The administration, faculty, the entire staff f all who so willingly have given their time and put forth endless effort -- have been the foundation upon which we have depended. It is from their example, their eagerness and sincerity to promote our growth into more mature personalities, distinct and self-reliant, from their sharing and participating in activities with us - from such things as these has the name 'of North Eugene High School risen in respect and greatness. Our tribute, although it is well-worn and can be only a token of what we feel, is meant very deeply. Thank you all . . . for everything . . . fromfevery one of us. CHOOL BCARD X 34' Xxx Mr. Lee Bishop, Dr. Lcc Stauffer, Mrs. Sally Stafford, Mr. Richard Miller, and Mr. Verne Hoffman. The students of Eugene would like to extend their thanks to the School Board. Each member of this five member group is elected for a term of Five years by the people of the school district to carry out a most difhcult task f conducting the business and establish- ing the policies within which the administration may operate the schools. These non-paid individuals who so generously donate their time, effort, and considera- tion toward the betterment of the school district and the community, Do, indeed, deserve our sincere ap- preciation. Outstanding achievements in academic, as well as extra-curricular activities have highlighted the year. The list of awards and honors attest to this. Likewise, our tradition are establishing themselves on the basis of their own value. Certain events and activities have become an integral part of our schedule. Our students have grown with the school. This year was marked by increased participation by many students in the daily routine of the school. Mature judgement was displayed in our many elections and group choices. Primarily responsible for our student leadership was our Senior Class. So, in farewell, may we say, Thanks for a wonderful year and Goodbye, Good Luck, and God Bless You to the class of '6l. Sincerely, to af Mr Zollinger Dean of Boys vc mm? fm W i MRS. I am one of the lucky ones chosen to represent my country, Germany. I am lucky indeed: because I came to the United States, which is the most interesting and most beautiful country in the world: be- cause I came to Oregon. a state full of surprise and differ- ences in its geography and climate: and because I came to North Eugene High School. which has given me a wonderful example of an American high school with friendly relation- ships between teachers and students, with much eagerness for knowledge and still great fun. and with a wonderful sense of school spirit. It is not only to the school that I owe such marvelous experiences. it is to my American family - who made their house my second home. to my community, and to everyone I have met. I am grateful for being able to spend this exciting year here in these United States, and I will try to share with my countrymen all the new experiences and make known to them what an openminded. interesting, friendly. and likeable sort of people you Americans are. ,ff 53 in allen ihrcn Unternehmungcn. -mana.. fe, A tg .Q Q ittt M, 5 5 3 E Q elm... it M.. W'ith a treasury of 9533.00 we immediately launched a money raising program. Our Hrst project was that of sponsoring the Halloween dance, NWhich l'Vitch? By having coke parties, doughnut, baked foods, and ice cream salesg a talent assembly. and various other activities, we came in second in the race to support a foreign student. Nearly all of our efforts, however, have been directed toward our most important goal g giving the best junior- senior prom ever to be at North. To finance the evening in the mystical village of g'Brigadoon,'5 we initiated the sale of school sweatshirts and basketball score sheets. To per- fectly end the year, we are planning some event, where the class as a whole may have a grand Finale to their jun- ior year at North Eugene. INC: Steve Rogers. Laura Comstock. At the beginning of the year we planned projects to raise money for our treasury. These have been followed through during the year. VVe entered the foreign exchange student drive and were pleased with the amount of money that we raised. We have several pro- jects planned for spring to acquire money for next year. Altogether the Sophomore year has been one of learning. We feel now that we are adequately equipped to undertake the large tasks that will face us next year. I '- E Y Years Ago was the dramatic