INIR. CHARLES T. ST. CLAIR Superintendent SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE To the members of the Class of 1958 we offer congratulations as you approach one of the memorable occasions of your lives. Graduation represents a goal for which you have been working ever since you first entered school some twelve years ago. Many times, twelve years from now, you will look back with pleasure and satisfaction upon the ceremonies of graduation. What makes these few days so important? Grad- uation is symbolic of knowledge, of maturity, of progress. This is indeed commencement - of man- hood and womanhood, of individual freedom and individual responsibility. This occasion marks clearly the time when you must begin to live independently with courage and self-reliance. These days are not like other days, but are unique in their meaning to you and to us. You have increased in wisdom, in strength, and in integrity in the security of home and school. Guard these traits well, foster them, nourish them, for you will need them constantly as you take your place as an adult in society. Although the future holds countless challenges and problems, you are well prepared. We expect great things from you and wish you continued success and good fortune! .F Mr. St. Clair greets Betty Gillson, student teacher MR. THOMAS A. AQUILA Principal PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE To us you are more than the Class of 1958. You are a group of important individuals. Each of you has made his own unique contribution to the heritage of North Haven High School. As scholars, athletes, musicians, student leaders, and in various other ways, you have enriched many of the fine traditions of our school. You have also created many new ones. The years spent at North Haven High School have been profitable for all of us. It has been our constant aim during your stay at North Haven High School to equip each of you with the skills, facts and mtitudes necessary for you to play intelligent roles in the adult society of our community and nation. Your achievements in all school projects have indicated to us that you are in- deed well-prepared academically, socially, and psy- chologically to play those roles. You have placed a challenge before all the stu- dents who follow by the high standards you have set in all your studies and activities. All of us appreciate your consistent willingness to offer your particular talents to the North Haven High School program. Wfe will always be concerned about you as in- dividuals. This is your school and will always be so. Do not forget us, as we can never forget you. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Congratulations on your achievements here at North Haven High School. As you leave to seek your place in society. we wish you a future complete with happiness and success. Some of you will continue your education as further preparation for your life work. Many of you will embark upon your careers immediately. Your future can hold much in store for you, no matter who you are or what you will be. Seek out and enjoy the treasures of the world - the fine literature of yesterday, today and tomorrow, the music of the composers, the masterpieces of the artists, the wonders of nature, and the warm regard of true and tried friendships. These treasures are yours to share and enpoy. They are as near to you as the public library, the concert hall, the record shop, the countryside, and the next door neighbors. Try to maintain a satisfactory balance between work, leisure, and aesthetic experiences. Do not permit minor set- backs to distort your vision of bigger or more worthy events to come. You have constituted a valuable segment of our school life these past few years. Through your efforts and contributions you have upheld the high regard accorded to North Haven High School. We hope that you will remember us and visit us from time to time. We shall note with pride your accomplishments and boast to all that you were in the graduating class of 1958. MR. LEVI G. TN-1 in ,. 4, A ,-wmdg, 1555, V FRESHMAN OFFICERS: Allan Hadley, President, Anne Harritk, Secretaryg Robert Emerson, Vice-Presi dentg Donald Olson, Treasurer. The big thing FRESHMAN YEAR was the most pompous Latin Night of all. Art White as Major Domo was the hit of the evening in his toga, mint-green T-shirt, and hunter green socks. Remember the wine which came out of Welch's cans, the slipping sheets, and the makeshift card- board sandals? Out of the barbarism of the pre-teenage, civilized life emerged first in the form of freshmen. In 1953, the year of the Davy Crockett hat, we entered the ninth grade, pleased, but not nearly as sophisticated as we are Q ?D now. Since a real high school class must have leaders, we enthusiastically elected odicers and an advisor, Mrs. Arra. 5 if i SOPHOMORE OFFICERS: Anne Harrick, President, Nick Ferrara, Roman Holiday: Major Domo leads a procession to Treasurer, Paul Bassett, Vice-President, Linda Lendroth, Secretary. swell the heart for heady of any Latin teacher As SOPHOMORES, under the direction of Mr. England, we got together with those penny crusading juniors and held our first big dance Mood Indigo. Silver tassels decorated the blue bids, and glittering stars and crepe paper decora tions hung from the ceiling of the gym, giving it an ethereal atmosphere, quite a change from our cafeteria dances. We had at last entered high school social life. In the schoolls first musical, Belle of the West, several members of our class made their debuts as chorus girls, snapping their garters and adding many more fans to their already large list of admirers. The cast party afterwards proved to be even more successful than the play I One of the highlights of our JUNIOR YEAR was the class ring. We broke tradition and created both friends and enemies when we decided on the new design, but when we hnally put the rings on our fingers, all criticism was drowned amid the many words of praise. Macbeth Trial: Out, out, brief chuckle . . .' junior year we made the Gettysburg gravestones shake with our memorable Civil War Day. Every member of the class participated, with astonishing results like Dunn's never-to-be-forgotten Charge, Mike Hart's three-month-old Lincoln beard, and that scene of old North