Wildcat Have A New Look On any day, the current trends of the year can easily be found in a crowded North Gaston hallway. Walking to class, fashion conscious students can be seen wearing the latest styles. The most common sight is jeans ranging from plain blues to colorful florals, paisleys, stripes, and plaids. Stirup pants are also a popular newcomer to the fashion scene. Topping these off are shaker sweaters and big shirts These students are wearing just a few of the limitless styles available in jeans. that are a favorite for adding bright contrast. Guess and Swatch watches keep many students on time as they msh to classes. Another popular accessory is rubber and plastic bracelets worn by many girls. The hairstyles of many North Gaston students also have a new look with rat-tails or partially bleached hair. It is clear to see, as styles continue to change, North Gaston students will always have a new look. 18 I Student Life Shoes can be found in all shapes and colors on North Gaston's students. Kathryn Boyd is unaware of the camera as she serves a customer in a check-out lane at Winn Dixie of Dallas. va Working Many of our students are just as the title implies . . . Working Wildcats. During the day they attend school from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. leaving afterwards to occupy their time for six or more hours at some type of occupation. Keeping a pan-time job while attending school full time requires great responsibility. Perfection must be produced in both work and school. When junior Charles Thornburg was asked if he felt pressured while trying to provide quality work in two totally different areas he replied, It's hard. Work can lower your grade average because you don't have time to study. Melissa Williams, who is also a junior and works at Hanna's Cafeteria in Gastonia, felt differently. No, I don't feel pressured, she stated, If I did, I would quit my job. When we are put into new situations and must adjusts, the change can be difficult. Sophomores can agree with this. Being a sophomore in a new atmosphere with dif- ferent surroundings is a change that takes a considerable amount of adjusting. Two of North Gaston's sophomores hold a part-time job. For these two young men it's double trouble. It's their first year in high school and in the work force. As anyone would, they want to make a good first impression in both areas. When asked if they were adjusting to both situations. Greg Comer, who is em- ployed by Long Creek Fish Camp of Dallas. replied, Most of the time I feel pressured because it's a load. It's also a challenge. I don't have much time for leisure between homework and work. Jeff Bell, who works several odd jobs in Gastonia, in contrast said, Wildcats Yes it's easy because most of the people here at school help you out. I really don't feel pressured in any wayf' By the time you're a senior the combina- tion of school and work has become routine. A balance between the two has been es- tablished and a sure reason for working has become prevalent. Senior Renee Emory has worked for a year and a half now at the A8cP of west Gastonia and states, ' 'I enjoy meeting new people and talking with them. I've developed responsibility through learning how to manage the money that I eam. The routine of work has become more fun. Karen Anthony, who is employed by D'Lites of Gastonia and is also a senior, says that work is all right and that it has definitely helped her become more responsible as a per- son. Work can be rewarding, but also hindering as stated by others earlier. Homework seems to be interferred with the most. As one knows, if homework is not completed on a daily basis the student can not keep up with discussions and than likely fall Karen Anthony interferes with and be prepared for class comments and will more behind. When questioned replied, 'fYes, working homework and school activities. The work I do doesn't help me save for college because I don't make enough, so right now I'm working to have a good time with my own money in- stead of asking mom. One can see that work plays an important role in these students' lives. The balance and responsibility it brings about is difficult to manage, but somehow the strain is overcome so that perfection is brought about.
