GZIJJ? ji fycllcll Getting a Look Inside Government Many of us only read about government affairs in the newspaper or listen attentively to television and radio as the media briefs us on government projects at hand. We never real- ly get to look to see for ourselves what really takes place behind closed doors. If this is your dream then be envious of Pam Lepley and Carol Anderson who served as pages with the state government in Releigh this past school year. Both Pam and Carol were able to get a small view of the hurried hustle and bustle at our state capital. As a government page a student serves mainly as a gopher who delivers messages and needed materials from offices of the lawmakers to desired destinations. Not just anyone can fulfill this small but prestigiousjob. A student must be nominated by his history teacher and submit an application along with three references to the administration building at the capital. then endure the long wait for accep- tance. I waited so long that I began to wonder if they had even gotten my application, said Pam. I was a little shocked when I discovered I had been chosen and then I was happy. I was surprised. Carol stated, but it has been so long I didn't think I would get it, but I was when I did be- - cause it's a privilege. When Pam was asked if all the thrill and excitement would lead her to a career in govern- ment she replied. It may. I leamed a lot about government that I didn't know. I learned more in Raleigh that week than I would have in school. Carol stated No l'm not interested in govemment, Ijust felt this could give me some experience with the government and work- ing with its people. lt's some thing that I wanted to do and learned a lot from.
