Itis Working A new disciplinary punishment was adopted into our school rules to try to cut down on absences caused by the original out of school suspension. In School Suspension QISSJ is its name. The majority of the students who have been in ISS were put in there for ex- cessive tardies, but ISS is also used as punishment for fighting, sleeping in class, and other disturbances students make. While in ISS, the students are given assignments by their teachers to keep them busy. Often they are given more work than the regular classes. This is to ensure that a student will not fall far be hind in their studies during their punishment. They are given no breaks and are under supervision the entire time. Isolation is the main reason ISS is working, according to Mrs. Rust. In Mr. Costner's words, ISS has cut down on out of school suspension, although there have been many people who have gone to ISS for their second and third times. Mr. Carpenter stated, It's working for those who don't want to get into trouble? 106 X Faculty i I Obviously students in ISS dislike the confinement, all of them are coopera- tive and cause no problems. Since they find nothing to look forward to in ISS, the students realize they should make an effort to get to class on time and practice self discipline more often. Jeff Vemon said, It is like a prison but it sure keeps you from getting tardies. Mrs. Herndon added, It's workingf'
