These were a few of the questions asked by the girls all night. Finally the moment came, they had to go on stage. So it was smiles on their faces and posture perfect as they paraded down the ramp, as their name was called, nervously trying to remember their speeches and trying not to trip. Then it was a mad dash to the dressing room to change into their evening gowns for the final walk. As they changed the guys went out on stage for their judging. They were judged on appearance, per- sonality, and interview. The final results were, 4th runner up- Sammy Garza, 3rd' Darnell Hendricks, 2nd Justin Jones, lst- Bill Lee, and Mr. Jupiter 1988 Balta Abellan. The top ten finalist were, K. Brown, L. Glenn, C. Exchange Students They've Come A Long Way People think that we are strange because we come from a different country. We have T.V., we have cars, we have everyth- ing that Americans have. We just do things differently. Those were the words of Jacob Jack Neilson. He's right, too. Jacob decided to come to America because he had heard good things about our country. His grandfather owns a ceramic gift shop which attracts American tourists. Since he's had six years of English in school, he was able to talk to them. He was excited when he found out he was coming to America. He says that living with the Fraziers is fun , Jacob thinks that Americans are conservative with almost everything. School is about the same. In Denmark, Jacobs says that the teachers trust the students. If there are 24 students in a class, there is one teacher. If there are 25 or more students there are two teachers. All of the subjects are mandatory ex-foreign lan- guage. Like a normal teenager, Jacob has chores at home in Denmark, like cutting the grass. He has one little brother and one big brother. His father is a principal at a high school. Both men and women work. Over here, he thinks that football is Great , that some of the girls wear too much make-up, and likes Prince and Michael Jackson. Friday and Saturday nights in Denmark are spent at a disco, dancing his socks off. Balta Abellan comes from Spain where his family owns a hotel and restaurant. He has two brothers and two sisters. Balta decid- ed to come to America because his brother and cousin had been here before. He wanted to come so that he could learn more English, learn American culture, and to live with a new family. He says that he loves living with the Cummings. The Families in Spain are very close. They live about five minutes away from each other and are all together for the holidays. In school, the subjects are all mandatory. There are 40 people in a class in school and 500 people in a room in college. One to two or three people out of the whole school get scholar- ships. The subjects in college are S400 each subject. Balta also has jobs to do in Spain. Since his family owns a hotel, he works as a waiter in the restaurant, during the summer and after school. When you are 18, you have to join the military force for a year and a half. After that, you either stay in the military or go to work. One thing that Balta loves the most is going to a bullfight. He says that he sees it as an art. Spain is run by a president, a king, andfor a queen. He remembers when a dictator used to rule Spain. You can vote when you are 18. Def Leppard, Whitney Houston, and Tina Turner are his favorites. Balta also likes to go dancing on weekends. 21 Mr. And Miss NDHS 1987-88 Sammy Garza and Dena Ken- nedy were selected by the facul- ty as the 1987-88 Mr. and Miss North DeSoto High School. This honor represents leader- ship, academic responsibility, as well as personality. Sammy is the president of the North DeSoto Band. He says he really tries to set an example for other students and feels he now has more students looking up to him than ever. The yearbook staff asked Sammy why he feels he was chosen for such a special honor and he said, I feel the teachers really like and respect me. When asked what his first reac- tion was to the news of this hon- or, he replied, I just could not believe I was picked for some- thing so special. Sammy is really glad Dena was chosen as Miss North De- Soto I-Iigh School. I-Ie feels she deserves this honor. Dena is a member of the choir, FBLA, and the Reader's and Writer's clubs. f it I In response to what her first reaction was, Dena replied, When Mrs. Oswalt told me, I turned red and started to cry. I thought someone else would be chosen. Dena said she feels like the teachers chose her because she has a very good relationship with them. We also asked her how she felt about Sammy being chosen as Mr. North DeSoto I-Iigh School. She said she wouldn't have chosen anyone else. 1:-.xv - 5+ - ' rw. 2 .zfrwm Qi.. f . ' . ' ...... . You're alone, scared, and morti- fied, How did I get myself into this? you think. Sweat is running down your back, your heart is throbbing, you look at your hands and see them shaking. A sudden noise catches your attention. Then you realize that you're not alone anymore. You hear faint footsteps. Step. Step. Step. They get closer and closer until they stop right behind you. Trembling, you turn around and find yourself looking into the eyes of a lone, dark stranger. What does he want? you wonder. He continues to stare at you. You're trapped and cornered and therels no way out. Does that sound like your first day at a job? It probably does. Oh sure, you may have to get up early and then have to put up with some grouchy customers all day, but remember that your a lucky person. You belong to a rare group of people. The Few, the Proud, the EM- PLOYED! We have three of those employed people doing what they do best. We see Sharon talking up a storm, Alicia making goo-goo eyes at a baby, and Sheri fooling around with alot of money. Was heard over and over as the ball switched sides. Show no mercy was their motto as the Ju- niors and Seniors took on the Freshman and Sophomores in our first annual ND!