OLIVE PORTER For twentyfeight years Mrs. Porter was one of the outstanding teachers of North Division High School, joining the faculty here in 1922. As a teacher of English and history, Mrs. Porter upheld high standards of accomplishment. She was a friend of her studentsg and, as such she was always ready to encourage them in their scholar' ship and to help them in their personal problems. Many of them kept in touch with her long after their graduation. In addition to her teaching, Mrs. Porter took an active part in extracurricular activities. She was a faculty adviser for the Tattler, the annual yearbook, for many yearsg a member of the Scholarship Committee which checks on the qualifications of honor studentsg and a member of the committee on the revision of school rules. Her many friends among both the faculty and students miss her daily help and inspiration but wish her years of enjoyment of the leisure that lies ahead. 0 ma gzanore loiering MISS ELEANORE SPIERING For many years North Division has been fortunate to number on its faculty a teacher, excellent I1Ot only in the field of English but also in the performance of duties beyond the scope of the classroom. As a member of the Guidance Department, as Chief Girls' Counsellor under Mr. Weriier, and as Dean of Girls under Mr. Micthalak she wielded strong influence and accomplished much. lt was she who inaugurated and systematized the keeping of detailed student records. She helped to prepare the guidance program manual. Through her understanding of individual needs and capacities she was able by tactful, patient, and persistent effort to lead the student in the right direction. Under her sponsorship student government was revived in 1939 and a new constitution written. To her efforts in the Writers' Club many a student ascribes his success in writing and in leadership. In everything she set a high standard of conduct and achievement. Honesty of purpose and fearlessness of expression consistently characterized her work. To Miss Spiering go our best wishes for happiness, May she enjoy many years of richly deserved leisure. wwf IRTIHI. DIVISION 1. FACULTY 5. ACTIVITIES Z. CLASSES ll. BRANDEL Guidance Direrfnr GUIDANCE Fourffourths for North is specifically the theme of this TATTLER yearbook for 1951. Howf ever, that spirit dominates every year --f always fthe constant interest manifested in the Personnel and the Educational Services that reach out to assist each and every student here at North. From the time the student is assigned to his first home room sponsor on through the student's school life, the guidance department stands readygindeed it reaches outgto serve those who need assistance and who exercise initiative in seeking it. The guidance director, Mr. Brandel, is ably assisted hy the Dean of girls, Miss Chwalek, and Counselors Miss Braun, Mr. Adamus, Miss Gregg, Miss Heiden, Mrs. Shultis, Miss Thall, and Mr. Witte. The department is organized to aid students in three fields: social, educational, and vocational. Guidance at North Division does not an on making decisions for the high school pupil, hut it stands ever alert to assist him in ' nos' L w'sely for himself. fy YN 1' VW, - guiclance Miss CHWALEK Demi of Gijfff 67clucafionaf.S2ruice5 MR. KARLSQN C1m'ir11ff1111 Cfl0I'LljlItZlfH' CURRICULUM COORDINATION To integrate all of the activities that contribute to the improvement of instruction is the fore' most task of the Curriculum Coordinator. His purpose is to keep ahreast with curriculum developf ments and to exchange information with other lvlilwaukee schools, therehy assuring everywhere academic progress. The coordinator follows through and keeps up'tofdate the curriculum reference lihrary that is kept open to the faculty. To teachers new at North Division and to student teachers assigned for study and practice here at North-to both, the coordinator gives assistance in their hecoming familiar with the philosophy and practices of teaching here. In short, his work is to promote constructive activities in the classrooms where every student may ohtain the hest type of education to meet his individual needs. As purposeful planning might well he the slogan of North's personnel services, so service is the keynote of the scho0l's educational services that are offered in the realm of curriculum coordinaf tion and audiofvisual aids. Hundreds of films and records are made available to every teacher and class wishing to use them as aids in interpreting the complexities of modern life. To supply specific sensory experience