MISS VENUS 1988 MR. JLIPITER 1988 Everyone was nervous as the time ticked away, and their inter- view session was drawing near. How should I act? What should I say? What if they ask me . ? Does my make-up look okay? These were a few of the questions asked by the girls all night. Finally the moment came, they had to go on stage. So it was smiles on their faces and posture perfect as they paraded down the ramp, as their name was called, nervously trying to remember their speeches and trying not to trip. Then it was a mad dash to the dressing room to change into their evening gowns for the final walk. As they changed the guys went out on stage for their judging. They were judged on appearance, per- sonality, and interview. M, . ., Mr.. . is W wry Warsaw me? Exchange Students They've Come A Long Way People think that we are strange because we come from a different country. We have T.V., we have cars, we have everyth- ing that Americans have. We just do things differently. Those were the words of Jacob Jack Neilson. He's right, too. Jacob decided to come to America because he had heard good things about our country. His grandfather owns a ceramic gift shop which attracts American tourists. Since he's had six years of English in school, he was able to talk to them. He was excited when he found out he was coming to America. He says that living with the Fraziers is fun , Jacob thinks that Americans are conservative with almost everything. School is about the same. In Denmark, Jacobs says that the teachers trust the students. If there are 24 students in a class, there is one teacher. If there are 25 or more students there are two teachers. All of the subjects are mandatory ex-foreign lan- guage. Like a normal teenager, Jacob has chores at home in Denmark, like cutting the grass. He has one little brother and one big brother. His father is a principal at a high school. Both men and women work. Over here, he thinks that football is Great , that some of the girls wear too much make-up, and likes Prince and Michael Jackson. Friday and Saturday nights in Denmark are spent at a disco, dancing his socks off. Balta Abellan comes from Spain where his family owns a hotel and restaurant. He has two brothers and two sisters. Balta decid- ed to come to America because his brother and cousin had been here before. He wanted to come so that he could learn more English, learn American culture, and to live with a new family. He says that he loves living with the Cummings. The Families in Spain are very close. They live about five minutes away from each other and are all together for the holidays. In school, the subjects are all mandatory. There are 40 people in a class in school and 500 people in a room in college. One to two or three people out of the whole school get scholar- ships. The subjects in college are S400 each subject. Balta also has jobs to do in Spain. Since his family owns a hotel, he works as a waiter in the restaurant, during the summer and after school. When you are 18, you have to join the military force for a year and a half. After that, you either stay in the military or go to work. One thing that Balta loves the most is going to a bullfight. He says that he sees it as an art. Spain is run by a president, a king, andfor a queen. He remembers when a dictator used to rule Spain. You can vote when you are 18. Def Leppard, Whitney Houston, and Tina Turner are his favorites. Balta also likes to go dancing on weekends. 21
