THE 1950 POLARIS In our manufactory, North High, the 1950 graduating class leaves its fondest memories. Entering as young adolescents three years ago. we arc now prepared to leave as young adults. As you journey through this yearbook with us, imagine our school as a factory, where a sophomore enters as raw material, and after three years leaves as a finished product, ready to enter the adult world. Co 2 3 OUR MANUFACTORY An efficient, well-trained management is necessary to a successful manufactory. It is only through their painstaking efforts to train and oversee that young minds and bodies develop into strong men and women, physically and mentally capable of facing the future FOREMEN In one of his essays, Emerson asks this question: “What is the hardest thing in the world?” He answers: To think. During your school life, it is this the teachers have tried to help you learn to do. They have served you personally to the best of their abilities, and you have profited to a greater or lesser extent. Because of these beginnings, now, as you are about to leave this school, we hope that you will be able to make marked advances in this direction. After all, education is a continuous process. It is mostly through self application and industry that we arc likely to make the most progress. As you explore your way, may life’s journey I - at least as pleasant to you as it has been up to now. $ 2ft■ Principal To the class of 1950: Congratulations to the graduating class of 1950. Through the years which you have spent in school, you have acquired a certain amount of knowledge, and certain skills and attitudes. Education does not terminate upon graduation from high school. It is a continuing process. You will continue to learn from contacts with other people, from the work you will do, and from the literature which you will read. The skills you have acquired will assist you in your work, in meeting new people, and in meeting new situations. The attitudes and habits you have developed will determine your place in relation to your work, your community, and your associates. You arc entering the last half of a century. What will it Ik like to live in the year 2000? Our fast moving atomic age has dwarfed distances to the extent that we must live and work together regardless of race, color, or creed. In order to live in a world of peace, we must break down the prejudices that exist in the world today. In all history no great challenge has confronted the youth of our country. Assistant Principal Student Council This year the Student Council has made great advances in student government over previous years. Under the guidance of Miss Madigan, advisor, and Warren Johnson, president, the Student Council has successfully undertaken Student Government Day and student run study halls. 7 Mr. Herbert L. Bruner has proved to be outstanding in the field of education because of his ability as a school administrator. Through new and constructive policies he has sought to raise educational standards throughout the city. For many years, girls have looked to Miss Viola Marti for help in personal and school problems. We have been fortunate indeed, in having such a gracious anil understanding person as our counselor The school office may l e called the heart of North; the successful administration of the entire school depends on its smooth operation. The efficient helpful stall, responsible for seeing that the school business is well taken care of, is pictured here. 8 Mr. Johnson, a new arrival at North litis year, took only a short time to become adjusted to North. There arc many boys who gratefully acknowledge Mr. Johnson's helpfulness and kindness in solving their problems To protect the health of the students at North is Nurse Helen Dargay’s job. In this capacity she readmits those students who have been absent because of illness and supervises our health program No matter where you go or how many people you meet, you will never find any person more willing to help the people around her than our own Mrs. Martin. Her help is welcomed and appreciated by students and parents. 9 Lunchroom Staff Unheralded workers in our manufactory arc the people who take care of the preparation of food and the management of our lunchroom. Over-all manager is -Mrs. Claussen, and behind the scenes workers are Miss Alice Johnson, cook; Mrs. Esther Carlson, pastry cook; Mrs. Ethel Hurtig, teachers’ lunchroom; Mrs. Alma I.eliding, kitchen assistant on the boys' side; Mrs. Julia Haynes, kitchen assistant on the girls’ side, and Mrs. Anna Lcwcock. part-time kitchen assistant. Maintenance Crew Mr. DeMarsh and Mrs. Malm head our maintenance department. It is through their work that we arc able to maintain the good record of appearance for which we arc noted. Library Staff Helen Ulvciud, Mrs. Eva Wilson Ddoris Manning: Maureen Li bon: Delores Wiesman The library is the mainstay of the school. In it the students may do research for all of their subjects with the willing assistance of our two librarians. In addition to research material, there is also available a large selection of current fiction and periodicals Hilda Blesscn Ethel Crittenden Alice Davidson Frank Johnson Marion Gould Lillian Johnson Mrs. Della Lindsten Catherine Mandler Mrs. Beulah Pierce Velma Seder Mazie Shannon Mis. Gertrude Shephard Laura Sheintan Bertha Thorpe Mrs. Joyce Newman English Self expression through oral speech and writing, a real appreciation of line literature, and knowledge of the fundamentals of grammar are the objectives toward which the English Department strives. 11 Louis Burnett Tom Kennedy Astrid Johancon Mrs. Esther Bank Mrs. Phoebe James Emma Siehl Helen Eayrs Home Economics Cooking and sewing arc two courses offered North students to help them now and in future years. Though these courses arc attended mainly by girls, North’s boys also arc privileged to enjoy the training given by the foods classes. Athletics North's well-rounded sports program includes apparatus, baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and swimming. These classes arc enjoyed by most students and offer a pleasant diversion from school studies. Industrial Work Homer Fetz-er John Jacobi Walter Kbusier Auto shop, architectural drawing. machine shop, metals, and cabinet making are the classes which make up the industrial department of North. In these classes many boys prepare for future vocations. John Moore Richard Smith Courses in social and political problems arc covered in social studies classes of North. Through this course we hope to make our students responsible and happy citizens of our democracy and our world. Languages Foreign languages play a necessary role as travel increases in our modern world. North offers courses in German, Latin, Norse and Spanish. These courses teach not only basic grammar, but also fine literature. 13 Harriet A pel Pauline Farsclh Caroline Hunch Sciences With the scientific advance of the modern world, litis department is probably the most challenging in the school. It is in the various courses of biology, botany, physics, chemistry, and green house practice that the students learn the workings of our complex universe. Alfred Cliristopheison Samuel Perrin Matilda Krefting Uoyd Rutgerson Wilbut Palm Charles Smart Mathematics In this age of atomic bombs and chemical warfare, the science of mathematics has risen to an all time high in importance. Never before has it been so necessary for high school students to be able to balance equations anti figure dimensions as it is today. Courses in algebra, advanced algebra, geometry, solid geometry, and trigonometry arc offered at North. Joseph Brom Elmer Edlund Mrs. Ruth Livingston Harriet Madigan Kenneth C. Spaulding Commerical Work Graduates of the commercial course ofTcrcd at North are equipped to enter the business world with confidence. Day to day experience with modern office equipment and routine adds interest and appeal to the various phases of business education. Typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, office training, secretarial practice, business English, and occupational relations arc taught in the Commercial Department. J. Clive Clcjry Mrs. Clarice Etcliicd Music Mildred Read Mrs. Estelle Knudsen Art and Crafts Mrs. Knudsen and Miss Read supervise our excellent classes in art, exploring art, and crafts. Resides having the students do their regular class work, they encourage and direct the students in making other projects for their school and home activities. Many students spend a pleasant hour two in North's band, orchestra and eh classes. All groups have participated in ms school activities during the year. 15 The pride and joy of any manufactory is the finished product. Results of three years of patient and deliberate effort to develop the raw material by both workers and foremen at last becomes apparent, and the finished products, the senior graduates, arc at last ready to leave our manufactory and add to the progress of the world. The girls greatly enjoy taking part in the games which arc offered. They also show their enthusiasm by attending the many intra-mural games in which North participates. Another very important factor evident in these classes is the sense of good sportsmanship, which is so necessary in the future of any citizen. Dance Classes In the dance classes at North High the girls not only acquire a good sense of rhythm, but arc also taught to be graceful. They become limber by doing everything from ordinary exercises to leaping bounds over the Hoor.
