We,-in the past three years, have instilled a part of us That good or bad, shall survive us here in the dust of This school. We are taking up the challenge Left by those before us whose voices echo in the quiet air, Whose feet had met these steps with equal youthful dare And passed on to greater things. Let that, then be the goal of you and me: To strive toward greater things. As the grim eagle on mighty wings Flies on and up, up beyond all sight, We, too, must push on. For life is what we mold it to be, Obeying the chosen word, paying the given fee, Life will not ask our choice of ways, Why then, let Chance be the chooser? We must not shame either those before-or those coming, For they have entrusted in our hands the world and life! Page Two STEPPING STONES By Ann Cheney The curtain falls, As when a play is done, And we who stand upon the stage Await a curtain call. There comes to those Who've helped us play our parts A glowing satisfaction, That they have helped To guide, influence, and inspire The perfection of our roles. And now the curtain rises Once again, And, as we stand before The gathered throng And feel the end is near, Let through all minds pass Swift and sure, That we are just beginning here. This play was but a stepping-stone To greater plays, An isthmus In the geography of our livesg A mountain that was scaled, A river that was fordedg Or, a tree across the road. Each barrier, long ago, Was broken in a different way: A body with balance And feet with agility Danced over stepping-stones, The isthmus bowed To the huge locks constructed, The railroad tunnelled its way Through the mountain, Some pioneers forded The river before them, By roping large logs To the sides of their stage-coachg And one lone woodman With a team of gray horses Cleared the brown road Of the tree which had fallen. And also in this manner, We must play each role, For even when we do not see them, Even when the footlights blind us , The spectators are always watching Be they heaven'sg Be they earth's. There sit the critics, The cynics, The hard-to-please, Likewise the easily satisfied, And the intelligently appreciative. We play to them all, We each must play well, Never dropping out of character, Motivating our action, Going steadily onward. And if we should encounter Some defeat, May it not beat us To the ground, But, rather, be an impetus To do a greater thing. And while we strive To do this greater thing, To play a greater part, Within us May we always know That many simple acts Are great. Then, let us hope together, That none of us will lose The enthusiasm for lifeg That this production Will guide us to a future So much better, That we shall never wish We might relive The past again, But direct our steps Toward that which comes, Yet keep this play As a wonderful memory, Cherished in our hearts.
