We think, however, of the atom bomb as a tool of progress rather than a weapon of destruction. NORTH HIGH SCHOOL, MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA This is the Atomic Age. It can he an age of peace and progress or one of war and destruction. Whatever the future brings, the Atomic Age is our age, ours, the future citizens of the world. Because of the importance of atomic energy in our lives, the Atomic Age has been chosen as the theme of the 1951 Polaris Annual. It is our purpose to emphasize that North High can be used as an example of the world. Here representatives of all countries, colors, and creeds work together in peace and harmony, utilizing their advantages for the good of all, and working together to solve the problems that arise. It should be possible, in this age of advanced civilization, for the nations of the world to live and work together in peace. We are all. in a sense, individual atomic bombs. With the right guidance, our individual qualities arc blended together as a unit, providing benefits for all. Atomic power, uncontrolled and unguided, can hurt and destroy. Leashed into constructive channels. it will do much for the good of mankind. The faculty of North is well equipped for the task of preparing its pupils to take their places in the world as conscientious and responsible citizens ADMINISTRATION To members of the Class of Nineteen Fifty-one: You have chosen as your theme “The Atomic Age Is Ours. We hope that the period will mean much to each one of you. Opportunities have been afforded you. To the extent that you have taken advantage of them, to the extent that you have developed spiritually, morally, physically and mentally you will be able to profit during this wonderful age. As the years come and go, new discoveries, new inventions, new possibilities of all kinds will come to light. Conditions will change perhaps for better, perhaps for worse. Only people and not machines can Ik the means through which this nation may maintain leadership. In your day your generation will determine the direction we will take. Each of us has possibilities. Each of us has responsibilities. What part arc you ready, willing and able to perform ? Do you wish to become more helpful and influential than now? Fortunately, for each of us the way is open. Let us prepare adequately for the challenges that may come to us. It is the hojK that each member of the class may measure up to his full capacity. ft. Principal To the class of 1951, I leave a brief challenge. You stand at the threshold of an unknown age, which has possibilities for real greatness. The world is waiting for your services, your ideas, and your leadership, toward making freedom more secure. Freedom should not Ik taken for granted. Although we may some day expect the release of atomic power to destroy man, let us have the intellectual and moral courage to use the powers of this age for peace and improvement of mankind. I know of humanity's story of blood and wars and revolutions, but I still believe in progress. There is too much good in man to Ik lost. Our faith must persuade us that the unperformed good in us can find expression. We all have potential resources, but must not lack faith in ourselves. When we have faith, the good in us comes to light, the strength in us makes itself felt, and the hope in us makes life's rewards worth while. Your future happiness will be conditioned by your willingness to serve to make the world a better place in which to live. 6 Miss Marti Rufus Putnam, superintendent Taking over the position of new superintendent of sehools September 27, 1950, was Rufus Putnam. In his program, Mr. Putnam would like to rehabilitate Minneapolis schools. He feels that only uninterrupted progress can enable the schools to serve the students adequately. North's Dean of Girls is Miss Viola Marti, who helps students plan their programs and advises them on school problems. Mrs. Martin, the visiting teacher, helps students with problems outside of school. She visits the homes and gives advice to those who need help. When faced with a tough problem, boys at North know they can turn to Mr. Anway, their new dean, to receive expert help and guidance. Keeping the school running smoothly arc Mrs. Adelaide Anderson. Eleanor lohnson. Delores Pearson and Mrs. Mabel Miller, North’s office staff. Mrs. Martin Mr. Anway Office Staff LUNCHROOM AND MAINTENANCE Deserving of our praise tor their excellent work is Alma Ledding, Ethel Hurtig. Annal Lcwcock, Julia Haynes, Alice Johnson. Francis Claussen and Esther Carlson, who make up the lunchroom staff. Edwin Shepherd, Mrs. Harris. Joseph DeMarsh. Albert Hammestcin, Frank Burns, Donald Rosccrans, Carl Ncl-vik. make up North's efficient maintenance crew. NURSE AND LIBRARIANS North’s angel of mercy is Miss Helen Dargay, who can generally Ik found in her room looking down throats or checking temperatures. 8 Helping the students keep up on fiction and world affairs as well as find material for class work is the job of Miss Ulvcsiad and Miss Klohn. Knowing that words wisely chosen can touch the hearts and sway the actions of men, students of Knglish work to understand the meaning and to feel the power of words. The students gain a real appreciation of fine literature, and an understanding of the fundamentals of grammar. They learn to make their writing concise, vigorous and colorful. Through the study of literature the student acquires an insight into human nature and by studying Shakespeare, Chaucer and other masters, he learns the variety of man's thinking and ways of living. We must also know how to follow current events intelligently. We get this knowledge in our social studies classes. 