To ma e its ideals The ideals of my school And of my life.'' Motto: Noblesse Oblige The National Honor Society have successfully undertook many projects this past year. They have converted many of the study halls into National Honor Study Halls; the pupils in these study rooms are Honor Society members and pupils who have been recommended by their home room teachers; they act as a self-governing body, and every six weeks elect a monitor to be in charge. This is a big step toward student government ii North which we hope will eventually become a permanent system in all the study halls. After every marking period, they score the scholastic ratings of the home rooms on the chart by the auditorium. This urges the students to better their ratings. NEVER A DULL MOMENT’ B. It gives pep to our extra-curricular activities of football and basketball. Last summer, the band brought more fame to North by winning the honor of being the best marching band in the Aquatennial Parade. STRIKE UP Photograph by George M. Ryan The trumpet trio is composed of Ernest Villas, Bert Anderson, and Wallace Kenneth. Photographi by Ccorgc M. Ryan Like ever)’ other organization the band, too, has its officers. They arc Helen Fleming. Boh Swanson, Delores Anderson, anti Ernie Villas. Who said North didn't have glamor girls? The Hag twirlcrs and cowgirls of the band arc smiling proof that we have plenty. THE B Under the direction of Ernest Villas, the Pep Band adds zest to many of our auditorium programs. Recently, the orchestra has been brought to the attention of the Polaritcs by their excellent performances in the auditorium. The direction of the orchestra has passed from Mr. Nervig, who was transferred to Patrick Henry, to Mr. Clive Cleary. ORCHESTRA These spirited players make up the clarinet quartet. The players are Shirley HotTman, Marion Johnson, Walter Ley, and Helen Fleming. Deesa VitofT and Saranettc (ioidman. two members of this talented quartet, arc accomplished violinists. Joyce -lyn Stanek and Catherine Simpson, who play the cello and viola, respectively, complete the quartet. ATTENT ON Each section of the orchestra has its leader. They arc as follows: First violin, Deesa Vi toff; second violin, Norma Johnson; viola, Catherine Simpson; cello, Harry Hales; bass, Dick Zclmcr; clarinet, Shirley Hoffman; trumpet. Ernest Villas; French horn, Paul Binstock; trombone, Russ Taft; percussions, Larry Gruman. The North High Singers is an organization composed of a select group of voices. Harmony - - Our Motto Between scenes, Robert Brix converses with Phyllis Histen, Eva lean Pettes, and Phyllis N'eit-zcl. The Taming of the Shrew Eva Jean Pettes made a very convincing shrew. Petruchio (Robert Brix) tells his troubles to a sympathetic Bianca (Phyllis Eisten). Petruchio (Robert Brix) carries off Kathrina (Eva Jean Pettes) after their marriage. Petruchio kneels before Kathrina. 38 Mollies preserves will save the store. Shirley Pcarlove, Mollic; lerotne Sicora. Jim; Jean Lath-rop, Nell tighten the caps on the fruit jars. It Happened in June Will you go to the strawberry social with us?” ask Randy and Charles, Stanley Troup and Lloyd Hide, of Betty and Susie, Marion Kost and Minnie Justcr. •Til foreclose that mortgage,” says Jarvis Sneed (Donald Lang), the meanest man in the county, as he threatens pretty Betty Branson (Marion Kost), owner of the Shady Grove grocery store. 39 The North High Carolers sang inspiring carols that gave everyone the Christmas Spirit. Merry Christmas Audrey Eckland and Adcll Carlson made a very charming picture in their colorful Swedish Costumes. Mr. Tenney was too engrossed to notice the photographer snapping his picture. 40 The audience nearly collapsed at Meyer Jacobs’ rendition of the Blue Danube. Ernie Villas looks on in amazement as Charles Beasley wheels the fainting Meyer out. Senior The Girls’ Trio—Phyllis Hansen. Everyone learned exceedingly fast, and Joyce Kronstedt, Jeanette Lorentzen, and Marilyn Mal-chow played like professionals. | 90 WE’RE OFF! I liking is a very popular sport with the girls. They all felt that the weather in the fall was too nice to miss, and so they all went hiking. Sometimes the hike turned into a weincr roast at Glenwood. They also enjoyed hiking during the spring term. ITS FUN Everyone has a hike and at North they get a chance to u c them. The girls took long rides in the fall and really enjoyed them. Hiking has long been a favorite at North. Shown arc Gloria Grey, Joyce Powers, Sarah SalTrin, Kathleen Reagen, Peggy Reeves, Dolores Rust, Pat Noldcn, and Mary Lou Kowalczyk. STRIKE! The girls have a set of duck pins in the gym and under the supervision of Miss Lang they all learned how to bowl. After a few weeks the girls began to bowl at Ascension. Eileen Kohling is shown rolling one down. 92 ITS A BUCKET! Always a popular sport at North, baskctiull went over big this year. Shirley Burk proved to be the star of the show with her dazzling floor play. BRRRRRRRRR It was a bad winter for skating, but a few old faithfuls put on their lightest winter clothes and went out for a spin on the ice. The ice was soupy but everyone had fun. OUR POINT! This is a game that a lot of girls can take part in. No one has to lie good. Everyone is out for a lot of fun and they really get it. STREAMLINED! This year North's famous Modern Dance class gave two programs at school and took part in a Dance Conference at the Y. W. C. A. Here the girls are shown doing the push up. MODERN DANCE Shown are Jean Lathrop, Gladys Sigfrincous, and Evelyn Kcc in a lift at the end of a turn. 94 PING PONG r This is a fascinating sport, and one of the least strenuous. It is taught in the individual sports class. SPLASH! Swimming, the best exercise in the world. Here the kids arc swimming at Ascension. Jean Lathrop and Evelyn Chu-purdia throw Shirley Burk in. and Marie Kallbcrg, Carol Robin, and Lucille Nanfclt swim at you. Spring QtuJ Summer Sports WATCH THE BIRDIE! The girls had a doubles tournament this year. Jeannette Lorcnt cn and Shirley Burk came out on top with Marie Kallbcrg and Dolores Sugg close seconds. Badminton, a fairly new sport, has caught on fast at North. 