 Diane and Barb sighed, “it’s beautiful!’’ and Ardith yelled, “It’s perfect!” We all listened and out of the radio came a song. It was perfect. We all finally agreed. We had a THEME. We used the theme and worked hard for many long months. What came out of our labor was this annual. So we the Polaris Staff wish you lots of enjoyment and hope that this annual will completely preserve all of your . . . Page 9 Minneapolis Public Schools NORTH HICH SCHOOL 1719 Fremont Avenue North. Minneapolis 11, Minnesota IIamt H. Maass, Principal Mkmvlh C. Diu-vxn. Assistant Principal Februa ry 9, 1956 Senior Claes of 1956 North High School Minneapolis, Minnesota Seniors: It is not news to you that you are living in a scientific age that has conquered various areas of our environment and has, through these changes, revolutionized certain phases of our lives. To substantiate this fact we need mention only one area. We have made stupendous strides in overcoming space and time. From the old ox-cart days we have advanced to railroads, automobiles, airplanes, telephone, telegraph, radio and television. We have within your space of time tapped a new source of power that lies within the tiny atom. This discovery bids to overshadow almost all else accomplished by man. America, leading the world in these accomplishments, has made the benefits derived from these achievements available to more people than any other country in the world. There are two questions we would like to ask. How did this all come about? What is resoonsible for this unprecedented progress in which we now find ourselves involved? Does not the answer lie in the fact that here in America we have made more use of our human energy and have set the machinery in motion that will use human energy to the best of our knowledge? Human energy, a force we all possess, takes its direction from the human mind. Whether your energy is used to the advantage of the human race or toward the retardation of human progress depends upon you. Human energy has been the greatest factor in the progress mentioned above; and if we have not succeeded as well in some areas as in others, it is because some human energy was deferred into wrong channels. As undergraduates of North High School, what direction have you given to the human energy you possess? As graduates of North High School may you always be a helping force in the future advancement of the progress of man. My very best wishes to all of you. May you enjoy your future by the proper use of your God given energies. Sincerely, Harry H. Maass Principal MR. MERVIN DtllNW, Assistant Principal The close scheduling of Mr. Diliner's ob of assistant principal keeps him busier than most students realize. Among his many duties are those of organizing classes and planning classroom schedules for teachers. Bulletins explaining the function of North High are issued by him, in 'which various courses are explained to students. He also coordinates PTBA activities and centralizes the auditorium programs. Seeing to it the rules and regulations are obeyed, students Wno breaV. a school rule are referred to him by teachers. Page 14 MISS JOHANSON it shown helping sophomore Stephanie Greenberg fill out her program. AMONG Miss Marti's many duties is keeping an accurate record of each student's program. Co-ordinator of the new Sophomore Enrichment Program this year is Astrid Johanson. She organizes work in developmental reading for the teachers who conduct the SEP study halls. Miss Johanson, who formerly was a psychology and gym teacher, serves also as a counselor for tenth grade girls and boys. The Girls' Counselor at North is Viola Marti. Girls in need of counseling on high school education or vocational planning find friendly advice from Miss Marti. An array of books and pamphlets on colleges and careers can be found in her office. Miss Marti works with Mr. Anway on the testing programs and acts also as a counselor for group activities. Page 15 Mr. Anway, the Boyi' Counselor looks over information on vocations for boys. He interviews many boys looking for part-time jobs. Boys looking for information on vocational opportunities or educational counseling find just the help they need from Lellwyn Anway, Boys' Counselor. Mr. Anway also works with the student testing programs. Mrs. Mary Ellen Zens, our understanding visiting teacher listens sympathetically to students with problems within the home. By visiting the home, she aids in whatever way she can in correcting the difficulties for both the student and his parents. Probably the most visited person at North is the nurse, Helen Dargay. She re-admits students who have been