in the learning situations for N.D.H.S. students -f for that, these newer educational tools are purposefully utilized. Jacko- Mana! MR. HALL Dirermr. The crew builds most stage sets themselves, repairs and skillfully handles present equipment, and handles all the many other necessary props to present a good stage production. The public address technicians job, though not arduous, is a job of skill and intricate manipulation. The boys work patiently to bring the students of North pleasing, wellftoned an' nouncements and programs over the wires of the P. A. system. Jguabo- iauaf Adviser: Mr. Hall The audiofvisual aids department is iniporf tant in any school. Audio-visual materials can help students learn more easily and rapidly, and such aids prove helpful to teachers in guiding students with their learning. Sixty operators are available to set up equip' ment and run films. The duties of special opera' tors are as follows: student director, Guy Gurf ratt, takes charge of circulating Hlms and man' aging operations: the assistant director, Robert Giering, takes charge when the director is absent: head operators, Thomas Ehrmann, Stan' ley Guth, and john Bruno, set up special A.V.A. materials. Our school ranks high among the Milwaukee Public Schools having audiofvisual aid systems. We have eight classroom projectors, a tape ref corder, record cutter, opaque projector, two filmstrip projectors, six slide projectors, a phono' graph, and an arc projector for the auditorium. Our teachers use a larger quantity of audio' visual supplies than is used in most schools that are comparable to North Division. STAGE CR EW' Row I: R. Tcmpleman. ,l. livnz, G. Lirtzlw, R. Zirglbel. Head Coach: Mr. Ristow Assistants: Mr. Libby, Mr. Myra, Mr. Bendlin North 7 - Washington 32 Full of hope and confidence, North's Blue Devils opened the season against Washingtoim. The Purgolders put a quick jolt to the Blue and White's anticipation and swamped North, 32f7. Thus WashingtcJn's jinx had continued for nine straight years without a win for the Blue. Clear' ly outclassed and outmanned, North trailed 32fO at the half. Late in the final period, North put on a march and drove to the two. Milt johnson cracked off tackle from that spot to give us our only score. Fred Roese converted, North 0 - Pulaski 24 North bounced back from its first defeat to give a highly favored Pulaski eleven its toughest game of the year before Hnally bowing, 24fO. Pulaski scored in the first period to take a 6f0 lead, but after that, the stubborn North' siders wouldn't give in. Playing most of the game in their own territory and stopping drive after drive inside the 20, the Blue Devils were finally worn down by Pulaski's greater reserve strength. North 7 - Tech 39 After rebounding so nicely to give Pulaski a rough time, the White clad boys were walf loped by Tech, 39f7. Tech, sparked by Ron Drezwicki and Cosmo Gigante, a pair of tricky backs, ripped unmercifully through North's line as they racked up six touchdowns. The Blue and White's only score came in the third period when Dick Fischer raced 22 yards for goal. Automatic Roese again converted giving him li in a row. Tech led 13f0 at half time and then added 26 points to this lead to win at the close. -93- North 6 - South 12 North went down to its fourth straight de feat against South by a score of 12f6 South scored early in the first quarter on a 26 yard pass. In the second quarter the Southsiders drove 66 yards to score on Dale Miller's 38 yard end run North's turn came in the final period when Maurice Benner end recovered a South fumble on the 30 yard line. uarterback johnny Krog man hit jimmy King with a pass on the 18, and then flipped one into the endfzone where Glenn Dumke made a sensational catch. After this Krogman's passing kept the Cardinals on edge but time ran out before the Blue and White could score another touchdown North 6 - Custer 13 Custer received a break in the first quarter when a Krogman pass was intercepted and brought back for a touchdown. Later after Custer's second touchdown march, Krogman retaliated as he flipped a 45 yard pass to end Glenn Dumke who took the ball and raced to the three. Here he fumbled when tackled, but by playing headsfup ball he recovered in the end zone for North's six pointer. The play covered 72 yards in all. The teams battled through the second half without a score as Custer wrapped up a homecoming victory, 13f6. 