10 Josoph Brom Mildred Clarke Elmor Edlund Harriet Madigan Kenneth Spaulding Right to loft—Larry Covin, Sylvia Racknar, Joyce Decktar, Robert Ackarbsrg, Delano McKay. MATHEMATICS Everything from the difference between ten and twelve and x and y to the intricacies of solid geometry and trigonometry are studied by mathematically-minded students at North. Many of the students of North, under the instruction of our commercial department, will type their way into a successful business world of tomorrow. Bookkeeping, business Knglish, comptomctry, occupational relations, office training, secretarial practice, and shorthand arc other offered business courses. The girls as well as boys in the home economics classes arc taught not only to cook anil sew hut also how to budget their allowances. Home projects arc an annual occurrence in the “homc-ec” department; they vary from weaving, shell jewelry, and meal planning to scrapbooks. Thus students get some good reference material in some phase of home making. Helen Eayrs Emma Siehl Left to right—Patricia Zaksaiki. Therata Ottan, Joanna Holt, Donna Barry. All the shop classes are attended only by boys, except architectural drawing classes which seem to attract the girls, too. (Maybe they want to sec their dream house executed.) Auto, machine, metals, and wood shops are the other classes which give the students great familiarity with tools and knowledge of their use in daily life. ARTS AND CRAFTS Keeping in mind that very few students will become professional artists, the art and craft classes place emphasis ujjon the application of color and design to everyday living. The hum of the newly acquired jig saw, the scraping of sandpaper, and the swish of big paint brushes arc familiar sounds heard when art anil crafts students arc expressing their original ideas in many different materials. Wc will all have a share in shaping the future, and it is up to us to decide what kind of a future it will be. It is the job of each new generation to correct the mistakes and improve the work of the old one. The past generations have made tremendous strides in the Helds of science, medicine, transportation, and countless others. Perhaps it will be our job to improve the world in the Held of human relations. Hut with all the advantages of the Atomic Age at our disposal, wc arc bound to succeed. Extra-curricular activities play just as important a part in making us well-rounded individuals and responsible citizens, as do our studies. We cannot take our places in the world only on the strength of our academic knowledge; we must also have an understanding of how to get along well with other people. By participating in activities of our choice, we can do the things we like to do with people who also enjoy doing them. Through these new people we meet, we discover new interests, thus broadening our horizons in many ways. Only by being as versatile as the atom itself can we learn how to profit by its many possibilities. 52 ACTIVITIES 53 Bonn! Pauli, Joan Andarson, and Ruby Kroon. CLASS PLAY The house lights dim, an expectant hush settles over the audience, and the curtains part slowly. Then the stillness is broken by a shrill whistle, and the 1951 Class Play, Cheaper by the Dozen, is on. The flawless performances of all the members of the cast will always lie remembered by everyone who saw the play. A special ovation goes to Mary Breedlove, who lived up to the tradition that the show must go on. Mary went on in spite of illness, and turned in an unforgettable performance. Cicrald Roscnzwcig and Betty Waller should be commended for their magnificent portrayal of the parents of twelve children. Bonnie Pauli had the feminine lead as their eldest daughter, Ann. On April 17, the cast put on a performance at the Veterans’ Hospital. A great ileal of the success of the play goes to the director, Lillian lohnson, and also to Marlys Johnson, the student director. Sports represent the physical power behind our school, power that gives North its strength and vigor and life. In our school, this power is used for the benefit and pleasure of everyone. The cheerleader, the halfback or the forward, the student in the stands, all feel and contribute to the spirit which motivates the ream to action. Without this spirit, our school would be dull and lifeless. If the nations of the world could work together in peace and good will, utilizing the power of the atom, it would mean progress and a better way of life for all. 72 SPORTS 73 Marilyn Warnar, Ruby Kroon. FOOTBALL North, after a slow start, progressed into a strong aggregation during the last half of the season. Lack of reserve strength and injury to key players were the main reasons for the team's failure to do better. Coach Johnson developed a better than average team, and the Polars looked impressive in defeat, even though overwhelmed by superior manpower. The high point of the season was reached in the 14-12 defeat by West, which almost proved to l e the upset of the week. Even though facing successive defeat, week after week, the spirit of the team could not have been better; consequently, each game found the Polars playing an improved brand of football.
