When the idea of having an exchange student was tlrst formulated, little did anyone realize that North could get anyone who would ht in so well with the academic and social atmos- phere. North High's foreign student, Harry Garnett, was born in Ellon, Scotland in April, l942. His family moved quite a bit after the war, but eventually settled down in Newcastle, England. In l953, Harry enrolled in Dame Allans Boys' School and stayed there until the time of his coming to North but he will return to hnish his last year there. At Dame Allans School he played rugby and cricket plus participating in track and cross country, Harry's fifteen year old sister attends the girls' section of the same school. His mother teaches at a local grade school and his fa- ther is a sales supervisor for a firm which makes everything from mustard to orange drinks. Harry has been a scout for many years and he intends to major in History or Geography in college. Harry Garnett will long be remembered by the class of '60 for bringing closer to them the interna- tional affairs of the day. 1 it 'K N, 4 .v . 4. H Q 10 f .. Q, . This year Print and Cord Week came to North on the 4th of April. It was as usual a big success to everyone. There were no special days this year except, everyday, when everyone could show oft their new duds. Campaign week, this year, was one not soon to be forgotten. The candidates, chosen by the iunior home rooms, were selected for their scholastic and leadership ability. Primary elections were held, resulting in selecting two candidates for each office. They were, President, Gale Roid and Jim Ottosen, Vice President, Randy Boyer and Pat Helfrich, Secretary, Belva Richins and Donna Evans, Treasurer, Bruce Ben- son and Mike Rear, Historian, Alette Appel an-d Mary Blackford. The posters were excellent this year, showing real talent and'a lot of hard work. Many new ideas were used, everything from campaign bands, parading through the halls, to soapbox speeches. The candidates made their final showing at an assembly Thursday, with elections bein-g Friday. The results were as follows, President, Gale Roid, Vice Presi- dent, Randy Boyer, Secretary, Belva Richins, Treasurer, Bruce Benson, Historian, Alette Appel. In the next ball game, North dropped a tight one to North Salem's Vikings on their floor 49-47. Viking forward Pat Loy was the deciding factor as he scored 22 points and collected 20 rebounds. Mansell was high for North with 11. Next North traveled to Beaverton where they rolled over the Beaverton Beavers by a 63-48 count. The Highlanders, led by Doug Olsen and Ed Mansell, poured in 22 points in the hrst quarter for a lead they never lost. Olsen had 17 points while Man- sell had 10 points and 14 rebounds. Sweet revenge was obtained by the High- landers in the next game as they topped North Salem by o 37-35 score in double overtime. With only one second remaining, Bob Bruns scored from 25 feet out to tie the game. Neither team scored in the first overtime but after only 42 seconds in the sudden death overtime, Captain Ed Mansell scored on a lay-in to give North the victory. Four Victories North started slowly but came on strong in the sec- ond quarter behind the outside shooting of Mike Hiatt and the inside work of Ed Mansell for a 28-24 half-time lead. After a close third quarter North broke loose for 21 points in the final stanza for a 64-52 victory. Mansell and Hiatt were high for North with 17 and 14 points respectively. Once again it was the big quarter that provided the victory for North. This time it was 22 points in the second quarter that gave North a 39-25 half-time lead, over Junction City's Tigers. The Highlanders held on in the second half for a 55-44 victory. Cen- ter Lynn Garner and forward Ed Mansell led North with 15 and 14 points. North Eugene's Highlanders hit a blistering .888 shooting percentage in the Hrst quarter to give North a 16-5 lead over Sweet Home. By half time they had upped it to a 26-13 margin. The Huskies came back strong in the second half and with only 1 minute to go it was 44-41, North. However, two tree throws by Royd Cousey Faust with tive seconds to go gave North a 46-41 victory. ' J 1 North Eugene vs. Marshfield Marshfield's unbeaten Pirates were challenged for most of the three quarters by the Highland- ers before pulling it out 47-43. Accurate marksmanship by forward Mike Hiatt and guard Bob Bruns, who had I4 points be- tween them in the first half, gave North a nar- row 2l-2O half time over the top-ranked Pi- rates. After dropping behind 37-25 late in the third stanza the Highlanders came on strong in the fourth quarter to make it close. High for North Eugene was Bruns with l3 points, following him was Hiatt with ll points. North vs. South The Axmen of South Eugene used patient, wait-and-see tactics, to de- feat the North Highlanders 48-53. Although North led only twice, 2-O on Lynn Garner's iump shot and 3-2 on Garner's free-throw, but the decision was undecided un- til the final moments. South's wait- ing tactics began at the beginning of the third period with their lead cut to 22-2l. From there, South controlled the ball and took only good shots from then on. Their lead was between six and ten points throughout the final stanza, but the Highlanders refused to fold. Bo Blair, Sandy Nosler, and Dave Tobey lecl the South's scoring with l2, ll, and lO points respectively. Ed Mansell led the Highlander at- tack with 9 points. Both teams com- bined for only twenty-five field goals in the low-scoring, hard- fought contest. North vs. Springfield The second meeting between the Springheld Millers and our own Highlanders took place in the North Eugene High gym, and it was a thriller. ln an overtime period the Millers won 52-48. But to attain victory, the Millers had to break a good zone ae- fense by the Highlanders. Springfield led olmost throughout the game, but never by more than eight points. On Saturday North Eugene traveled to North Bend and ran into the Bulldogs. The result was a 63-48 victory for North Bend. The Highlanders stayed with the taller bulldogs for mos' of the first half. The height dfierence began to shew in the third period and the Bulldogs won going away. The win was a must for North Bend who were in the heat of the race for the tournament.
