. jV t.W' r %Y r.vp V}ws; 4 THE SENIOR CLASSES of North High School present the i V f- _ X Polaris Annual 1H9 Since North High was first founded in 1889, educational methods and the school building itself have changed a great deal. Some things, however, still remain and wc hope will never cease to exist: the personal interest of teachers in their students, the opportunity for young people to acquire the foundation of an education leading to active citizenship, the spirit of democratic cooperation within a varied group. 1 V i-W.. • A '_____. The first pioneers were awed by the magnificent natural beauty of this great state; they could look out over the broad, beautiful Minnesota Valley to the hills beyond, covered with dense forests of Douglas Fir and Norway pine interspersed with snow white birch forests, vibrant with the wild game that was once so plentiful in Minnesota. In contrast there was the wild dramatic beauty of Lake Superior with its rocky North Shore. Today, a century later, visitors to Minnesota still delight in these natural wonders, but in addition, our state has become enriched with a new growth, the growth of industry. The shores of Lake Superior teem with commerce from the great Mesabi Iron Range; St. Paul has become one of the country's large meat packing centers; and Minneapolis, with its jagged skyline, ranks high in the manufacture of textiles and in flour milling. And today, with the amazing advance of air transportation, Minnesotans look forward to the jiossibility of becoming the crossroads of the entire world. This year, as we celebrate the Minnesota Territorial Centennial, we students of North High School also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of our school. This institution, together with the others in Minnesota, has made its contribution to the tremendous progress of our state. It is only fitting, therefore, that we dedicate our book to 100 years of progress in Minnesota, the North Star State. GOVERNING COUNCIL A great leader, a great democrat, a great man: Floyd Olson will he remembered by the people of Minnesota for his uncompromising stand in their defense. North High is indeed proud of its most renowned alumnus. Mr. Herbert L. Bruner has proved outstanding in the field of education because of his ability as a school administrator. Although this is his first year as head of the vast Minneapolis school system, he has already, through new and constructive policies, sought to raise educational standards throughout the city. Mr. Bruner’s reputation shows that with him has come the highest quality of leadership. • To the Graduates of 1949: Our congratulations that you have successfully reached this point in your career and our best wishes for the future of each of you. We arc pleased to welcome the publication of the 1949 annual. As you peruse these pages in years to come, may you tc reminded of the pleasure of accomplishment of that which is most worth while in school life. May any disappointment you may have had serve only as incentive for improvement. May you always remember that North High is proud of its graduates and hopes that always they will be pleased to forward that which is for the highest good. • A. M. Bank Principal Our counselors, Viola Marti and Melvin Olsen, arc always willing to lend a helping hand in any way they can to the students at North High. In addition to their advisory duties they assist in student programing, employment problems, the school testing program, ticket sales, and faculty extracurricular assignments. 8 Mrs. Alice Jennings, credit clerk; Mrs. Adelaide Anderson, attendance clerk; Delores Pearson, bookroom requisition clerk and switchboard; and Mrs. Mabel Miller, chief clerk, arc the members of the office staff who keep the school running smoothly and efficiently. To protect the health of the students at North is Nurse Helen Dargay's job. In this capacity she readmits those students who have been absent because of illness and thus supervises the school health program. The Student Council under the direction of Harriet Madigan carries on many significant activities for the school. The various jobs of the council include the conducting of homecoming activities as well as Student Government Day. These and many other services make this organization a very important one to the school. Officers for the year were Duane Ekiin, president; Fred McCormick, vice-president; Marva Snyder, secretary; Jeanette Mattson, treasurer; and John I vers, sergeant-at-arms. We can always get sympathetic and understanding advice from our visiting teacher, Mrs. Mac Martin. In addition to solving students' personal problems, Mrs. Martin also serves as a home visitor. EXPLORERS OF LEARNING This picture, taken from the first North High Annual, the Walla-KaZoo of 1906, shows the inconvenience of studying in the halls. Today, however, North High provides large study halls and a well equipped and attractive library where students may find references for their classes. 10 The library is the mainstay of the school. In it the students may do research for all of their subjects with the willing assistance of our two librarians, I lelcn Ulvcstad and Mrs. Agnes Wciland. In addition to research material, there is also available a large selection of current fiction and periodicals. ENGLISH It is through the study of English that the student comes to a realization of the .ist insight into human nature to Ik found in literature. By studying Shakespeare, Chaucer, anti the other masters down to the contemporary Carl Sandburg and James Thurber he learns of the varying trends in man's thinking and ways of living. In the study of the English language itself, the student learns to express himself accurately and concisely and to communicate more easily and fluently. SOCIAL STUDIES Atomic energy, radar screens, the Marshall Plan—all these and more arc the subjects covered in our social studies department, lor it is here that the students become aware of the responsibility of the individual citizen in a democracy. SCIENCES With the scientific advances of the modern world, this department is probably the most challenging in the school. It is in the various courses of biology, botany, physics, chemistry, and green house practice that the students learn the workings of this complex universe. Faculty, left to right: Samuel Perrin, Matilda Krefting, Charles Smart, Esther Qucllo, Alfred Christophenon, anti Wilbur Palm. MATHEMATICS VacuUy; Kenneth S uukVing, MWdred Clarke, uoyd Rutger ton, Vneph Utom, mcr V.d un , Harriet Maihgan. In this age of atomic hombs and chemical warfare the science of mathematics has risen to an all time high of importance. Never before has it been so necessary for high school students to be able to balance equations and figure dimensions as it is today. Courses in geometry, algebra, advanced algebra, trigonometry and solid geometry arc offered at North. 