absent and excuses students who feel ill. The eye and ear tests, and X-rays are given under her supervision. Doing an excellent job in the library are Helen Ulvestad and Melitta Tonn. They help students find everything from books for pleasure reading to pamphlets and magazines for research work. Page 16 HELEN ULVESTAD and Melitta Tonn help Geraldine Wood find information for her United States history class. MRS. BAND The State Championship North High School Band marched on to new heights in 1956. They provided a spirited atmosphere at pep-fests throughout the year. The Band, led by its talented director, Ernest A. Villas, displayed its precision in marching performances at Hobbs Field and the Minneapolis Auditorium. North's musicians donned coveralls and busily worked on scenery and decorations for the annual Holiday Revue and Sno-Ball. This affair, sponsored by the Band members and their parents, was planned with a South Pacific theme in 1956. In the spring, the Band presented its annual Spring Concert and ended the '55-'56 season on the football field at graduation playing Pomp and Circumstance. The Band is taking its turn at playing at the auditorium. Loyalty always sounds good but it never sounds as good as it does when our own Band is playing. HERE IS OUR championship band honoring North during half time at one of our football games. MR. VILLAS, our capable band leader, has some leisure time and is twiddling his thumbs. It was their job to produce a yearbook twice as big as the previous year. Hard work was a must and staff members stayed after school many, many times during the year. They lined up pictures, wrote copy and cutlines, and transferred preliminary layouts to final triplicates. PATTI LAULAINEN, Editor-in-Chief of the As each section was sent to be processed, the 1956 Polaris Annual. editors breathed sighs of relief. On March 15, when the final deadline was met, the Polaris staff said a silent prayer and anxiously awaited the day when the books would return to North. IT IS a rare occasion when we can get all of THE GANG together even to have their picture taken. This time we got them all together except Ardith Born who was absent. OH PLEASE, Nero, won't you take some pictures for me, begs Judy Ollanketo, Picture Co-ordinator. It seems Nero (alias Bill Wellisch) is too busy fiddling around to take pictures. Page 87 GIRLS, GIRLS, don't fightl There are plenty of juniors and sophomores for both of you. Judy Lebedoff and Melanie Finkelstein, Underclass Editors, know this all too well. BUSILY POLISHING apples are the Faculty Editors, Janice Anderson and Ardith Born. TYPE, TYPE, type. This typewriter is driving me mad, says Diane Schneider who is Business Manager for the Annual Staff. YOU WILL meet your first deadline—and your second and third deadlines also, declares Mr. Anderson, faculty advisor for the Polaris Annual. O-O-O-O WHAT LEGSI These girls, who seem to be so busy, are Barb Compton, Karen Carlson, Liz Anderson, Judy Lebedoff, Patti Laulainen, and Hattie Shelton. WHO'S PAINTING WHAT? It seems that Judy Kleyman is going to paint something even if it is our other artist, Arlene Graf. ATTENTION EVERYBODY! Wonder how many times Murph Finkelstein said this the day the group pictures were taken by Mr. Banks. John Harris is working awfully hard. WHAT DO you mean, we aren't going to graduate? ask Liz Anderson, Hattie Shelton, and Barb Compton. After all our hard studying and hard work on the senior section we had better graduate! BARBARA DAVIDSON, Eleanor Haugen, and Pat Hurst, our activities editors, seem to be trying to add this one to their list of activities. LEE COHEN and Marcia Bahe, junior photographers, are busily examining this piece of equipment. The experience of helping take pictures this year will make for better pictures in next year's annual. Page 90 HEY THERE, Patti Laulainen, don't lean too far. We want to know who is leading the race but we don't want to lose you. GOING WADING, Bill Wellisch? At least the co-editors of the news staff, Elliot Cohen and Marcia Schwartz think so. Jeanette Neadlc is howling too, but what about Cyrile Kaplan, Janice Lebow, Carol Jackson, and Joan Crowley. They must have heard the joke before. For 31 years the Polaris has been an essential part of North. In 1956, as usual, the news staff covered all areas of school life. The staff this year followed an extremely difficult schedule as junior sized editions alternated with the customary bi-weekly papers. As ever, the able staff, spurred on by the guidance of James ( You will make that dead-line ) Anderson, consistently went to press on time. In their leisure time the