Nancy Armstrong discovers the fetal pig through dissection during a Biology lab. Through instruction in typing techniques, capable students are trained for business. Students patiently anticipate the results of a chem experiment. In his computer science course, Mr. Schlosberg gives personal attention to his future computer programmers. Modular scheduling has increased the opportunity for extra help and more frequent student-teacher conferences. 236 SCHEDULING Students use the extensive facilities in the library and in resource centers during unassigned time. Resource centers provide materials for a more concentrated study in a particular area. Educational tapes and recordings are available in both the Language and Business Resource Centers; also, filmstrips and cartridges can be found in other resource centers. 237 As a result of a federal grant for the arts. North Haven students have had the pleasure of working with such artists-in-residence as Jeff London, sculptor,- Richard Place, filmmaker; Ethridge Knight, poet; and Martin Kuschner, drama director. Jeff London Unassigned time permits students to assemble in small ensembles to practice and develop their particular talents. 238 The flexibility of modular scheduling enables students to choose from a diverse curriculum. Thus there is an opportunity to engage in the study of such a course as Film as Literature. The recently formed Student Action Group (SAG) has introduced several significant new programs. They have instituted mini-courses such as Philosophy of Education, Anthropology, Film Viewing, and Guitar Instruction. In addition, they have invited speakers and have held open forums for the benefit of the student body. 239 240 241 A preview of Graduation 71. iff SffiWOKK cmd( w II • '•  • • «• 'i 0 . v BOVS •;1T‘C0-ID( SIMM l U TUU  I AUCWtV 004 OWN 242 1015432 There's plenty of apple pie left on my moustache in case I get hungry later. Many changes took place at N.H.H.S. the year we arrived as freshmen. Since Orchard Hill Jr. High was being built, the old junior high became the West Campus of the High School. Modular scheduling was introduced to North Haven during the second semester. Seeking to represent our class several students began campaigning for office. The results of the elections left us with a strong slate of officers with which to begin our high school career. Gary Pallman was elected President, Pat Marcarelli-Vice-President, Gloria Muzio-Secretary, and Mark Pelliccio-Treasurer. Our Class Advisor was Miss Panagrossi. The first social event of our high school years was our semi-formal dance, Purple Haze . We will all remember the excitement as we engaged in decorating for the dance. Our sophomore year was one of renovation and revolution for our class. We began our first full year of modular scheduling. Realizing the inadequacy of student goverment at N.H.H.S. the Class of '71 established its own governing body. This body, known as the Executive Board, consisted of members of our class. The Executive Board made certain decisions, and offered numerous suggestions at weekly meetings. These representatives then made weekly reports to their respective homerooms. The main purpose of this body was to open the line of communication between members of the class and the class officers, who were Harry Tallon, President; Ralph Dauria, Vice-President; Gloria Muzio, Secretary; and Cathy Crossley, Treasurer. Another function of the Executive Board was to formulate social events. The Sophomore Sock Hop occurred on November 22, 1968. The Tri-Power provided the music, which filled the West Campus Gym from 8 to 11 o'clock. Contributing to the success of the dance was the refreshment stand set up in the cafeteria. Members of the Executive Board baked cookies. Our annual Christmas Assembly was originated this year. The morning of Dec. 23, 1968 found the Class of '71 entertaining the West Campus with many humorous skits. Our version of Twas the Night before Christmas and the teacher scene in the cafe highlighted the show. Dancers, singers, and musicians provided more serious entertainment. Was that really Todd Shepard who appeared on stage in his underwear after emerging from the boys' lavatory scene? Barbershop Quartet L to R — Bill Benzel, Bill Schwartz, Dave Clarke, Dennis Dietrich. Seated — Mark Pelliccio. 