tep Ahead gf the excc Rest The girls' track team started out at an all out sprint in their first meet as they blew away Hunter Huss and Ashbrook and cruised to an easy non-conference victory. Although the conference proved a little tougher, the girls handled it fairly well as they finished 21-4 overall and finished first in the conference along with winning the conference meet. In the conference meet, they had a team score of 129 and their closest competitor, Chase, was l7V2 points behind with a score of lllVz. This score proved just how much talent the girls had. Mary Beth Best said, A 'We had a lot of talent and we used it wisely, by doing this we achieved our goals that we set at the begin- ning of the season. One young lady achieved her goals along with a few more goals. Ruby Thompson, a shot putter and discus thrower, won the con- ference, sectionals and regionals in the shot put. After this she went on to the state. Ruby stated, lt's really very exciting to be representing North Gaston like this. Exciting is exactly how the girls' track season should be described as they also sent their relay team to the sectionals where they did very well. Doing well in anything takes hard work and dedication. The girls proved that it really does work in the long run. Tenni Teams Hit the Court The girls' tennis team had their first win- ning season this year, with a conference record of 4-3, and an overall record of 6-6. They had several outstanding players, includ- ing Jennifer Barkley and Lisa Robinson who made all-conference. The girls' team is also looking forward to a promising future. We had our first winning season and I'm proud of that, but next year and the years following they should have even more talent and victo- ries, stated Dawn Bohanan who was the only senior on the team this year, therefore, the 13 retuming players should be back and swinging for next year. The boy's tennis team had a disappointing season finishing 2-9 overall, but they are looking forward to a strong season next year. t'The team was very young, we played with spirit, but we need time to improvef' stated junior Gene Crowley. The team's number one and two players, Emest Murray and Tony Atkins, were both freshman and are the building blocks for the next season. -fir .. - Lisa Robinson concentrates on her retum. 138 X Sports ,, Leslie Taylor strokes through her forehand, Jennifer Barkley retums a deep shot. f mfg '. wif I I 4 a-lrrtvz' ,Uv . . . vi I 1 ,Q iMV,W'5,w .L 1, ',, ',.
