CHESS CLUB The Chess Club was organized to inspire knowledge of chess playing and to promote interest in the game. The club consists of fourteen members with Mr. Hall as faculty advisor. Raymond Ressler was elected as President, Mark Beymer as Vice-President, and Ken Johnson as Secretary-Treasurer. The members meet every other Thursday evening. The emphasis in these meetings has mainly been on skill, al though a tournament was held with South Eugene High School in which the score was tied. An informal activity of some of the members has been playing chess during the lunch hcur in the cafeteria. FRONT ROW: Ross Frye, Mike Strayer, Doug Appel. DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club was not too active this year but they are ready for a big year in '58 and '59, With the help of the Pep Club the Drama Club sponsored the February dance, Cupid's Holiday. lt was a date, semi-formal dance. The officers for this year were only temporary as there was not much business for them to do. Charles Shoup was the acting President and Vonnie Beckos acted as Secretary. Mrs. Havey is the faculty advisor for the club. The purpose of the Drama Club is to promote an interest in dramatics, not only in acting, but with all parts of stage activities. They will also be working with make -up and sets. Membership in the Drama Club is open to any student in- terested in dramatics and willing to perform in front of the club. Applicants must prepare a short demonstration of their talents, such as a reading, skit, pantomime, or song, and be voted in by a two-thirds majority of the club's membership. 36