-IS Powder Puff football game. Kill, Kill was all that went through the girls minds as they stepped out on the field after a week of hard practice. Each was determined to beat the other or never show their face in public again. Prom - A definite MEM- ORY of a LIFETIME. This year the Juniors started planning for the prom with a new goal in mind-having the prom away from the school campus. After alot of hard work and time spent at car washes, dances, paying dues, etc. they did it. The prom would finally be away from school. The new loca- tion would be the Holidome in Shreve- port. The night finally came and everyone was excited! Girls rushed around try- ing to make everything just perfect while the guys tried to play it cool and be fashionably late. As the guests began arriving they couldn't believe their eyes, the room was beautiful! It had just the right touch of elegance to make everyone feel sophisticated. It took awhile for the dancing to really get going at first. Maybe because everyone was pigging out on the spectacular foods that were prepared for us or maybe they were still in shock that we were actually at the Holidome. Finally a few brave couples began slow dancing and then stayed on the floor for the next fast dance. That got everyone in the groove of things. lex- cept for the ones still pigging out!! Once the dancing started, it couldnlt be stopped, even the teachers and parents were boogying the night away with the students! Finally there is that small group that is still left after the crowd is gone, still dancing and having the time of their lives. The waiters are starting to clean up, their still dancing! Hey, save some of that energy for next year. wt if Our first annual prom King and Queen was Cedric Turner and Rolanda Hewitt The Marquee out in front of the Holidome speaks for itself All night everyone got in groups and did all the latest dances. P 0 The cake and other food at the prom were all delicious There was nonstop dancing, talking, and picture taking all night Leaving with sore feet and lots of great memo- ries! 28 MAKI G THE GRADE THE HEAD OF THE Valedictorian Becky Steven plans to attend Louisiana College in Pineville and study either Pre-Med or Physical Therapy. This year was a year for change for the NDHS yearbook staff with new advisor, Mrs. Deborah Taylor. A few changes and adjustments had to be made because of the loss of our yearbook hour. This was the biggest blow because we had to work during our lunch hour, on weekends, on our free time, and even the first part of the summer. lt got tiring at times and we wanted to just throw it all away, but we kept reminding ourselves of what the fi- nal product was going to look like. When we first came together as a yearbook staff, the hardest part was getting used to each other's habits, good and bad. Of course there were a few arguments here and there, but they always man- aged to work themselves out. Jus- tin probably had to do the most adjusting being the only guy on a staff full of girls. We had to do a lot of fund raising this year because of the increase size of the yearbook. The staff had many different fund raisers that range from dances to candy sales, to a booth at the carni- val. This yearls theme, Celebrate '88, was chosen because we believe a year at North DeSoto High School is more than just work, it's a lot of fun, almost like a party where all your friends are there to study with you, laugh with you, cry with you. fHey it's my party and l'll cry if l want toll, or just be there to talk with. The 1987-88 yearbook staff sincerely hopes you like our theme choice and that you enjoy this year- book. From all the staff- We Love You and are proud to be a part of this memory! One purpose of the Student Gov- ernment is to link the stu- dents with the teachers. The Students chosen to be offi- cers and homeroom repre- sentatives will write the new Student Government consti- tution. The officer candidates campaigned with posters and name tags for about two weeks and ended their cam- paign with a speech infront of the student body. Homeroom representatives were chosen to be on the Student Govern- ment as spokespersons for their homerooms. Since this is our first Stu- dent Government, it will set an example for years to come in the history of North De- soto. Also, the constitution that will be written will serve as the official rules and regu- lations for the Student Gov- ernment in years to come. A cheerleader s Job is to raise school spirit show to the teams and to act as representatives from North DeSoto everywhere they go During football and basket ball season their life consists of practice cheering at games, painting signs, and planning pep rallies. It takes lots of practice, patience, and time but it s really worth it As