MINNESOTA—NORTH STAR STATE A little over one hundred years ago. the prodigal beauty of Minnesota lured, first explorers and then pioneers, into this land of ten thousand lakes; and, in 1849, Minnesota was officially proclaimed a territory. The first pioneers were awed by the magnificent natural beauty of this great state; they could look out over the broad, beautiful Minnesota Valley to the hills beyond, covered with dense forests of Douglas Fir and Norway pine interspersed with snow white birch forests, vibrant with the wild game that was once so plentiful in Minnesota. In contrast there was the wild dramatic beauty of Lake Superior with its rocky North Shore. Today, a century later, visitors to Minnesota still delight in these natural wonders, but in addition, our state has become enriched with a new growth, the growth of industry. The shores of Lake Superior teem with commerce from the great Mesabi Iron Range; St. Paul has become one of the country's large meat packing centers; and Minneapolis, with its jagged skyline, ranks high in the manufacture of textiles and in flour milling. And today, with the amazing advance of air transportation, Minnesotans look forward to the jiossibility of becoming the crossroads of the entire world. This year, as we celebrate the Minnesota Territorial Centennial, we students of North High School also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of our school. This institution, together with the others in Minnesota, has made its contribution to the tremendous progress of our state. It is only fitting, therefore, that we dedicate our book to 100 years of progress in Minnesota, the North Star State.