paper gang worked on plans for the yearly Journalism Jump which was held in February. Outstanding issues of the paper were those concerning Homecoming, Christmas, and Graduation. CAN THIS laughing foursome be those serious-minded individuals who write our editorials? You just can't tell about some people, namely Lois Segal, Phil Pickman, Dave Lebedoff, and Barb Johnson. Requirements of character, scholarship, leadership, and service were well met by fifty members this year. This large group, busily engaged in many activities, was made possible by the National's ruling that up to ten per cent of the junior class might be elected to membership. For this year, one of the main projects of this diligent and hard-working group was helping in the SEP study halls. Other projects included support of the Lost and Found, maintenance of a scholastic rating board, and the sending of letters of commendation to Honor Roll students. The induction of new members in March was a major occasion, followed by a lovely banquet held in the students' lunchroom. Badly needed new robes of imperial blue were loaned to the Honor Society without fee or transportation charges from the same company that handles commencement gowns. Subscriptions to Student Life magazine were also obtained. Hilda Blessin and Mrs. Daisy Hetherington are the able advisors of this organization. BEN RACKNER PTSA President The aim of the PTSA is to promote a better understanding between the parents, teachers, and students of North High. In the fall parental membership is solicited through the homerooms. Student enthusiasm is sparked by a trophy which is awarded to those homerooms which achieve 100 percent membership. The students' part of the organization is less active than that of the parents. The students, however, readily offer their services as ushers for the evening open-houses. EACH MEMBER is working on different projects and after some experimenting they will compare their discoveries. Page 147 Mfr BOB OLSEN CHUCK DAGGETT TOM CHANDONNET Although not achieving their predicted three win-four loss goal, Rube Johnson's eleven showed fine spirit throughout the season. Had not injuries plagued the Polars, the record may have been considerably better than it was. In the opening game of the season North came up against Edison, whose only touchdown came in the first quarter when all-city Bob Montgomery smashed through the Polar defense terminating a 54-yard touchdown drive. North threatened once just before the half when an Edison fumble was recovered on the Tommy 12 yard line. However, the threat was stopped two plays later when a fumble nullified the Polar chances The outcome of the game saw the Tommies victorious, 6-0. On the twenty-third of September, Roosevelt invaded Hobbs' Field and led by their elusive halfback, L. C. Hester, had little trouble subduing the Polars, 34-7. WITH JERRY SOLTIS leading interference. Wally Ulmaniec race to pay dirt after matching a pats in tho fourth quarter of the Henry game. PAUL CASPERSON BEN NIEMI TOM HEDIN North's only tally came in the fourth quarter when quarterback Clay Rethwill carried the ball over for the Polars, and Nahinsky added the extra point. The next week North again played host this time to future city and twin city champs Patrick Henry. Henry play completely dominated the field as they scored 35 points to the Polars seven. Again North's only touchdown came in the fourth quarter when halfback Wally Ulmaniec hauled in a Chandonnet pass on the Henry 25-yard line and went all the way for the Polars. On October 7 the Polars traveled to Washburn seeking their first victory. Their hopes were shattered, however, as the Millers scored four times. North's lone touchdown was scored by Jim Quirk. Bob Olsen led the Polar offensive play with his fine running and all around play. The final score: Washburn 29, North 7. RON TANCHIN JERRY BEAUCHANE JOHN BRAASCH DON HARDING Page 151 COACH RUBE JOHNSON ASSISTANT COACH ELMER EDLUND The fourteenth of October saw the Polars playing host to Southwest. The game was a hard fought one with few scoring opportunities for North. However their defensive play was the best of the season thus far, and the fine running of Olsen helped the Polars to their lone first quarter touchdown. Southwest collected three tallies to subdue the Polars 20-6. The next team which victimized the Polars was a well-rounded Marshall eleven. In this contest the Polars played their best game scoring two touchdowns and almost catching the Cardinals in the fourth quarter. However, this was not enough as the Cards came out on top to the tune of 21-14. The most prominent aspect of the