2 35 E 1950 FOOTBALL SQUAD Hmmm Run: VI. Kmchzalk, Il, Knic, J. Wright, A. Uvrlufi, M. North scored early in the first quarter when fullback Leroy Drews drove over from the four. A few seconds later the Blue Devils came roaring back again as John Krogman fired an 18 yard touchdown pass to Fred Roese, who added his first of three extra points. For the rest of the half the Stars were held. In the second half the iireworks began again. Miltfnii Johnson plunged over from the one in the third quarter. Then in the final period Jimmy King broke into the scoring column as he scampered 25 yards around end. Eugene Trout, reserve quarterback, completed the Blue Devil scoring. Trout went back to pass, but when he couldn't find a receiver, he tucked the ball under his arm and romped 22 yards for the final tally. North 0- West 3 After their brief glimpse of glory the preced- ing week against Juneau, the Blue Devils ref turned to their losing ways in a dull and listless game against West with a score of 3f0. Twice in the first quarter the Blue and White recovered Redmen fumbles inside the thirty yard stripe, but they were unable to score. Late in the first half a Held goal gave West enough points to win. The teams battled each other to a standstill in the penaltyfmarred second half. North 7 - Lincoln 0 It was a cold, slippery day when North played its final game of the season against Lincoln. The only score of the game came early in the second quarter when Dick Knie snagged a Blue Comet pass and raced S0 yards to the goal. Fred Roese booted the extra point to win for the Blue Devils, 743. Lincoln had had control of the ball through most of the game until Knie's interception. After that the teams played on even ground until North, sparked by the running of Dick Fischer and Leroy Drews, marched 50 yards to the Blue and Gray three only to have the game end. Head Coach: Ristow .Af ' cjwlonord Glenn Dumke, left end, was selected on the Milwaukee journals annual allfcity squad. Glenn, a senior, climaxed four years of con' tinuous switching of positions to gain the herth on the first hallot cast. He operated in his freshman year as a halff hack, hut in his second season his power and drive caused FroshfSoph Coach Harry Bendlin to switch him to the fullback post, where he ran quite well. When fall dawned in his junior year, an ahundancc of fullhacks caused him to shift into the line. Here he saw his first action as a guard, hut within a few weeks he speared a first string spot and started the first game of the campaign. Halfway through the season, with Coach Augie Ristow having a little trouhle with his fullhack situation, he pulled Dumke into the hackfield again. He immediately dislocated his shoulder throwing a hlock, and he was side' lined for most of the rest of the year. This last season, Glenn decided that the full' hack position wasn't for him, and he pulled over to the end slot. He quickly made it self' evident that he wasn't going to play second fiddle to anyone. He sewed down the first string joh, and he stayed there all year. His punting was all that was desired, plus some. He was hy far the hest pass receiver on the team, and he scored two touchdowns on long passes throughout the campaign. The only team that ran at all consistently around his end was Pulaski, the cofchamps. All the rest found a pretty stiff wall with the name Dumke, attached. Leroy Drews, pile driving fullback and cap' tain of the squad, missed out on an allfcity herth hy the slimmest of margins, His defensive play, too, was slightly terrific, as he was one of the hest linehackers in the conference. Our hearty congratulations go to Glenn and Leroy for their fine gridiron work. GLENN DUMKE Ulnnlafy The 1950 foothall season was anything hut happy for North. The Blue Devils won only two of eight games, placing them in a tie for tenth place in the Hnal city standings. Although the Stars were rated high at the heginning of the season, their difficult early schedule seemed to crush the hoys' spirit. Meeting Washington, Pulaski, and Tech during the Hrst three weeks proved to he too much. The Blue and White lost onefsided games to Washington and Tech, hut they gave the chamf pion Ramblers a Herce hattle that would do credit to any team. After ahsorhing five losses in a row, the Blue Devils exploded for six touchdowns and an easy triumph over Juneau. The Stars then lost a tough game to West, hut they finished the season on the right foot hy squeezing past Lincoln's Comets. l 'l 4. ai .km E North 68 - Tech 46 The Blue Devils opened the conference schedf ule on the King floor against a very weak Tech five. The North squad pulled ahead in the