The flip of a coin was needed go decide which team would meet Washington High foT Twin City honors. Tom Kennedy representing North, won the toss but the Polars bowed to their down river rivals, 2S-0 on Armistice Day. The Bears opened the season against the Cardinals of Marshall and were set back, JO-28. After a bye North dropped a heartbreaking 35-34 contest at the hands of Central. BASEBALL 1938 Finishing with a record of three wins against five defeats, the Polar nine gained a tie for sixth place with Marshall. Proceeding this defeat, the Polar3 had been victorious over Marshall,South, Roosevelt, and Vocational jOther teams to defeat the Northmen this year beside Central are West, Washburn, and Edi son. •SUMMING 1939 Finishing the 1939 season with a record of one victory against five defeats, the Polar Mermen gave promise of developing into a powerful contender for championship honors next season. The Northmen won their only meet of the year from the Tommies of Edison. On their trip to Rochester, the Polars were defeated 56-19. Tne swimming meets were held at the Y.M.C.A. pool. SKATING 1939 In the annuel city high school skating meet at powderhorn Park, the North blade-men scored five points to gain fourth place among other high school teams. Marshall easily won first place for the second consecutive year. Meanwhile North's crack relay team made up of Jones, S. Weinstein, Trumble, and Nyberg, accounted for all the Polar points as they romped off with this event of the meet. SKIING 19 39 North High's ski team was defeated for the first time in three years, as Washburn nosed them out in the annual meet at Theodore Wirth Park. Henry Hansen, son of the former Olympic star, paced the Mi 1lers,scoring ten of their sixteen points. In the cross country race, which was also won by Hansen, Don Peterson of North, placed third. APPARATUS 1939 North's apparatus spuad finished a highly successful 1939 season by winning the class B championship, in the Northwest Meet. The Polars came in second in the class C division. HOCKEY 1939 For the first time since 1922, hockey became a competitive sport at North High School. Harold Gregory, in his first year at North was chosen coach. The Polars won one game, lost three, and tied one during the regular season, losing to the title winning Washburn crew in the final contest.