258 Mr. Dillon extinguishing a fire in boy's lav. The Sophomore Class party was held on April 18r 1969 in the West Campus Gym and Cafe. Certainly we recall the innocent water pistol fight, which progressed to the hurling of buckets of water at students and teachers alike. Flooded corridors and lavs were all part of the aftermath of the party. As the close of another year at N.H.H.S. approached, the Class of '71 engaged in its annual picnic. With Mr. Finnegan as one of the chefs the picnic was a success. Amid watermelon and softball games the weather began to change. Before the evening was over we were notified by the police of tornado warnings. The picnic was moved indoors and the merriment proceeded. 259 Not many students were able to remain dry. Although their clothes were dampened, their spirits remained undaunted. Mr. Finnegan tends the hotdogs as Maria Ballin looks on. Katie O'Brien and Linda Fonteyn preparing refreshments provided by the class. The opening of another school year found the Class of '71 on the move to its new home in the East Campus. It was also a year of change for the administration at N.H.H.S. Our principal. Dr. Rotondo, was named the new Superintendent of Schools in North Haven. Mr. Burrer took over Dr. Rotondo's position at the High School. We held our junior class elections in October. This year the candidates for office were required to make speeches before the entire junior class. The results of these elections were Harry Tallon-President, Sally Kotchian-Vice-President, Gloria Muzio-Secretary, and Denise Barbuto-Treasurer. Our class advisors for this year were Miss Panagrossi and Mr. Reed. Another great event in October of our junior year was the receiving of our class rings from Panikoff. Jewelers. Our annual Christmas Assembly was held on Dec. 23. The show opened with a salute from the Mickey Mouse Club with Bill Benzel as our head mouseketeer. Twigs, potato sacks, and brown leotards clothed the reindeer in the Rudolph scene. The laughter continued with Mark Pelliecio as Mr. Burrer and Miss Batrow and Mr. Scimone as delinquent students. N.H.H.S. Mouseketeers On the evening of March 13 the juniors gathered at the East Campus for their annual class party. The evening progressed with dancing, eating, and various games in the gym. 260 Gobe Rudrinski and Nancy Porto — Hava Nagila. Two of the swinging members of the Class of '71. Early in the Spring we began to hold meetings to formulate the most important social event of our Junior year. The date for the Junior Prom was set for May 16. Committee chairmen were selected and various committees began to form. The committee members were astounded by the staggering amount of preparation required to hold such an event. The theme was selected. Nirvana lent itself to many decorating ideas. It was decided that we would strive for an oriental decor. The final decorating took place on May 15th and was carried over to the day of the Prom. Purple and blue Streamers enclosed the gym. The center attraction was a bridge surrounded by a small pond and flower garden. The committee members took even more pride in their work when the administration and faculty remarked that it was one of the most beautiful proms N.H.H.S. had ever had. The after-prom was held at Bill Miller's Cheri Shack. The Family Jewels provided the music, which lasted until 4 A.M. The Junior Class Picnic was held on May 29, 1970. Grills were provided for hamburgs and hotdogs. However, some of our less industrious classmates sent out to McDonalds'! Those attending the picnic enjoyed themselves. Perhaps some of us even got to ride on Rich Hasting's motor bike. Bob Frame and Rich Hastings at the Coke dispenser. 261 A familiar sight. In search of new fund-raising schemes, the Junior Class ran a week long breakfast in June. Members of the Executive Board served orange juice, coffee, and donuts in the cafeteria. This breakfast was a success for both the faculty and the students. The morning of June 13th found members of the Junior Class armed with sponges and buckets. By 10 o'clock, the Junior Class Car Wash was in progress, and it lasted until 2 P.M. Wet and tired, these juniors returned home to prepare themselves for a week of exams. Since you were an early bird . . . As the time for senior class elections drew near the usual campaign posters began to appear in the halls. Catchy campaign slogans worked their way into students' conversations. Shave your legs and vote for Tallon was one of these slogans which appeared as the controversy as to whether or not boys should be allowed to wear shorts to school flared. Senior elections took place on June 5, 1970. Each candidate made his or her speech before an auditorium filled with prospective seniors. The results were: Gerry Coc-chiaro. President; Sally Kotchian, Vice-President; Gloria Muzio, Secretary; and Denise Barbuto, Treasurer. 