you can see we caught some of our cheerleaders do ing what they do best We caught Jennifer practicing to be a rockette Tricia laughing about Lord knows what the group showing off their jack ets at the football banquet and Shelley concentrating on a dance move. They cheered on the J.V. teams this year along with the help of their mascot Missy. About two hours after school ended, you could 4 l see them excitedly cheering and showing their school spirit either on the football field or the basketball court. They Spent A Night In Space A Trip To NASA On Wednesday, April 20, twenty students and chaperones left NDHS for Huntsville, Alabama. Their Desti- nation was the Space Center at NASA. The ride all day put them in Huntsville around 9:30 P.M. Thursday morning the students and sponsors had breakfast at the Space Center. After breakfast the activities began with a bus ride of the Red Stone Ammunition plant. At the plant they saw the testing sites of the Jupiter and shuttle booster rockets. They also saw where the fuel was stored for all types of rockets. Next, the group toured the Rocket Museum where they saw all types of conventional and military rockets- both new and old. The highlight of the morning was the Lunar landing simulation. The stu- dents were strapped into a couch while the entire room spun around at about 35 mph. The couches fell back and the rooms' floor dropped out from underneath the students' feet. The entire time this was happening the students were watching a movie of a rocket simulation. After the lunar land- ing simulator movie, the group re- turned for a more down to earth mov- ie. The movie was about astronauts' dreams and determination. After the movie the students were able to deter- mine how much they weighed on the moon and Mars. They also saw the entire photo history of all the astro- nauts. By 3 P.M. they had to load the bus for the ride home. Everyone agreed that the bus drivers Mel and Tom were great. The trip was a joint venture be- tween NDHS, Mansfield High School, Logansport High School, and Stanley High School. .. iv, k 4, Even though they returned at 3 A.M. everyone was enthusiastic about wanting to make this an annual trip. Several fund raising activities were employed to reduce the cost of the trip for the students. Chaperones for the trip were Mrs. Clinton, Mrs. Stanley, Mrs. Rushton, Mrs. Pace. Do you ever wonder what will be going through your mind when youfre a Senior? Well, these Seniors have finally found out. You will be thinking about no more tardies, homework, grouchy teachers, and annoy- ing underclassmen . . . all these memories are forever locked away in your locker as you close it for the last time, but not for- gotten. During the last few weeks of school, you're busy and rushed for time as you finish you term paper and saying good-bye to friends and teachers, but as you walk down the long isle toward the diploma that youlve worked so hard to get, just remem- ber that you can take that diploma home, but there are always those unforgettable things that you just can't take home, like: dances, your first date, Senior Prom, Sen- ior skip day, etc. These events, people, and moments can be captured by pictures that you can look at, but pictures aren't quite the same as memories. Imagine, for a moment, that your mind is a television with a built in VCR, and that each memory that you have is recorded on a tape. Whenever you feel like remember- ing something, all you have to do is select the tape labeled Senior Prom or Graduation , slide it into the back of your mind, and push play. As you watch this special event in your mind, you wish that it somehow you could go back to that mo- ment and relive it just one more time. You want to feel the way you felt at that very moment, and most of all, you want to take someone with you. As they are flipping through the pages of a yearbook, Jacob Neilson and Cassan- dra Crowder, Senior class favorites, are remembering things that can never happen again. Penrlywell James Stanley William Thomas Johnny White A Michael Freeman The Party'S Qver been hose What A Celebration! Well, the school year is over and we have come to the end of the book, but the celebration will go on forever. We have had some great times and some not so great times, like laughing with friends or getting caught cheating on a test. The staff has tried to capture all these moments for you to see forever in your yearbook and l sincerely hope we've done it. You learn alot when you work closely with the same group of people for a long time, especially their habits and moods. I learned that MeLisa likes things done her way and she giggles alot, Pam is just plain insane at times, Sheri always has a story to tell, Stacey comes to sit on the floor, and me, well I just go crazy! ln a way I'm sorry that the year is over and the book is finished, but in a way l'm not because the hard work is finished. Well, until next year, we can say goodbye to the teachers, the rules, football games, Pep rallies, basketball games, six weeks tests, track meets, term papers, homework, homework, homework, bus rides, lunch time, trips, etc. So everyone have a great summer and I'll see you next year! Stacy Ybos, Editor MeLisa is griping again! Mrs. Taylor and Sheri give tips on sort- ing pictures. Samari Pam releases some of her bottled up anger! WHAT A YEAR!!! ffm?
