The Debate Club was very busy this year raising money tor trips - then actually taking the trip, In December an invitational match was held at Forest Grove, All beginners in speech and debate were sent there for ex- perience. Then in March a tournament was held at Linheld. The teams were experienced and varsity debaters. Competi- tion was stitt. This year the district tournament was held at North Eugene. The Neopolymaths were organized for students interested in reading and discussing well known literature. Olticers this year were: President, Sandy Coleman, Vice-President, Ed Stautter, and Secretary-Treasurer, Sandy Barnett. The advisor is Mr, Burgess. Some ot their activities this year were discussions on readings such as The Tempest by William Shakespeare, Com- munist Manifesto, and the Declaration ot Independence. They attended a play at the University of Oregon and a movie at the Mayflower Theater, They held a barbecue in the spring, All in all they have had a very worthwhile year, 17 -'Y ,.- 4 :XX . Yd'? F. T. A. The Future Teachers of America, as the name implies, are composed of people who plan on becoming teachers. The purpose of the FTA, is to explore the held of teach- ing and to help each member hhd the field most suited to her. lt is also for people who may have doubts about becoming a teacher, for here they can look into it and find out if it really is the career for them. This year not much has been done except to become organized and elect otticers. These officers are: President, Carol Gold- hammer, Vice President, Diane Jensen, Secretary, Bar- bara Zipf, and Treasurer, Betty Hanson. Next year the club plans to accomplish a great deal. They will secure information on teaching opportunities and qualifications, information on what teaching is like, teacher education, and plans for college. Another goal is to acquire an understanding of the history, goals, and ideals of the teaching profession. This can be accom- plished by reading materials, seeing films, and entertain- ing guest speakers, They also would like to visit a campus in Oregon to see the lives and classes of many other potential teachers, There are many other activities for learning about teaching and just having fun in which they hope to participate.