Central game was the long, hard running gains of fullback Bob Olsen, who came through with a good exhibition of open field running. Page 152 FULLBACK Bob Olsen seems headed for a sizable gain as he rounds end pursued by several Central defenders. POLAR END, Don Harding, fights off a Roosevelt defender for a short pass. Throughout three quarters the game was deadlocked without a score. Then, midway through the fourth period the Pioneers sparked a 47-yard touchdown drive to score the lone touchdown of the game, thus bringing the 1955 season to a close, squeezing out a close 7-0 triumph over the Polars. During the whole season the never-say-die spirit was evident throughout the team down to the last man. This was thoroughly evidenced by the hard running of all of the Polar backs including quarterback Tom Clandonnet, who very ably directed the team and called signals, Wally Ul-maniec, the team sparkplug who always came up with a good run when it was needed. Jim Quirk was the target of numerous Chan-donnet passes and one of the outstanding defensive players on the team, and last but not least by any means, Bob Olsen, Polar fullback who displayed magnificent running ability throughout the season and was voted the most valuable player by his teammates. You cannot, however, praise only the backfield as the Polar line had its standouts too. Namely John Braasch, Ben Niemi, Paul Casperson, and Tom Hedin as well as Don Harding and Chuck Daggett. WHAT'S WRONG, BOYS? The Polar bench seems worried as Rube Johnson gives las minute instructions to Jerry Beauchane before sending him in. SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL The main purpose of the sophomore football coach is to build material for the following year's A squad. This year Curtis Gwynne seems to have done quite well, producing several good backs and linemen. Although the record (4-1) didn't show this, the junior Polars displayed a fast team which should help the 1956 and '57 A squads to respectable records. CROSS COUNTRY This year the Polar thinclads ran their way to a very successful season led by Seniors John McCaffery and Dick Supolo, Junior Mykola Moroz and Sophomore Doug Sacre. This year the Burnett-coached team finished the'season with a record of eight wins and no losses in City competition and a fifth place berth in the City Meet. In the State Meet John McCaffery was the only North runner to finish close to the top with a seventh place. Page 156 THIS ACTION is typical of 11 the games the sophomores played this season. SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL Sporting an eight win, two loss record this year, John Conover coached his most successful season of sophomore ball since he took over the coaching post. This year's cubs showed a well-balanced team as far as scoring went as well as having extremely good depth on the bench. Gary Schutte, Ralph Hall and Eddie Nelson were the team's leading scorers. BASKETBALL RAY LACHER All-City Second Team TOM CHANDONNET All-City First Team CAL DARTH DON PERTINEN LARRY MATTSON Page 158 DICK ALFORD Coach John Jacobi sprung one of the big surprises of the 1956 basketball season when, with a team which was rated as a second division club, he guided them to a respectable 6-4 record. With the loss of All-City Al Rivard and other ball players such as Marsh Levin and Buzz Meyers, the 1956 season did not have too bright an outlook. By fielding an all new, senior dominated starting five, Jacobi managed to hit upon the right combination to carry his team through the first two games of the District 17 playoffs. The Polar quintet was led by All-City center Tom Chandonnet and second team All-City Ray Lacher, who placed second and eleventh with 220 and 121 points respectively, in the city scoring race. Next year six boys will be returning to bolster the Polar squad, Don Pertinen, Dick Alford, Pat Donahue, Gary Madson, Vern Beckman, and Martin Dahl. time our Page 160 COACH JOHN (JAKE) JACOBI, the dean of city high school coaches and veteran of 26 years of coaching experience at North. James Keenan had several high calibre players, among them Paul Carlson who was the high scorer of the team, Dick Fowler who saw limited action on Jack Behrendt's A squad, and Dick Sandwick. Goalie Frank Sporna also contributed much to the Polar cause, allowing very few goals. FRONT ROW: Steve Rakos, Paul Carlson, Oave Zandlo, Dave Goldberg. BACK ROW: Bob Trombley, Jim Ketcham, Dick Sandwick, Frank Sporna. WE'RE READY FOR YOU ' seems to be saying Wally Ulmaniec, Tom Hasten and Fran Heck. Those boys comprised North's first line. HOCKEY CLAY RETHWILL, North goalie, seems well prepared to