production of the year presented by North Eugene. The play, which was written by Ruth Gordon, was presented in the auditorium on November 17 and 18. It con- cerns a 16 year old girl named Betty, who wanted to become an actress. Her father thought it to be the worst possible thing a person could do and he would not even let her read a theater magazine. Posters, slogans and speeches all helped to enliven the campaign days. Several changes this year in election and voting procedures added to the nor- mal hubbub of elections. Candidates ran by petition and voting was done by voluntary Australian ballot. All campaigns were held simultaneously. Many witty, colorful posters inaugurated election week, followed by the hand- ing out of vote-getting gimmicks and speeches. The best North Eugene could hope for would have been a play- off for the second tournament position. That depended on three games. Roseburg must beat Marshiield and the Highlanders must win their final games with Marshfield and Willamette. South Eugene could have caused a three team playoff. Mel Krause said that it was the best balanced rebound- ing of the season. In the iirst six minutes the Bulldogs lead the Highlanders by a score of 10-1. Jim Kraus gave North Eugene the first field goal. The Highland- ers didn't take the lead until the early part of the sec- ond half. When we got it we kept it. With 3:19 left, the score was 38-36 in favor of North Eugene. Ron Johnson drove for a layin which was made up for by W7ayne Kersey of North Bend with 1 C26 left. W'ith 18 seconds Johnson sank two free throws to reassure the victory. 154 Une win - One loss North Eugeneas Highlanders avenged an earlier de- feat by visiting North Salem, whipping the Vikings 57-4-5 Tuesday night in the last non-league en- counter. Earlier in the year, North Salem had edged the High- landers 47-46 on the Viking home court. The Highlanders, coach Mel Krause whose squad now has a four win, two loss record, in summing up the tilt, said 'Lat least we are consistent, we keep mak- ing the same mistakesfi First quarter play, which ended, 16-15 Highlanders, was a battle between Loy, with an 11 point effort, and a balanced North Eugene attack. Third period found the Highlanders ahead 38-31, Len Bamford and Pat Loy, had a dual in the final period, Bamford's play making and fine shooting led the Highlanders to victory. Don Cloutier's two free throw successes in the final 19 seconds of play gave Springfield a 49f48 victory over North Eu- gene in a District 5-A-1 League basketball encounter at Springfield. The contest, close from the start to finish, went to the Millers via a superior defense. Springfieldfs tight diamond zone kept the North Eu- gene marksmen from getting intimately acquainted with the basket. Len Bamford was singularly suc- cessful. He scored 14 points in all, several of his ef- forts coming on long one-hand set shots. The score was tied 12 times during the tilt. Springheld won 49-48. BILL CAMPBELL was selected to be a member of the district 5A1 Basketball Team, along with two members from South. He also received a trophy for being the most outstanding player for North in the 1960-1961 season and he was team captain. He also played quarterback on the football team. He played forward on the basketball team for three years. Bill plans to attend Linfield College next year. One Win - One Loss North Eugene took a 77f45 District 5-A-1 league bas- ketball win to stay in the running for a tournament berth. The Highlanders First unit built a 22-10 hrst quarter lead and worked it up to a 38-20 by the half. Bill Campbell and Jim Kraus led the rally onslaught. Campbell hit for 12 and Kraus for 10. Thomas was high man for North. North had a very fine average from the gift line with 1726. North Eugene dominated the re- bound department too, with 45 to 18 for the Cottage Grove Lions. Roseburg remained on top of the heap all along after defeating North 65-55. This loss put North in a fourth place tie with North Bend. Roseburg jumped into the lead 7v2. Then Campbell and Franz hit for North to put North ahead 8-7. The Indian's Jim Jarvis hit four Held goals to put the host team ahead 33-27 at halftime. The closest the High- landers could get in the last five minutes was eight points at 61-53. Jim Jarvis finished the game with 23 points and John Franz was second with 19. 