Get Un Track The boys track team had a good season compared to the last few years. There were many students who went out for the first time causing the team to be really inexperienced. All of the athletes were willing to work for improvement under the direction of Coach Dixon and Coach Best. The team's strongest events were in the field events and distance running. Ray Boyce tied the school record in the high jump. Brian Clemmer, .in the 800m run and Paul Wilkinson in the shot put both set new school records. Several members went on to the sectionals in Charlotte but no one advanced to the regionals. The season did end on a good note when the team finished 7th in the conference meet. The conference meet was held at North Gaston which now has one of the best track facilities in the county. Boyd Beasley stated, I'm really proud to have participated in track this year. lt was great having the new track. Gary Benton, who also ran track this year for the first time at North Gaston commented, It's different from junior high. Here we throw a heavier shot put but it was a fun season. Brian Clemmer. Scott Mathis, David Jones and other team members stretch out before the meet. Scott Mathis, Kenneth Costner, Eugene Clemmer and Alex Freestone huddle together during the two mile run. tep Ahead gf the excc Rest The girls' track team started out at an all out sprint in their first meet as they blew away Hunter Huss and Ashbrook and cruised to an easy non-conference victory. Although the conference proved a little tougher, the girls handled it fairly well as they finished 21-4 overall and finished first in the conference along with winning the conference meet. In the conference meet, they had a team score of 129 and their closest competitor, Chase, was l7V2 points behind with a score of lllVz. This score proved just how much talent the girls had. Mary Beth Best said, A 'We had a lot of talent and we used it wisely, by doing this we achieved our goals that we set at the begin- ning of the season. One young lady achieved her goals along with a few more goals. Ruby Thompson, a shot putter and discus thrower, won the con- ference, sectionals and regionals in the shot put. After this she went on to the state. Ruby stated, lt's really very exciting to be representing North Gaston like this. Exciting is exactly how the girls' track season should be described as they also sent their relay team to the sectionals where they did very well. Doing well in anything takes hard work and dedication. The girls proved that it really does work in the long run. Ruby Thompson practices shot, she took second in the state, Mary Beth Best practices off the track as well as on, she wiv 'ma 9 My H - - A, W .-, , K , 1 . 1 1 X. 5 , un k at il 'txy ,.