opening minutes of the game, 815. By the end of the first quarter with the score 'l 5f9, in North's favor, it was evident the game was a walkaway. It turned out just that way, too, as the Northsiders romped to an impressive 6Sf46 victory over the Trojans. Big Dan Folz, center, dumped in 24 points and Ron Raasch, forward, followed right behind with 16. They were especially helped out in the scoring column by Al Siordia, forward, and Bob Bromberg, guard. North 63 - Washington 54 The next week, with action again on the King court, North outlasted a surprisingly strong Washington team, 6354. The teams fought it out on even terms for the first three quarters, but North finally pulled ahead with a fourth quarter flurry that saw them ice the QHIUC away. Ted Doerflinger, starting sophof more guard, really blossomed out in this game. He turned in one of the neatest ballhandling and rebounding jobs seen in quite some time. Ted, although putting in only 11 points, stole the show as he swished most of his baskets in North's last quarter rally. As usual, Dan Folz led both teams in scoring. He dropped 31 points through the hoop to move within three points of Pulaski's Russ Wittberger for the league's lead. The Washington squad was paced by Ray Zager and Tim Vick who scored 16 and 14 points. respectively. North 48 - West 51 Displaying little of the prowess and finesse that had, in the two previous conference games, averaged over sixty points per game, the North squad bowed to West. Shortly after the game started, the Redmen jumped to an 8f1 lead and kept it for the rest of the game. West, built around a terrific center, Scott Netzel, and a beautiful fast break sparked by Jerry Wall and Ron Koepp, rocked the Northsiders back on their heels through most of the first half, and they led at the halfway mark, 3025. North was kept in the battle only be' cause of their height advantage, as Dan Folz, 6'6 , dropped in 13 of these 25 points. As the third quarter progressed, Netzel had to be relieved because of fouls, and North's defense solved West's fast break, the Blue Devils' chance to pull ahead materialized. The boys in Blue, however, victims of mediocre shooting, failed to take advantage of the situaf tion. Only Ron Raasch's beautiful shooting and Dan Folz's consistent play kept the Blue Devils in the ball game. These boys accounted for 21 points, but they werenlt enough as West kept its lead, and stalled out the last two minutes to win, 5143. Folz finished with 21 points, and Raasch folf lowed close behind with 19. The hallfhandling and shooting of the team was vastly improved as they moved into a second place deadlock with West. Juneau started strong in the first period, and at one moment held an 11f6 lead. They faded, however, and North grabbed a 1-V12 lead, mainly because of Bob Bromberg's five free throws and Dan FolZ's three buckets. After this point the Bluemen were never headed. They built up a 3316 half' time lead and after an even third quarter, raced away with the contest in the final stanza. Big Folz, rebounding beautifully, again raced off with scoring honors as he dumped in 25 points. This spree brought his season total to 101 and he took the individual scoring lead away from Wittberger of Pulaski. His average of slightly over 25 points per game, if kept up, could easily smash the conference scoring record. No other Trythall man broke into the two figures: the scoring among the other boys was fairly even. Ron Raasch put in nine, Ted Doerflinger drop' ped in eight. Al Siordia seven, and Bromberg five. North 64-Bay View 35 North battled evenly with the underdog Bay View Redcats for the first three periods, but finally hit a hot streak and turned the game into a rout. Poor rehounding was the main cause for North's poor showing in the tight first three quarters, the only bright spot being Ted Doer- flinger's ball hawking. jerry Kolterman and Dan Fol: were the scoring standouts as Dan dropped in Z7 points and Jerry 12. Maust of Kolterman's f103-f scoring came on long set shots in the first half to keep the Northsiders in the game. Bay View. taking advantage of North's listless play, jumped to a 710 lead. Trythall's boys hopped right back to tie it up, and the teams fought on even terms for the rest of the quarter. In the second eight minutes North kept a slight lead all the way through and led at halftime 2423. By the end of the third stanza the Blue Devils although still playing listless ball had upped their lead to seven points, 38-31. From here largely due to Folz's 15 point barrage