Haven, Bassett and Marks C you old . . . II lj- JUNIOR OFFICERS: Peter Gibbons, Treasuretg john Roche, Vice-President, Anne Harrick, Secretary, Michael Melody, President. For the first time in his life Cot perhaps we should say deathj Macbeth got a fair trial, complete with witches costumed for real. After the opinion of the infamous Dr. Von Tolman and the stirring defense of john Palmer, the jury, underclassmen of course, impartially decided to shorten the trial and thereby lengthen their lunch period by acquitting the defendant. Civil War Day: Roger Munck, jack Jensen, Bob Smith, Bob Zelanakas, Robert Pernal, Larry Ballantyne. What y'all doin? 1 gwZ'im ' Of course the most important achieve- ment of the junior year is the driver's license. Our class linished driver education with only a minimum of scraped fenders and dented doors, but the nerves of our instructors were shattered and their hair a little gray. Teaboure Of Fashion 7 V! But the greatest triumph of the season came on Armistice Day when we brought East Haven to its knees. Infommlizy II, our December Senior Class Party, came as a welcome break in the routine of studies. Tom Cxypoliski, master of ceremonies, kept it a lively affair, leading the games and introducing the Four Notes and the Progressive Professors. With true Christmas spirit, Santa Claus Cavaliere gave a gift to every Senior. How did Ibn! moth- pick get in the way? The eve of the Seymour game we toured the town in a wandering pep rally, visiting such famous spots as the cannon, the Broadway rotary, Memori- al Field, the Rose Garden, and East Rock, where we made a sacrificial offer- ing to assure our victory. Decorating the showcases with Christmas merchandise from various stores, the salesmanship class brightened the halls with eye-catching arrangements. The judges had a hard job choosing the best window, but finally decided to give first prize to the men's clothing display by Louis Perrotti and Ronald VanDoren. Mr. and Mn. North fillike and Cathy! From the tryouts to the cast party, our Senior Play was a conspicuous success. We were off to a good start when many seniors tried out, and everyone was so talented that a fine cast was chosen. Mrs. Dorsi and her hardworking assist- ant, Claudia Levin, directed the inspiring re- hearsals and the flawless C ? J performance. Cathy Jennings, our leading lady, picked the night of the worst snowstorm in twenty years to have her quiet riot of a cast party way out in Northford. STUDENT COUNCIL The meeting was called to order by the President Henry Sargent at 2:20 p. m. The following business was discussed: The exciting bonfire held before the Branford football game was the first in the history of North Haven High. An extensive get wood campaign resulted in a mountain of crates on the athletic field. XY'hile the fire blazed, the cheerleaders led the spectators in songs and cheers, and a dummy of Branfords star football player was burned in efiigy. In November the annual Harley! Hop was presented. Under co,- chairmen Jeanne Horvath and Kathy Puester it became one of the most successful dances ever held. During the respective seasons, booster pins with miniature foot- balls and basketballs were sold. In january the very successful Juke Box Hop, under the chairmanship of Bill Lanouette, was held. Chuck Brinkman's Saturday night radio program was broadcast directly from the school. Bands and singing groups performed over the air and for the large enthusiastic audience in the gym. The tremendous profit received will be used to pay some of next year's expenses. A more concise edition of the 1958-1959 Student Handbook, Tomtzlaazvk, has been com- piled and will be printed for distribution in the fall. The Student Council revised the school Con- stitution and the Extra-curricular Point System. An informative School Dance booklet con- taining helpful hints on dress and manners, was compiled and published under Student Council supervision. There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m. Respectfully submitted Patricia Redding, Secretary WORK l TOMAHAVVK STAFF: K. Buxton, M. King, L, Lipsher, Horvath Editor. After literally burning the midnight oil, which we vowed we wouldn't do because we were going to BE ORGANIZED, and after calling people at all hours of the day and night to help us, we heaved a sigh, gathered the pieces together and sent the treasure off to press. Our trials were made easier by Kate Buxton and Peter Gibbons, the scavengers who exhumed the pictorial records of our notorious past, Allan Hadley and Judy Heinle, the pair who scanned the scores, Nancy Lucas, the girl with the well-worn soles who was responsible for the Senior mug shots, Judy Chapman, our resourceful biographer with the quotable quotes, Linda Lendroth, the active girl with the notable notes, joan Fontaine, our cover girl, Bill Lanouette and his fabulous friends who foresaw the future, June Betta, the typist who shortened many a fingernail for our cause, Sandy Lade, the literary lass with the litter of labelsg Patty Redding, the girl who gets around, Larry Lipsher, our fabulous financier, and Barbara Davies, an Ad man's dream. Being the most intelligent and resourceful group in the school, we stand confident in the knowledge that we will, at long last, receive the inestimable praise that we so rightfully deserve. 92 w 'FL 415 Fife thi! under 'F' for Fomgrapbf' ol-1 S .M Q'.:cii yu s ,4.a?55- 2 Q Q. 4. The team, captained by Charles Aftosmis and under the able guidance of Coach Mike Vanacore, ended up in fourth place in the Housatonic League. The squad split its league games 6-6 but took 4-5 in non- league encounters, including two wins over class A teams, Hamden and Wfilbur Cross. As with any team, the pitching was the Indians' key to success. However, the mound staff had to do a yeoman-like job in order to carry their weak teammates to victory. Bill Marks, captain of this year's team, led the pitchers with a 5-3 record, including a no hitter against the league champions, Lyman Hall. North Haven's hitting left a great deal to be desired, as the team average was a feeble .206 with no one able to hit over the .500 mark. Bill Marks led the team with a .263 average and with 12 runs batted in. Paul Anton was next with .227. 'XXVA -'wb-1 Barrel! in a bot comer.