155 North downs South Bill Campbell scored the winning points for North Eugene with just 12 seconds left to play against the South Eugene Axe- men. The win put the Highland- ers back into the tournament picture. Campbell scored after Axeman guard Don DuShane had placed South ahead 21 seconds earlier with two free throws. The win put North just two games away from second place in the battle for the two state tourn- ament berths. Krause turned to the zone defense late in the third period and the Axemen got only two Held goals the rest of the game. Krause used the zone defense be- cause it kept South Eugene from getting close shots and it also killed time. Earlier in the game the Axemen, three times, picked up five point leads, but the Highlanders fought back with success. Two Hlins 4 One Lose North Eugene extracted a 76-47 District 5-A-1 basket- ball decision from the Thurston Colts. North Eugene forged an 11-0 lead in the opening minutes before Thurstonfs Bob blorgensonis foul success, North Eugene kept the Colts at long range through a greater part of the game. John Franz led the Highland- ers with 23 points, his most picturesque weapon was a rifle-like right hand hook, Ron Johnson added 11 points for the winners. Fred Willis was top man for the Colts getting 30 of their 47 points. South Eugene never before beaten in basketball by the Highlanders led only brieHy in a slow first quarter. In the second quarter North increased the lead to 24-17 at halftime. a scoring spurt led by Campbell gave the Highlanders a 33-32 lead midway in the third quarter. During the fourth quarter North Eugeneis lead faded to 42-40. Blair and Tobey tied it up in the final sec- onds. Campbell took the tip starting the overtime and drove in for a solo shot, only to have Bo Blair tie it up at 46-all moments later. North Eugene then stalled for 2M minutes. And it paid off with Franzls winning bas- ket. Campbell was top man with l7, Franz added 12 for the winners. North lost three games by a total of 5 points. Saturday was another close game with North losing 52-50 to the North Bend Bulldogs. The Bulldogs led for most of the game. North came from 8 points behind to make it a seesaw battle. The game was tied several times and the lead changed 7 times in 4 minutes during the fourth quarter. Campbell and Franz led the Highlanders with 16 points each. 15 One Win - One Loss North Eugene's Highlanders avenged an earlier defeat by visiting North Salem, whipping the Vikings 57f45 in the last non-league encounter. It was the end and the beginning for the class of '61, who left North Eugene, their alma mater, with the challenge Climb Every Mountain. So many experiences can be looked back upon over the three years we seniors have spent here. Moments of greatness, some trials, some failures have served as the touch-stones for our future. This graduating class has shown initiative, it has born many capable and diligent leaders. We truly have been one in the sence of unity and have worked not alone but to- gether at attain our aims. During Senior Week many of these thoughts of the past were looked upon again and pondered over in the minds of all they had reached. Baccalaureate, Senior Breakfast, the assembly and, Hnally, gradua- tion night became reality and then faded, as they must, into memory. We left, sad and regretful that we must leave, but also we left behind a part of us - our achievements -- for our successors to aspire to and upon which to build. Climb every mountain we shall and, having faith and love, we know, as we go our separate pathways, we will always remember thee! 'va R6 -Z xx, Q 0 -PK . -Nl ,f w, H - f ,gf ,.,-3w,,i, At last the long awaited night arrived. The Class of ,61 was ready to graduate. A new precedent was set this year. We had three of our own students speak to us. The graduates entered the auditorium together for the last time. 1 K'Climb Every Mountain, the class motto was presented by the A'Cap- pella Choir. Red and Silver were the class colors, with the class flower being red and white carnations. Mr. Hendrickson handed out the diplo- mas with a word of congratuations for everyone. i is iiii :iii ' Aii' And now the chairs are empty - but 'J-5E L wev' -C -:YN Vt hrtliliff i ' Q I ' ' , ' ' .swf:gf4P2'i.S1r'r- N-1 V4.9 5 I., 5379: Qi remaining forever are fond memories agua t iiiii 7 M972 of and for the Class of 1961, www t Q PM smtp ., 2 gg, yy W g,,,mvaQwfAQ! risk 5 Mufti, I li Q-qf'i1?jj'i8?X!iMiiliQ .1.f f ,ggrigzvaiwf f' t Nah, gi ,fi 4 3, '1' ' 4 Q i ' -'FAAAQ 'P 'nj I W .t -tiwm i We-minute 1- t nigh ' ,i .,,gf5,g!Sli2',Qi',: ,, f7,,y1gz3?3w 5. t X ..