and Bay View's inability to hit, North turned the game into a rout as they won 64-35. North 59 - Pulaski 77 The Blue Devils, the following week, ran into an immovable object in Pulaski and were set back in a humiliating defeat, 77459. Pulaski looked as good, if not better, than even their press clippings had stated as they jumped into the lead and built it up as the game progressed. It was also a battle between individuals, as Dan Folz and Russ Wittberger, rival skyscraping een' ters, who were tied for the league lead in scorf ing, clashed. They remained tied after this game, however, as both the big boys dumped in '26 points. The rest of Pulaskfs recordfbreaking total was carried by Don Molenda and Ken Cwiklis who together scored 36 markers. Ted Doerflinger added six buckets to the Blue and White's total but it was all in vain as Pulaskfs conference leading. surefshooting squad swept past. THAT'S A HIGH ONE! North 66 - Lincoln 54 The Blue Devils upset Lincoln, 66-54, in a hard fought game at King. North hopped to an early 8f3 lead but 11 straight points for the Comets helped to give them a firstfquarter marf gin of 17f14. North retaliated, however, and sparked by john Larson and Dan Folz, the Blue and White had a 28-24 halftime lead. As in the first quarter, Lincoln came back fastg and by the aggressive play of their center, Meier, chop' ped North's lead to one point, 43142. But in the final period with Meier fouled out and Larsen, Folz, and Ted Doerflinger all hitting, North ran away with the ball game. As usual Folz was high mang this time with 24, while Larson folf lowed with 17. Doerflinger and Bob Bromberg evened out the scoring as they tallied 9 apiece. The lead changed hands and was tied seven times during the wild melee. North 56 - King 48 North for the second week in a row knocked a favored team out of first place. The victim the following week was King who had just upset Pulaski. Nine points made by Folz estabf lished North in a sixfpoint lead at the quarter mark and from that point were never headed. Along with Eolz, the four other starters, Doerf flinger, Kolterman, guards, and Bromberg and Larson, forwards, played the entire game. Ron Meredith was a pain in Northis side but when he fouled out the issue was no longer in doubt. Although playing less than three periods, Meref dith tallied 21 points. Folz also came in to share scoring honors as he, too, dumped in 21. Doerf flinger playing a fine floor game scored 14, Larf son 11 and Broniberg S, as the Blue Devils won, 56143. CONFIDENTIAL COACHES' ADVICE North 73 - Custer 42 Led by Dan Folz's recordftying total of 40 points North ran over Custer, 73f42. Dan tied Russ Wittberger's total set earlier in the year, and he also passed the Pulaski star in the inf dividual scoring dogfight. North hopped to a quick 1910 quarter lead and held it. At the end of the first half the Blue and White held a scant 34f27 margin, but in the third and final quarters the Northmen opened up and salted the game away. jerry Kolterman and Bob Bromberg dropped in 11 each and with Folz took personal control of 62 points. Eolz blasted 21 of his phenomenal total in the final period mainly because of the teamwork of four secondfstringers ff Tom Les' sila, Ray Patterson, Boob Dreher, and Eugene Meyer, who fed effectively on every available occasion. North 42 - East 44 The following week North took on lowly East. The Tigers, who had usually been but harmless felines, suddenly erupted into a claw' ing, savage band, as they upset the Blue Devils, 4442. The defeat knocked whatever title asf pirations the boys in Blue had out the back door. The game itself followed in the intense rivalry the two schools have been harboring dur' ing the last three years. Two years ago North smashed the Tigers unbeaten hve in a stunning upset, while these last two years, East with mediocre squads has laced North's hopes. After scoring 40 points a week earlier Dan Eolz went to his low of the season as he put in only 13. Ted Doerflinger added 13 and Broniberg 6, but it wasn't enough to stop the high flying Tigers. 