' Only two years have come and gone since North Garland High School opened its doors, but, we have already begun to establish our own, personal characteristics. People no longer say, North Garland? Who are they? We have made our presence known to ev- eryone and we're not going to let them forget us -- But we're not through yet. We've got a lot to be proud of, however, we still have a great deal of growing to do. To make this a really first-rate school we all have to work together. The building blocks of any society are the individu- als that comprise it, but, if these blocks do not adhere to one another, the foun- dation will crumble, as will the society. Through the pages of this book we hope to give a true picture of the indi- viduals of our society, NGHS, and the school they have, and are, building. J. Mason Knox The quality of a school depends upon the faculty and students of that school. Here at North Garland, we have two faculty members who deserve recognition for their lasting devotion to making NG a first class school. They are two of the most important people in this school, and for many reasons: Both are well informed in the areas of student life. . . Both are honest with themselves and others Both are very sensitive to our problems . . . Both are always will- ing to work overtime in the interest of NG and its students . . . Both are willing to do what the maiority of the students want whenever possible, and Both are willing to explain to us their rea- sons when they can't do what we want. Therefore, the l973 MARAUDER would like to give special recogni- tion to: Mr. Gene Hudson and Miss Jill Shugart ww U!! ' ' 'WM M ,En ie? 11:1 ,,,' -ra i f -V 7 ..-ff, we sy 1 '7'3'3f'sYi 7. Just as there was an increase in student body, faculty, and the school itself, there was more importantly an increase in spirit and interest in school activities. With the increase in the Mam'selles and Band, North Garland's first half-time performance was only a portion of the greatest experience North Garland has ever known - the winning of our first varsity football game. mixEiRiimi5'iiiEi3Eioo1 - U U., X Ax i is l - Q a 0 The Muhs finally make fha! big sfep J-al, L. m E W7 e K ' ' JV iives of The pep rally. XM , E The following week, North Garland con- tinued their winning ways by defeating the Adamson Leopards, 7-6. The Raider defense seemed to be the contributing factor in the game. They held the Leopards to only one touchdown during the entire game, in the process causing six fumbles, four of which the Raiders recovered. The offense played equally well.' The win- ning score came as Billy Adams threw a 27 yard pass to Ken Buchheit for the score late in the third quarter. NG's winning streak came to an end as they were beaten by the Trinity Troians by a score of 26-O. As always, the Red and Black never gave up hope even though they could only manage seven first downs and T31 total yards. This disappointing defeat was the first of the season for the young Varsity team. North Garland had another disappointing week as they dropped one to the Gaines- ville Leopards. The Raiders' lone score came on a one yard leap by Tim Griffin capping a 51 yard drive in l5 plays. But the lead was short-lived as the Leop- ards came on strong with an 85 yard kick- off return for a TD. The Raiders tried to muster a comeback but could not overcome the powerful Leopards. Final score, 7-42. The following three games brought back bitter memories of last year as the Raiders went down to McKinney, Lewisville and South Grand Prairie. The McKinney Lions proved to be tough competition for the Raiders as they beat our team 5'l-7. The Lions, ranked sixth in the state, completely dominated the game in rushing and passing. They gained 405 yards passing while the Raiders only had l4. The Lions were not giving up anything to the Raiders. They scored 30 points in the first quarter while NG's offense could not get anything moving. However, the Raiders' fighting spirit still showed through as Billy Hooks ripped upfield on the kickoff return for a 40 yard runback. Two plays later Hooks did it again as he went 53 yards for the Raiders' lone touchdown. In the second halt the Lions scored 21 more points. 207 Q r SL QV Q W KJ IX E K EN w rx M G 36179 , Q .jg QQ7 Q w wk r r rr 45 X Vip! Coach Beavers talks over defensive strat- egy. the defense as they only let the Warri- ors score once. However, the Raider offense could not move against the stiff Warrior defense. With only three games to play, the mighty Raiders went into the home stretch determined to resume their win- ning ways. And they did. On a cold Saturday night, NG faced their arch-rivals, the Berkner Rams. The game started out slowly with both teams making mistakes, but neither team could capitalize on the mistakes of the other. North Garland drew first blood as Billy Hooks scored on a six yard run. But, mid-way through the third quarter, Berkner tied it up, 6-6. After a give-and-take battle for most of the final quarter, injured quarter- back Billy Adams came into the game to toss an eight yard pass to Steve Himmelreich for the score and the game. Billy Hooks tacked on the extra point, and the score was T3-6 with 39 seconds left in the game. Berkner fought hard to quickly regain the lead, but NG held firm to win. Final score, 13-6. Following the Berkner win, the Raid- ers faced the DeSoto Eagles in the most exciting game of the season. NG was at its finest. At first, things went had for North Garland as DeSoto scored six on the second play of the game. But NG fans soon rejoiced as Billy Hooks took the following kickoff 7l yards to the DeSoto 20 yard line. Three plays later, Billy Adams threw a pass to Steve Him- melreich to put the Raiders back in the game. After that, the Raiders really per- formed with brilliant defensive plays. DeSoto was crushed as they tried to get around linebacker Wayne Scruggs. After halftime, NG came out smokin'. Following a 41 yard kickoff return by Billy Hooks, Himmelreich ran 28 yards to score again. After point conversion the score was Billy Hooks tacked on another points with an eight yard plunge. The only score in the game came after Bonham fumbled a punt reception at its own 37 yard line. The Raiders moved to the one where Steve Himmelreich carried over for the lone touchdown of the game. Billy Hooks booted the extra point. ln statistics, Bonham out-did the Raiders in rushing with 150 yards to the Raiders' 107. The Raiders, however, were outstanding in pass- ing with 143 yards to Bonham's 33. A run up the middle. zz? sgfftzivf -my .f .1 X v K ,,.,W. To complement the outstanding shooting of Ricky Perry, Mark Miller, and Chuck Cantlon, Coach Leon Kennedy utilized the height and strength of Dale Gerner, Bill Hubbard, Neil Boston, and Terry Lawson to keep the team a con- stant district threat throughout the season. Uncanny agility, fine shooting, and flawless rebounding were char- acteristics of the Raider Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. Dedication and enthusiasm were evident throughout the entire season, but perhaps the most enthusiastic and dedicated men were Coach Ken- nedy and Coach Joe Garcia. They were certainly active on the bench giving instructions and setting up defenses. The highlight of the season was both a defensive and an offensive game, as the Berkner Rams invaded the NG gymnasium to attempt to knock-off the archri- val Raiders. This mid-season clash was important to both teams because they were both high in the standings. In the early moments of the game, the Rams lumped off to an 8-O lead, but the Raiders fought back to only a 15-13 deficit at the end of the first period. The tension mounted throughout the game. As the end of the fourth period neared, the Raiders and the Rams were deadlocked at 50-50. In a dramatic finish the Raiders brought the ball down court using as much time as possible. With iust seconds left, Mark Miller made a iump shot from the corner to end the game 50-52. The Raiders finished district play with a 6-6 record. Vw.