96 ONE .. TWO .. THREE Exercise is good for health and the figure. All girls know that. Here the girls do some calisthenics to loosen themselves up. RACQUET— RACKET Here the girls practice their serves. As soon as the weather got nice in the spring they went out and played in the courts by the football field. “N GIRLS These girls have earned 600 points by going out for the different sports offered at North. These girls are now working for their (J. A. A. EMBLEM GIRLS Mary Jane Bolstad, Joyce Kronsiedi, Jeannette Lorcnt-zen, Marion Hagen, Shirley Burk, and Mary Lou Kowal-czyk have hit the top. They have earned 1.000 and received their emblems. RAH! RAH! The kids who keep you jx:ppy. They did quite a job of cheering us through a dismal football season and a thrilling basketball season. May Fisher, Ronny Bistidue, Janice Taylor. Forest Grant. HOORAY! It's a homer! That’s what they holler when Joyce Kronstedt advances to the plate. There's nothing like a fast diamond-ball game to keep excitement high. Evelyn Chupurdia catches Shirley Burk in a slide and Peggy Reeves takes her cut. WATCH ME! The G. A. A. gave two parties for the incoming IOB's this year. One was given in the Fall term, the other in the Spring term. The girls went for them in a big way. From top to bottom, competing in an obstacle race, arc Edythc Bingham, June Stein, and Joyce Phillips. The two aggregations battled to a 6-6 tic. Note quarterback Grayzek blocking two Teddy defenders. A vehement handshake, a bit of humor, and the introduction of coaches and captains was accomplished. Coach Guzy and Captain Erickson of the Tommies were greeted by acting Captain Rovick and North grid mentor 1 .arson in a pre-game confab. Incidentally both captains held down line posts, Erickson cavorting from an end position and Don Rovick holding down a tackle berth. 'Hie Polars came on the field with “V” for victory chalked on their uniforms as can lie seen on Captain Rovick’s moleskins. The championship North hand entertained between halves, led by drum-major Kenny Eldrcd. Only the 14-0 Edison win marred an otherwise perfect Homecoming I ay. They drove through several highly touted aggregations participating in only one close contest, a 13-12 decision over West. Inspired by the play of speedy Roinaine Johnson, line cracking Tom Young, and glue-fingered Lorentzen, the Polars piled up 108 points as against 24 by the op| osition in five tussles. Under the tutelage of Coach Burnett the sophs reached football heights unattained by previous Polar soph elevens. Soph Sensations Pictured below is Coach Louie Burnett and his sophomore footballers, who racked up a sensational record in the past campaign. These husky lads are the nucleus around which next year’s MA squad will be built. Several of the lads showed up well enough to be chosen to work out with the “A” squad during the past season; speedy Romainc Johnson managed to see service in a league contest. Should these lads keep up their fine work, North's gridders may be a threat during the next prep foothall season. Battlin' Running through some brushing-up drills, the Polar baskctcers come dribbling down the court in the North gym. Driving forward (left to right) arc cagcrs Hugo Thompson, Eddie Johnson, Bob Moran, Joe Frisch, and Dick Braun. Drills such as these produce adept dribblers and skilled bucketeers. The midseason loss by graduation of cagcrs Jim Hallman, Henry Goldstein, and Ernie Perry (left to right) weakened the Polar cage squad and ended all possibility of copping the league crown. All three of these baskctcers were All-City material and one or two of them would have garnered this honor had they completed the full season’s play. t Captain Bob Moran (3) receives the ball during the course of the basketball contest between the Polars and the Washburn Millers. Coming up from the rear is North eager Dick Braun. Despite the brilliant efforts of Coach Jacobi’s team, Kay Ross’ boys downed the Polars. Bucketeers Coach Jacobi’s Polar cagcrs finished the 1942 season with a record of five wins and four losses, in spile of the fact that they were weakened by midscason graduations. Hob Moran, Polar backcourtman, stands jx iscd to shoot as three Edisonites rush up to hinder the attempt. Hob starred defensively tor the North quint in the close contest with Edison. The American spirit of good sportsmanship was demonstrated during the pre-game warmups for the North-Marshall soph basketball game. Two Polar cagcrs namely Red” Idclkopc and George Moran playfully tug at the ball with one of the Marshall courtmcn. ■Hie sophomores were members of the Goodwill League as well as the regular city high school circuit. Coach Perrin’s squad also participated