41044 WATCH HIM! North 82 - South 70 The Blue Devils hounced off the ropes, after their pitiful showing against East, to maul South, 8170. The Cardinals raced off to a 5fO lead, hut the Blue and White soon hroke that marging and, continuing their fired up play, the Trythall men huilt up that lead and at the half' way mark it stood 42528. With a 14 point lead at the half North kept South away from striking distance the rest of the game. Dan Folz as usual led hoth teams with 36 points, although his inahility on the free throw line fhe missed 17 of 'llj cost him the game scoring record. Jerry Kolterman playing some magnificent hall pump' ed in 22, and the ever dependable Ted Doerf flinger added ten. Conclusion Averaging 62 points per game to their opf ponents' 51, the Blue Devils concluded a fine hoop season. Finishing in a third place tie, the Blue and White amassed an S win 3 loss record. Besides the team effort there were some in' dividual performances that couldn't he overf shadowed. Dan Folz tied the conference single game scoring record and led the conference in scoring, also a new record. Ron Raasch and Dick Cassarie graduated at midyear to leave a gaping hole in the lineup: however, John Larson, up from the frosh, filled the gap quite well. He teamed with Folz, Ted Docrllinger, jerry Kolterman, Boh Bromherg, and Al Siordia to give North a hetter than ex' pected second semester record. The squad reached the high point in the sea' son when they upset hoth Lincoln and King on consecutive weekends. Their low point came when the tahles were turned as the hoys howed to underdog East. In a sort of antifclimax in the last game of the year North poured in S2 points to set a new conference record. OfOfO-PS! AH! ,am af, J.1.,,..,,. Six foot, six inch Dan Folz was selected on hoth the Sentinel and the Journal allfcity lives. Dan, who helped spark the Blue and White to their third place finish, was placed at a forward Spot. Folz, vastly improved this season, garnered 294 points in the eleven game schedule to set a new individual scoring record. He also hooked and tipped in 40 points against Custer, which was high enough to tie another record. His lowest scoring total came in the second last game of the year when he tallied 18 points, an astronomical figure to most haskcthallers. His 294 points average is slightly ahove 26 per game. He has just one semester left, and should reach the magical 100 mark in scoring for the third year in a row. As a trihute to his fine character, Folz was awarded the principal's goodfsportsmanship trophy in a poll of the squad. DAN FOLZ Norfh's Tennis Team . . . VVOXV! Mcuga, J. Rcddcmann, Although producing some topfflight perform' ers in some of the individual events, North, this past season, was hampered by the lack of depth on the 19504951 swimming team. Coaches Ristow and Adamus again directed the aquatic hopeful hut the results weren't too en' couraging. On the hrighter side, however, even with the small amount of talent the boys did manage to walk off with winning laurels in two of their dual meets, those with M.U.S. and with West Allis Central. In the Little City meet, Art Gee and Captain jim Reddeman swept through to firsts in the diving and the ZOO yard free style, respectively. Both boys set records with the performance. The team as a whole, however, unlike those of previous years, finished at low tide. Letters were awarded to Reddeman, Gee, Jack Moga, and Dick Folzman. All of these boys will be back next year and with the help of Schulkin, Fike, Worth, Green, Rodefer, and Bogust should help the Blue and White regain its swimming superiority. -110- 4'Q4'iii' UP! The boys had been preparing for the meet every day since school started in September. In the Class A, which is for seniors, five Northsiders finished in the top ten places to pave the way for a total of 6,930 points, which was over 500 more than second place of Rufus King. -112-A HOLD IT' First place in the meet was taken by Gene Hanson with 939 points. He found himself holding tightly on to only three lettermen: namely, sprinters jim King and Alex Mitchell, and john Krogman, high and broad jumper. He had lost Duane Pedrianna and Andy Henderson, both of whom had taken iirsts in many of the meets last year, The 1971 version of the boys of the Blue Devil track squad made short work of their miseries, and quickly they jumped off on their way to a fairly successful year. They smothered South, 6943, and only bowed to West and Juneau after tightly contested dual meets. Pacing the squad so far, as was expected, was Jim King. King for the last three years had been one of the best shortfdistance men in the city. Bob Pogerelc and Alex Mitchell were also in there scoring heavily in the 100 and 200, besides running legs on the relay team. The jumping jacks, John Larson, Austin McClendon, and Krogman, have also warmed Thompson's admiration. Larson has been operf ating successfully in the high jump while Mc' Clendon does all his leaping in the broad jump.
