NORTI-I'S SPIRIT CIF GIVING Veterans' Hospital, I Milwaukee, Wisconsin, December 30, 1940.I To the Members of the Girls' Club, I North Division High School: The other day I was fortunate rd meet the chairman of the Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign ars. She gives four days a week without pay to visiting disabl d veterans. Her comment will interest you. She said, I am so glad to meet you. I have been seeing those trees in the wards ear after year, and do you know all the cigarettes and other thi gs that we bring in don't compare with the trees. The men wantI the trees. They need them. The trees are the symbol of Christmas. if ' lk PH f Late in the afternoon on the daynhe trees were distributed, we took some to the so-called ne1ivous ward. The patients thought they had been overlooked aid how pleased they were when they saw us. We asked some oi? the patients who were up and around to assist us. Such fun as they had. :sf vs xg One patient came up and remarkdd, Do you know I got to know more of the other patients in thle last twenty minutes than I have in the nine months I have been here. This afternoon it seemed as though I just couldn't stick it out. I sure am thankful for my tree. I wk is XI At least 975 trees were distributed. The 27 patients in the restraint ward were given fruit, cand and cookies. Thus more than a thousand disabled veterans we e remembered. Almost one-third of all this good cheer was due to the gen- erosity of the students and teachers of orth Division High School. May the New Year have as much happiness in store for you as you brought to the disabled ex-ser ice men. A very special thank-you to Mr. erner, Miss Luker, Miss Suckow and Mr. Duwe for their loyal support in this project. Sincerely you s, MA Y GEERLINGS, Chairman, co-operating with Social Service, Veterans' Administration. I 1: Pk af, P. S. Here is a letter that will be of special interest to you. fXTIQA-cufffCu1af Christmas cheer is the order of business for the Girls' Club during the holiday season. As has been the custom, members of the Girls' Club distributed small trees to the disabled veterans at the Soldiers' Home. :X total of 382.00 was collected from stu- dents here at North and was used to purchase 270 trees and trim- mings. The club members and members of the choir who went to distribute the trees enjoyed the visit greatly. Round and round they go, and where they stop-. VVhat goes round and round? he asked. Why, tires on automobiles, came the answer. And. speaking of tires, did you see the movie on the manufacture of tires given at the Chemistry Club recently? It was fine. And did you miss a senior farewell? The graduates will not forget that for a long, long time. To move or not to move, that is the question. This problem confronts the members of the Chess Club as they play in the club tournament. The winner in this contest will receive an award. The club members are acquainted with Mr. John Flashingbauer, the city champion chess player, who demonstrated his winning moves at a recent meeting. For interesting entertainment, visit the Chess Club. Education and success were the topics recently discussed at a combined meeting of the Boys' and Girls' Leadership Groups. Mr. VVerner addressed the group with questions and answers taken from a pamphlet issued by Information, Please. He then interpreted the answers to the group. Looking into and preparing for the future, the Photo Club is planning its next semester's program. Among other things, it will sponsor its annual photo salon for the students at North Division. The club also discussed the photographic staff of the new newspaper. It is an annual event in the Girls' Leadership Group to have the privilege of hearing a short talk by Mr. Werner at a joint meeting with the Boys' Leadership Group in the library. Ques- tions which face everybody after graduation were discussed in his talk. Everyone was advised to keep his eyes and ears open to opportunities of today which might become valuable, take an in- terest in everything, make contacts, and have a good sense of humor. Congratulations should be offered to the cast of the German Club play presented at their Christmas party. Other special fea- tures were a solo and a duet, besides a few community songs. A hilarious time was had by all. An interesting program was given by the Shakespeare Club for the senior farewell. New officers were elected who will, they feel sure, carry on in the best tradition of the club. Are you a mathematician? If you are, test your knowledge of mathematical terms by unjumbling the following brain-teaser which Bernhardine Poch produced at the last Math Club meet- ing. Each group of letters, arranged in proper order, is a geo- metric or algebraic expression. The first letters of each word THE TATTLER 31