in a contest with the Emanuel Cohen Center varsity five with receipts going to the Red Cross. Several prospects were found among the sophs for next year’s A” squad, which should brighten Coach lacobi’s hopes. Gazelle-like George Patten completes a set on the horizontal bar. Note the grace of Patten’s leap as he drops matward. George was North’s leading point man and the ace of the blue and white squad. A topnotch apparatus man is Jimmy Peterson, pictured on the flying rings. Note the determination on Jim’s face as he goes through his set on tlic rings. Jim, a senior, is an all around athlete, having competed in several other sjx rts. He writes finis to a brilliant athletic career at North. Tiny Donnie Peterson pictured on the parallels has been a leading point man for North’s champions. Don, who has still another season before him, is expected to cop even greater honors than he has to date. Diminutive but well built, Don speaks proudly of the exploits of the gym squad. Another all around athlete is gymnast Dick Sandblade. Dick is pictured during a workout on the horse. The grace and agility which Dick displays in gymnastic capers have made him an important part of Coach Louie's gym plans. A relatively new sport at the Polar institution is wrestling. The mat sport, however, is growing, and more and more potential grapplcrs arc kidding for spots on the Polar mat squad. The grunt-and-groaners work out daily with a valuable pointer now and then from Tom Kennedy. In the not too distant future wrestling may assume an important position on North’s sport calendar. Several of the matmen were absent when the catch-as atch-canners posed for their photo. Gruntin' Grapplers Soarin' n slalom Living up to their reputation, the men of the “North” crowned themselves with skiing glory by dethroning Duluth Central as state ski kings. Maynard Erickson carried off the individual jumping title as the Polar team won slalom honors and placed second in jumping and cross country. Don Swanson and Jack Proulx copped second and third respectively in slalom. Maynard Erickson equalled the intermediate record at Theodore Wirth and won the intermediate division crown in a meet later in the season. Coach Kennedy’s aces are Roland Proulx (kneeling), Jim Peterson. Don Swanson, Maynard Erickson, and Lyman Barclay (left to right). Versatile I-ou Burnett, gym instructor and coach, is seen calling the roll of his gym squad. Perhaps Lou is visioning potential athletic heroes. Triple threat halfbacks, high-scoring cagers, point garnering gymnasts, and standout diamond stars—these and many others arc uncovered in daily gym classes. Today’s all-city hero is yesterday's gym squad leader. The gym department under Messrs. I ou Hurnett and Tom Kennedy has assumed a more important position than ever, in America’s efTort to build up the human hotly. North’s gym squads arc coached through all manners of physical exercises besides being allowed to try their hand at intra-group sport events. “A sound mind in a healthy body is the slogan for North’s gym students. Polar Potentials Polar Pugs North’s fistic heroes under Coaches (iuzzi, Williams, and Booghcry, staged an outstanding boxing tourney. These prides of North’s pugilistic row proved that intra mural athletics can draw crowds. With the true eagerness of amateur boxers, these men of fistiana threw leather and stopped it without flinching. Ruben Justcr, who was ineligible to compete in the tourney because of having previously won the heavyweight crown, copped city novice heavyweight division honors. Several other ex-North plugs have become well known in city amateur boxing circles. Sometime in the not too distant future boxing may again become an interscholastic sport in the city’s high schools. RoHickin' Racqueteers The Polar netmen wound up a successful tennis season, copping the runner-up slot in the high school net circuit, while the West Cowboys led the league standings. Tins was the initial time the Polars had copped a first division spot in the past six net campaigns. Absent at the time this photo was taken were netters Norman Fidclman. Sherman Richter, and William Gilson. The past season found two brothers on the squad, namely “Babe anil Harry Shragowitz. and both played a top brand of prep tennis for the Polars. The Polar diamond men have fairly dominated the prep haschall picture of late years. Coach Tom Kennedy has a record of which he may well be proud as a high school haschall mentor. Tom's Terrors Coach Louie Burnett is pictured with his two top trackmen Catapultin Cal Jacobs and Flying Ferrin. These two were potential points in every meet in which they competed. Diminutive Cal was a sprinter and the state’s top broad jumper, while Ralph proved to be a a standout 880 man. Coach Burnett’s lads were a serious threat to opposition, and the squad as a whole was a leading threat for top honors. Cal lacobs has lived up to publicity notices, having been regarded as a track sensation while still in junior high. Ralph Ferrin, however, was unheralded when suddenly he began to win meets and smash track records. These two lads arc a coach's dream and truly the apples of Coach Burnett's eye. Cavortin' Cindermen Coach Louie Burnett turned out a formidable track aggregation, and the following lads made it so: Row 1: Tom Sullivan, Dick Sandbladc, Stanley Adlcn, Frank Johnson, Ralph Ferrin, Allen Gartz, Cal Jacobs, Charles Nelson, James Forcica.
