As you peruse it, the many pictures will nudge your memory, and other great moments will unroll before your mind's eye. This book is a departure from the usual theme of memory for mem- ory's sake. In 1943 we know that the outcome of the war means every- thing-or nothingl We have geared ourselves for deeper thinking and tougher going. The bedrock truths upon which our forefathers founded this nation have a new meaning for us. Penny and'Pete, long prototypes of North's students, walk briskly through the seven divisions of this book, arm in arm with North alumni representing Uncle Sam's armed services. When the history of this war is written, the high school of 1943 will have a part in that history. This book unfolds a story of high school life at North proving, we believe, that H7144 .94 WMM 4114 THB Punrosr. of this nation in the great World War is to serve human- ity rather than to gain power of material resources, wrote Waldo W. Hobbs just twenty-four years ago this spring. Principal of North High School from 1892 to 1934, Mr. Hobbs laid ion that made North a school notable for excellence in scholarship, sportsmanship, and leadership. His will to do right, said one of .his pupils, led his students on. His stern yet gentle integrity the foundat moulded their lives. Mr. Hobbs passed away on April 2, 1943. wid 1 blog: ,. 1 . Wilmer of many championships, the band is North's greatest claim to fame in far places, for it is military in its precision, streamlined in its movements, musical in its performances. . . Adding to the picturesque quality of the band are the color guard, the Hag twirlers, and the gun twirlers. ln its concert repertoire are such numbers as Suite from The Bartered Bride by Smetanag Emperors Waltz by Iohann Strauss, Polka by Shostakovich: Barber of Seville by Rossini, Scheherezade by Rimsky Korsakov. In fulfilling his promise, Lew put eleven individual stars on the held, and coached them to play All for one and one for all. Charging fast, running hard, and always on the alert, the boys came through to rouse North from the depths of the second division to third place in the prep football standings. Last fall's team gave North its first conference win in three years, and reached the upper division for the first time since 1938. To the graduating seniors, the l9-42 Polar football team will remain a memory of North High School at its best. 2. Coach Lewis Burnett Maker of winning teams 4. Len Quiring . , . .Iron man tackle 3.