262 To tell you the truth, Gloria, I don't think I could bear to look at another car. Graduation for the Class of '70 was held on June 19th. A number of students from our class served as Honor Guards, Ushers, and Usherettes. On Sept. 9, 1970, the Class of '71 re-entered the halls of the East Campus of N.H.H.S. as upperclassmen. Our previous election of officers enabled us to begin our senior year activities at an early date. With Miss Panagrossi and Mr. Reed as advisors, plans were made for our Senior Class Car Wash, which was held on Sept. 25 from 2:30 to 5 o'clock. During the next two months plans were made for our Senior Class Sock Hop. The dance took place on November 25 in the East Campus Gym. As the Christmas season approached, the famed annual Christmas Assembly of the Class of '71 began to take shape. Roaring laughter filled the auditorium on the morning of December 23. Members of our class jitterbugged their way through a take-off on ABC's American Band Stand. Gloria Muzio, as Shirley, and her three misfit bachelors produced a novel version of the Dating Game . Perhaps another one of the more memorable scenes was The Twelve Days of Christmas. Our classmates portrayed every verse from the patridge in a pear tree until the stage was crowded with drummers and milkmaids — Except the three French hens were none other than Miss Panagrossi, Miss Satterlee, and Mr. Cayer (?). There were many decisions to be made on our return from Christmas vacation. Plans for Graduation and pre-Graduation activities had to be formulated. A Senior Class assembly was held to discuss Awards Night. An Awards Night committee was formed, and a poll of the senior class revealed that we wished to bypass tradition and hold an informal Awards Night with attendance optional. The next assembly took up the topic of Graduation. Many proposals were made concerning caps and gowns, the Alma Mater, Speeches, and the decor. Guy Muzio and Ralph Dauria headed the committee which drew up a poll to be taken of the seniors. Another graduation at North Haven High School was about to take place. With the close of this school year our high school career would be ended. The Class of '71 was leaving N.H.H.S. with many aspirations. The past four years were lived as a preparation for the future. We looked upon graduation not as a termination, but as a liberation. We now were to assume those positions for which we had prepared. The history of the Class of '71 at N.H.H.S. has come to a close. Our journey over the past four years has led us to a bend in life's path. We know not what is ahead of us, but we do know what is behind. It is for these memories that we extend our gratitude to N.H.H.S. and our fellow classmates of the Class of 1971. 263 Enjoy what thou hast inherited from thy sires if thou wouldst really possess it. I, Karen Valden, leave my gym suit to any one of my sisters, Helena, Florence, or Sue, who can sew together all the seams that have been worn through. I, Annie Valentino, leave my Cheerleading uniform. I, Mary Vegliante, leave my Cheerleading uniform to anyone who admits she's my height. I, Martha Walsh, leave all my brown paper lunchbags to Mrs. Horn, in hope that she can find many a good use for them. I, Meryl Mlmont, leave this school by the front door with no second thoughts. I, Joe Zarbo, leave Marcia Lincoln to be left untouched by other dominant males. We, Andrea, Carole, Colleen, Debbie, and Sandy, leave for Bermuda. We, Annie, Cathy, Dawn, Karen, Mary, and Martha, gladly leave the orange marking pen to anyone who dares to be tardy in Mr. Schatzlein's homeroom. We, Joe Barulli, Jim Tyrrell, Ron DeMatties, Mark Piekar-ski, Paul Woytowich, Brian Carpenter, Mario Caruso, Dennis Dugan, John Dunham, Paul Bacon, Bob Liptak, Paul Appuzzo, leave our seats on the windowsill to anyone who is tough enough to fill them. We, les b6b6s, leave Miss Panagrossi after all these years. We, Carol Clement and Gail Norup, leave Mr. Nigro's Bookkeeping II class to anyone who can do better than we did. We, Valerie Cooper and Marsha Gusenburg, leave our ice blue satin gowns complete with silver sequins to Aunt Marge in hopes that she can find a better use for them, (i.e., dust cloths, pot holders, drop cloths.) They have 1001 uses! We, Dennis Dietrich and Ken McCrea, leave the keys to rooms 319, 324, 338, and 1038 of the Biltmore Hotel to next year's SACHEM staff. We, Ella and Col, leave to the 1971 Cheerleading squad a crooked star and flat butterflies. We, female members of the Class of '71, leave behind the tradition of the yellow gymsuit, as we are the last class to wear it. We, Noreen Grady, Mary Silengo, and Kathy Connell, leave our tremendous bull-throwing ability to any junior