18 BUSINESS Graduates of the commercial course olTcrcd at North arc equipped to enter the business world with confidence. Day to day experience with modern office equipment and routine add interest and appeal to the various phases of business education. Typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, office-training, secretarial practice, business English, and occupational relations, under the direction of specialized instructors has placed this department among the best in its field. ART AND CRAFTS All students who possess a special talent and arc interested in art arc urged to take a course in art, taught by Mildred Head. This year special interest has been given to art appreciation with great interest centered on the Fieri in Masterpieces. Work is done in textile design, still life, portrait painting, and posters on community problems such as cancer, tuberculosis and Red Cross, and school affairs such as tag day and the band concert. Exploring the arts is a new course which teaches basic structure of art, color. painting, advertising, costume, homemaking, architecture, sculpture, crafts, and community planning. Courses in crafts, under the direction of Mrs. Estelle Knudsen, arc open to all students who arc interested in designing and making practical articles. These articles arc made by using wood, clay, metal, fabric and discarded materials of all kinds. Completed projects include such items as make-up kits, stenciled towels, table decorations, etched glass, and clay figurines. Many a girl has wished she could make her own clothes and thus save herself some money. Here in North's two sewing rooms, attractively painted peach and white and green and white, students are taught the fundamental processes in the making of garments. At the end of one and a half years, the girls arc successfully making smart and well-tailored clothes. In order to do a good fitting, they must have a knowledge of line, design, and color, which, when combined, go toward the making of neat, attractive wearing apparel. In addition to that, they are taught consumer education, for they know the Importance of getting the most and the best for their money. Materials and patterns must be carefully selected to assure good results. Such qualities that go towards the making of good citizens, housekeepers, homemakers. anil managers arc encouraged. Faculty for the clothing department arc Fmma Sichl and Mr . Svea Candcaden. CLOTHING FOODS Faculty for the food department arc Helen Fayn and Mr . M. Phoebe Janie . More and more is the importance of good nutrition and the scientific planning of nourishing meals being stressed upon the modern homemaker. In the foods classes here at North, girls arc taught the basic essentials of good food planning and how to serve an appetizing meal in an attractive manner. Students give luncheons in the model dining room to help them gain confidence. Whipping up a tempting salad, a fluffy omelet, or a batch of biscuits is no challenge for these experts. In addition to meal planning the students arc taught economics, consumer research, and the place of vitamins and calorics in connection with good health. Students find working in the newly painted rooms, done in cream and green, a refreshing experience. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Faculty: Walter klaudcr, auto shop; Homer 1-Ctzer, mechanical drawing; Theodore Rrcck-heimer, wood shop; Howard Nenow, metal chop; and Stanley Hagen, machine chop. Under the direction of Stanley Hagen the boys in machine shop learn to use the machines to good and practical advantage. Architectural drawing under the direction of John Jacobi and Homer Fetzer, enables a student to have a better knowledge of the planning and the work in welding. Metal shop under the direction of Howard Nenow provides good background for later work in welding. Wood shop under the direction of Theodore Brcck-heimer provides an excellent opportunity for boys to master all the intricacies of special wood craft. In Mr. Fetzer’s mechanical drawing class boys arc taught to draw motors and simple machinery properly. Auto shop gives boys the opportunity to get some actual experience in repairing automobiles under the supervision of Walter Klauslcr. Important in the music life of our school is the a cappclla choir under the able direction of Mrs. Claris Etscheid. They have charmed many an audience with their lovely renditions of both old and new songs. Besides their yearly spring concert which provides wonderful entertainment for the entire north-side, they sing at many school auditorium programs such as the National Honor Society induction and baccalaureate service anti they also sing carols in the halls during the Christmas season. In addition to the a cappclla choir there arc smaller groups which make regular visits to the Sister Kenny Institute: a boys’ quartet and a girls’ trio. CHOIR APPLIED MUSIC Applied music provides an excellent opportunity for students seriously interested in music to learn the basic principles of composition and harmony. In the picture below the class is learning some of the fine