stop anything which may come his way. The 1956 pucksters missed a playoff berth by two games, placing sixth in city league competition, winning four, losing five and tying one. Depth is what Coach Jack Behrendt stressed and this yea'r he had it in the form of two equally good lines led by Wally Ulmaniec and second team All-City Bob Godfrey, three good defense-men in Don Harding, John Braasch and Pete Enck, and Clay Rethwill or Dick Paulson in the goals. In the coming year Behrendt will have to rely on this year's sophomore prospects as all the present team will be lost to graduation with the exception of Tom Hasfert, Dick Paulson and Chuck Arnold. SWIMMING The Polar swimming team, continuing its impressive record of last year, turned in a series of excellent performances. Coach George Sullivan's tankers posted a nine-win, one-loss record, losing the title match to Roosevelt in the final meet of the season. This year's squad had many standouts. Leading the team again this year were defending state 100-yard free style champ, Jim Quirk, who placed second this year, and city diving champ, John Konkol, who also placed second in the state. The medley relay team was composed of Fred Steere, Jim Bird, John Konkol and Jim Thurman. The back stroke, breast stroke and free style divisions were well stocked with talent which should be a big help next year. Jim Bird was the leading back stroker while sophomore. Bill Larson led in the breast stroke. Sophomore Doug Sacre placed third in the city in the free style event. North's chances for next year are excellent as Quirk and diver Denny Born are the only members lost to graduation. Carl Bohlin also brought home a second place win from the Duluth tourney. This was the highest place that any city skier garnered during the entire meet. Brandt and Bohlin were well backed up in their efforts by seniors Gary Lundquist and Tom Leonard and junior Dale Berg, as well as Tom Ryan, who was lost to the team for the last half of the season because of a broken leg. In fifteen years of competition, including this year, the Lew Burnett coached teams have compiled an almost unbelievable record of 15 city and state championships and two Region Five titles, as well as 200 victories against only one defeat in dual meet competition. Again this year all three classes were strong, the D class being led by Bill Hill and Wayne Hokamair while the C class was well represented by George Westlund, Gene Anderson and Wendell Collins. This year, as in the previous two years, the B class squad has had the services of Arnie and Ronnie Nyberg who have participated on three of North's championship teams. As a result of last year's graduation, Palm lost three of his top four linksters, Irwin Cook, Gaylen Bachman, and Jerry Longie. Mike Plitman was the only returning letterman. This dilemma was partially offset, however, by the fact that Plitman has been on the top five since his sophomore year. The 1956 golf hopes of the Polars rest heavily on his shoulders although he should get some support from several sophomores and juniors. Although the turnout was not as great as in previous years, Jack Behrendt had good material in what there was available. THE PAST SEASON found the girls' swimming team very active. They participated in two invitational meets, a preliminary, and the city finals. Blue Bell Dorn, the star of the team, took third in the 20-yard back stroke in the city meet. Members of the team shown above are: Joan Barnett, Michele Katz, Arleno Breycn, Blue Bell Dorn, Sharon Jude, Lois Irwin, Ruth Chatficld, Carol Young, and Carol Paulson. NORTH'S STAR DIVER is Judy Peal. The Swan dive has been her spocialty here at North. SWIMMING ONE of the three kinds of instruction offered to girls in the newly formed swim club is synchronized swimming. Here a few of the members are shown in a star position. MODERN DANCE consists of setting pattern to rhythms and of using descriptive motions to express an idea. Doing just such a pattern arc Naomi Davis, Sharron tedding, and Bev Hahn. MODERN DANCE GRACEFUL AS A BIRD. That's what can be said about Sharron tedding as she makes a leap into the air. OBTAINING GRACE AND POISE aro two of the advantages of taking Modern Dance. Sometime, after we go our separate ways. Our dear Mem'ries will dwell within us for all our days. Chorus: We leave our classes, friendships dear. The fun we've had at North this year behind us Though we must go with silent tears The days to come in future years will always find us . . . Hoping that someday soon we'll meet again Sharing memories we still remember then, Most of all are the memories we'll remember then.
