ERVICE WITH A SMILE The VICA and DECA are service clubs for students in school work programs. The students in these two clubs have early release, meaning they leave school to eam a unit of credit for work experience. Although they do miss out on school activi- ties, the students don't seem to mind. Brett Carter stated, 'SI like being a member of DECA because I get out early and can go to work to make extra moneyf, VICA club member Lisa Hill added, 'GI signed up for VICA for the extra money and for the two credits. The VICA club does a lot more than most people know. They participated in the flag raising duties. They also helped the less fortu- nate children of our community at Christmas by sponsoring a toy drive. Students were asked to bring old and new toys to be dis- tributed. VICA club adviser, Mr. Benfield, stated, HI feel thatthe toy drive is important because it gets the kids involved in helping out in our community. Last year the VICA Club collected 500 toys to give away and used 200 dollars to buy new toys. For this good deed, the VICA club has received a plaque from the Gaston Community Action for the past three years. The club is very proud of this accomplishment and recognition. Along with the toy drive VICA has been of some service to us in other ways. They donated 50 dollars for the large plant in the main office and they helped to recover the fumiture in the library by donating money. Also, VICA buys a gift for an under- privileged child for the Student Council program each Christmas. Mr. Eller is the adviser of the DECA Club. The DECA Club has 35 members who also get early release because of jobs and receive two credits for this class. The DECA Club offers service to the school by running the school store each day so the students can get their needed supplies. Members of the club volunteer to work and they altemate each week. The club does not make a profit from the store. All the money goes to the school. DECA also helps out in the school by being in charge of the barbeque delivery each year. Mr. Eller and the members of DECA are out all day distributing and delivering barbeque for our school-wide sale. 176 X Clubs DECA Club members take a break from working in the school store.