capable of getting away with as much as we did. Furthermore, we leave our places in Dairy Queen, McDonalds, Ho-Jo's, and Dunkin Donuts to any underclassman capable of hitting all four places as many times as we did in one school day. Finally we leave Arnaldo Scarffle III, Marticia Sniffle I, and Professor Flutesnoot to Tim. We, the history classes of Urban Problems, American History, and Social Psychology, return our dittos to Mrs. Flaharty and Mrs. Kuehn. We donate the notebooks, dittos, and other paraphernalia, which we have accumulated over four years, to the annual bonfire. We, Jim, John, Floyd, Kurt, Jake, Dave, Mike, Brian, Jim, Steve, Mark, Rich, Gerry and Bob leave the Housatonic League Championship and the words to the song Celebrate and When Irish Eyes are Smiling to the Class of 17 and North Haven High School. We, Jim Lyon and Jim Griffin of the Housatonic League Football Champions, leave Nick DeLucia and Rich Tozzo to act as captains of the kangaroo court. We, Suzanne Mangino and Denise Papa, leave homeroom to any early-rising underclassman who can make it on time. We, Cindy Marak and Dianne Spencer, leave room 228 so Mrs. Horn can eat her lunch in peace. We, seniors of the computer room, leave our drawers, cards, the collection of Playboys, and the IBM 1620 for any underclassmen unbalanced enough to find use for them. We, the students of Miss Batrow's Bio. II class, shall hereafter pile our fetal pigs on her doorstep. We, Terry, Jim, Laura, and Sandy, leave to Mrs. Luscomb our many talkative hours in her resource center, with the hope that Chuck Jensen will keep them alive. We, the Torch staff, leave Mr. Schatzlein hoping he will be able to regain his sanity; the custodians hoping they can make up for the lack of sleep; and to next year's Torch staff, our ripped McDonald's bags, a Purple Passion bottle, late night hours, and above all, Spitley. We, the editors of the 1971 SACHEM, leave to Miss Ba-trow, the Biltmore Hotel; to the custodians, room 002; to all future SACHEM staffs, a new filing cabinet; and to the 1972 SACHEM editors, a detailed map of Columbia University, one panic button, a box of used Kleenex, the ability to climb over the hall gate, and an empty bank account; and to ourselves we leave 42nd Street. Along the road that led to the publication of this yearbook we encountered many who advised and assisted us in our endeavor. Those of us who have traveled this road would like to thank all those contributing to the success of our journey. Among those to whom we extend our gratitude are: Miss Mary Batrow, SACHEM Advisor, whose surveillance and mediation with regard to all aspects of this book has evoked the SACHEM Editors' utmost admiration. Miss Jean Trescott, SACHEM Advisor, for her editing of all the literary material included in this book, and her assistance in layout work. Her will and determination aided us in the completion of this book. T. O'Toole and Sons, Inc., for the successful publication of another SACHEM. We also extend a special note of thanks to Mr. Jack Brown, whose experience, talent, and calm endurance contributed to the originality of this year's book. Creative Studio, Inc., especially Mr. Jerry DeLucia and Mr. John Petrullis, whose efficient coverage of all school events and many hours of personal attention have enriched the SACHEM's quality and distinction. Mrs. Joslyn and Mrs. Pahoda for the use of office materials, for their help in locating students, and their special attention to all SACHEM-oriented material. The administration and faculty, especially, Mr. Dominic Mascagna, our link in administrative matters, and Miss Marie Panagrossi for her assistance in matters pertinent to the Senior Class. Kahlil Gibran, author of The Prophet, copyright 1951, and Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. for permitting us to use the quotes appearing on the opening and divisional pages of this book. The advertisers who, as the prime financial support of the SACHEM, have once again made our publication possible. We, the SACHEM Editors, feel confident that we have produced a book worthy of the enterprising Class of 1971. This book, as any other literary work, must face the test of time which will determine its fate. If, when reviewing this book any number of years from now, we relive the memories and feelings established at N.H.H.S. then, and only then, may this book be marked as a success. But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over, and it is no longer dawn The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song. And if our hands should meet in another dream we shall build another tower in the sky.
