THE hi m; POLARIS The annual puhliojition of the graduating olassos of rVortli High Softool. Minnoapolis. 1 innosol a. Foreword MHA o- jTnt, i, 1 he North Star has been, and still is a guiding star to all navigators of the sky. To North high students it has an additional meaning; namely, all that is implied in the name “Polaris.” At the 1945 Homecoming program the Reverend Melvin Franck, June ’25, our guest speaker, gave a talk in which he combined the old saying, “Hitch your wagon to a star,” with the words of the popular song, “Swinging on a Star.” Wc were so inspired by his message that we decided to use his speech as the basis for the theme of our 1946 Polaris annual. Your editors have sincerely endeavored in this first post-war yearbook to portray actual school life and pay respect to those Polarites who so nobly served their great country in the armed services. Unselfish devotion to duty and a fearless, resolute steadfastness of purpose were symbolic character virtues of Myron F. Leslie. As a teacher at North from 1911 to 1946, his many years of educational service have made a deep impression and left a challenging inspiration among his many students and faculty associates. Few arc they whose labors were given so wholeheartedly for the benefit of society and not self. Mis contribution to the Minneapolis schools was most exemplary. In Moniuriam Ml Leshe-pasvtd awayALirch 2J . 1946, M • •• • • • •• - 7- fft SUPERINTENDENT W. E. GOSIJN Since ihc fall of 1944, when Willard E. Goslin came from Missouri to take the position of superintendent of the Minneapolis schools, he has done much for the students of North and other city high schools. His constructive policies have raised the standards of our city school system. A new professional spirit prevails and increased public support is evidenced by a new growth of interest in the service of our schools. Within the pages of this Annual you will find memories of those days which you spent with your associates, teachers, and friends. My best wishes go to you. the 535 young people who graduated from this school in the [anuary and June classes. You have chosen for yourselves wonderful ideals: The January Class, The light of our star; the light of our lives ; the June Class, lie compters who compters himself. You have set a good record as portrayed in these pages. Swinging on a Star will be a guiding light to us all, constantly reminding us of the attitudes, achievements, and ideals set forth by your school, North High. My very best wishes to the'' classes of 1946. H. II. MAASS, PRINCIPAL, NORTH HIGH SCHOOL —H. H. Maass Deans Our deans, Melvin A. MAINTENANCE LUNCHROOM North High Kauri The blue-uniformed North High School marching hand holds an enviable record of four “firsts and two seconds in the Aquatennial band contests as proof of its prowess. Polarites may well feel proud of the band, for it is more than a marching unit; it is also a concert band. Under the leadership of J. Clive Cleary, the band has often given programs for the school, and this year the group gave a short program at the city-wide vocal contest sponsored by the Apollo Club. For the last three years the North band has joined with bands from other schools to present spring concerts. These concerts have been further distinguished by the fact that Dimitri Mitropoulos, conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, has directed the combined bands. Majorettes Marilyn Moerbitz and Virginia Webster were the band’s two drum majorettes who graduated in the January class. Filling the empty shoes of these two versatile “twins” arc Gloria Johnson and Delores Lund, both of whom arc very capable performers. Supporting this pair is a group of twirlers from whom Mr. Cleary may draw at any time. 18 Flag Twirlers A colorful part of the inarching unit of our hand is the flag twirlers: Shirley Little, Beverly West, Jean Cruikshank, Doreen Kursu, and Gloria Johnson. Gun Girls Another vital division of the hand is the gun girls. Carol Trout, Jean Mol-siad, Gwen Manning, and Georgiann Nicholson arc the girls who twirl the guns. North is proud of the fact that they were the first of all the city high schools to have gun girls. Or liostra All students at North have heard and enjoyed the spirited school orchestra under the direction of Mr. J. Clive Cleary. Music for graduation. Baccalaureate services, “A”“B Senior day, and many auditorium programs is furnished by our orchestra. Tlie gang” not only plays it sweet, but when called upon they can give out with some swing. The orchestra assisted in the spring music presentation. i reative Musir A group of students from the Creative Music class having a discussion as to the merits of a music composition composed by David Kahn. Mr. Harry Hanks is special instructor in this department. From left to right arc: Mr. Ranks, Marilyn Anderson, Barbara Woodruff, Theresa Gagne. At the piano arc: Pat Downing, Harriet Heiligman, and Dave Kahn. 20 i olor (iuard The color guard, which hears the flags of our school and of our country in front of the hand, is composed of Sally Wolfe. Donna Sec, Patricia Ames, Donna Dummer, and Virginia Thot-land. Choir North's 93-member a capella choir, directed hy Hoy Tenney, is a revered institution of North High School. Choir concerts once a year and the annual Christmas caroling through the halls have helped to give the choir the position it holds in the hearts of North students and alumni. The picture hclow was taken at the fall presentation of “Elijah, November 30, 1945. Soloists for the oratorio were Catherine Hen nig, Ann O’Malley Calogly, Henry E. We would like to offer a special tribute to Mrs. Gertrude Shephard and Mr. Chester Johnson, who have so diligently worked with us and have so faithfully given their time; Miss Jane Thickens, who has supervised all the art work; Mr. Joseph Brom, who has handled the business side; Mardell Day, student photographer, who has taken all pictures; and all January graduates who came back so faithfully to help us. It was through their efforts that our 1946 Polaris Annual was a success. Conferences arc always necessary in mapping out future work of the annual. Shown here discussing the make-up arc Phyllis Iverson, Mrs. Gertrude Shephard, Delores Carlson, Dick Cassidy, and Mr. Chester Johnson. Plan .Makeup The annual this term went back to the traditional style of being printed once a year. Another idea restored was that of trying to put a picture of every North student in the annual. Joan Korengold and Phyllis Iverson were co-editors, and Gladys Kronberg, Charlotte Zack, Estelle Rose, Shirley Weinberg, and Al Chapman did the art work. The staff expresses appreciation to Miss Velma Seder, Polaris advisor, and the entire faculty for the help which they so generously gave. 31 Scholastic Honors The titles of valedictorian and salutatorian, awarded to the students who lead their class in scholastic achievement, were held in the January class by Beatrice Hull and Joyce Mark, respectively VALEDICTORIAN SALUTATORIAN National Honor Society % January members of the North High Chapter of the National Honor Society were: Israel Mirviss, society president; Dona Kenne, vice president; Joan Korcngold, secretary; Joyce Finkelstcin. treasurer; Margaret Dahl, Charlotte Zack, Beatrice Hull, Evelyn Montour. This year the June class was very fortunate in being able to hold their prom at the beautiful Automobile Club. This was a picturesque spot for such a gala affair. The prom was held May 31 with music furnished by Bill West’s distinguished orchestra. 'Trazy House Crazy House” was presented by the June Class on May 10, 1946. Mr. Saxby, Director; Naomi Rosen, Student Coach A mad, insanely merry farce given by the June class, provided plenty of action, pace, laughs and proved a grand success.