points of harmony from one of its members. Although this course, under the direction of Harry Ranks, is taken only one day a week, it involves a great deal of home study and practice. i BAND AND ORCHESTRA Winner of many championships, the North High Band has gained fame far and wide. Its military precisions, streamlined movements and musical performances have been displayed at the football and basketball games and for various auditorium programs. Adding to the picturesque quality of the band are the color guards, the Hag twirlcrs and the gun twirlcrs. The concert band gives an annual program in the spring. A s i • - s The band and orchestra arc under the spirited conducting of J. Clive Cleary. Perfectly balanced in instrumentation, the orchestra is frequently called upon for performances and accompaniments. In addition to playing for the spring concert, the group plays for baccalaureate services and commencement exercises. Several selections were played during intermissions of the class play. 323—MISS APEL Top row: Grossman, K. Greenberg, Gustafson, Grove Ottney, Rubin, Gozansky, Gcrold. At first the pioneers and Indians were unable to meet each other on friendly terms but finally they reached grounds for mutual understanding. This year, all over the state many organizations arc celebrating the founding of this territory one hundred years ago. Here at North many extra-curricular groups have used the centennial as the theme for their season’s activities. 64 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Membership in the National Honor Society is considered one of the highest scholastic honors that can l c achieved by a high school student. Admission is based on the rating of the candidates according to their achievements in scholarship, leadership, character and service. Those candidates meeting the requirements arc then voted on by the faculty and members of the Honor Society. Induction is done by the traditional tapping ceremonies. This year the North High chapter, after several years of being an inactive organization, voted to adopt a program of activities. The first thing planned under the new program was an affair honoring the new members inducted in the spring. The officers of the Honor Society this year are Helen Duffy, president; Patrick Campbell, vice-president; Evclyth Schcchtcr, secretary; Carol Anderson, treasurer; and Richard Nordquist, sergeant-at-arms. Homer Fetzer is the faculty adviser. 70 HALL GUARDS The hall guards perform an active duty during each school day. They keep the halls orderly and quiet in order that classes will not lie disturbed. Harriet Madigan is in charge of this group. The service aids contribute an invaluable service to North. They act as pages, switchboard operators, attendance clerks, and assistants to the librarian. SERVICE AIDS STAGE CREW The stage crew is invaluable to the school, for it is this group that makes possible the auditorium programs. Their activities include the construction of class play settings, the painting of scenery, and the proper lighting effects. Under the direction of Joseph Brom they learn the fundamentals of stage management. |ohn I vers heads the group. 71 Hl-Y The purpose of the Hi-Y is to create, maintain, and extend Christian character throughout the school and community. The six Hi-Y clubs at North carry on individual activities as well as joint projects. Each club meets once a week at the home of one of the members, ami once a month they meet together at the North Side Y. North’s clubs arc Acmy, Greyhounds, Hi-Y-ans, Questionmarks, Stags, and Zenith. FOOTBALL Although North possessed two All-City men, Jack Dryer and Dave Solkvilz, the team's final standing was not as high as it could have been because of injuries to key players. 7’hc quality of the team can be shown by the fact that it was invited to participate in two night games at Nicollet Park. North was oil to an excellent start when they trounced a favored West team in the opening night game. The team remained dark horse most of the season because of the fact that they were mainly a veteran team with much experience. Even though the team enjoyed only moderate success, they proved to be a well coached outfit, thanks to Rube Johnson and the rest of the staff. Led by co-captains Hy Brand and Jack Dryer, pictured at left, the team maintained a keyed up spirit with a great deal of hustle throughout the season. 76 May I have this dance, Jack? lender crashes through for a first down. HOMECOMING Festivities in 1948 began with the traditional Homecoming auditorium on the date of our second football game. The program featured the coronation of our queen, Joanne Johnson, by Hymic Brand and Jack Dryer, co-captains of the football team. Joanne was elected by popular vote of the student body because of her unusual charm and friendliness to all. Attending the queen were Laura Patrick, Betty Lou Talso, Dorothy Cassidy, and Beverly Schoen. The queen and her attendants reigned over the North-Hdison night game at Nicollet Ball Park where the North High hand gave a spectacular exhibition between the halves. BASKETBALL As returning City champs, North became a pre-schedule favorite. Although they did not live up to this expectation, their showing was good enough to have three players, Carlscn, Dryer, Barnette (pictured with starting five above), named as honorable mention to the All-City team. It was obvious that the team felt the loss of three of last year’s starters. However, the team was a fighting one all the way, never conceding defeat until the last whistle. Being the best drilled team in the city, as arc all of ‘‘Jake Jacobi's teams, its defeats were caused by only a little cold shooting. First row: S. Bloom, R. Barnette, C. Carlscn, J. Martin, J. Perhaps most girls don't intend to be professional ball players, but they should know the rules well enough to enjoy watching or playing games themselves. Cooperation, leadership, friendliness and fair play arc rounded out from participating in sports.
