Woodrow Wilson ,.....,,.. 6 28 20 21 19 25 6 7 13 3 CoAcH HYDE 1938 FOOTBALL REVIEW In a season which was not so successful as the last two, the 1938 North Dallas eleven executed a nine-game schedule winning only two games and tying one. Ineligibility of two stellar backfield men and 21 decided lack of good line material holding them to a slow start, the Bull- dogs wound up in fifth place in the city series. North Dallas lost to some great teams in bowing to Tyler, East Texas champions, McKinney, runners-up in District 7 g Sunset, winners of Dis-- trict 8, John Reagan, champions of the Houston district. A razzle- dazzle Adamson eleven, which passed the Bulldogs dizzy, was the only team without title hopes to beat North Dallas. A line which seasoned as the year progressed led the North Dallas warriors to wins over Forest and a strong Sherman team. The 1938 grid war came to a close with two close battles, a tie against Tech and a hard-fought defensive battle with Woodrow, which saw Co-captains Austin and Fleet seriously injured, leaving North Dallas vir- tually without an offense. In this game a gallant forward wall held the Wildcats to a last-minute field goal. A great deal of credit goes to Coaches Anderson and Hyde for their fine work in developing this green line to a precision machine, each part of which carried out-his duty well in spite of difficulites. Cheerl ders Left I0 riglzl: Rex Harris, Dorothy Lock rt, Jimmie Heitman, Mary Catherine Moore Joe Bibby, and Peggy Angus. A lt s......a.........m....... i . lm ' Basketball Decidedly lacking in experienced material, the North Dallas basketball quintet, headed by Coach O. A. Cruce in his first year for the Orange and Wlliite, finished in fifth place in the City Series, Winning three games and losing seven. The Bulldog five won from Sunset by forfeit and from Tech in the highest-scoring game of the season for the local tribe in the first half of the race. In the second half North Dallas managed to beat only Forest, but played some close thrillers, notably an extra-period lieartbreaker with Adamson. Lettermen were Russell Bennett, Arthur Hamilton, Earl Austin, Howard Swimller, Frank Swift, Jimmie O'Cor1- nor, Allen Leach, Jim Xvyatt, Sam Nesbit, and manager, Xvalton Nwilson. Other members of the team pictured above are ,lack Curry, Joe Curry, John Donnahue, Charles Lancaster, Kirk Relyea, Jimmie XVilson, Elwood Townsley, Bob Mullarkey, and Charles O'Dell. Golf Mr. XVitmeyerls golf team wasn't up to par this season becausxcyof the loss of several lettermen. Next year they expect to have a more successful season. 1 The boys on the team are as follows left to right: ' nk Crowley, George Davis, Dan Carson, Herbert Schmie- deke, Jack Nichols. V J JIQEIQEAALSMMM ' 'ilfihimludhwimmf y v ubiffiifriv. ?Y51?:J??ItK!Y!Zr'Z.??1T'l:ft:22sHS!! 5!' 'iliairksliu 3 BasebaH Green material hindered Coach F. M. Fulton's aspirants for the 1939 baseball race. Good pitching, marred by mediocre fielding, stands out as the best part of the fair team, which is expected to finish about fifth in the eity. Berkley hurled a two-hit ball game with Forest. The team has good prospects for next year. The regular team is made up of johnny Caldwell, Martin Skaggs, Bob Berkley, ,Iimmie Llewellyn, Elwood Townsley, XValton W'ilson, Jimmie O'Connor, Lawrence Moellenburg, Chester Klein, and Henry Martinez. Other members of the squad are J. D. Noble, Bill Noakes, Davis Howell. Jimmie Fitvpatrick. Iirank XY'atson, Charles Lancaster. George Shehan, and Bob Mullarkey. Tennis The 1939 netters of North Dallas experienced their least successful season in more than ten years. Outstand- ing were the consistently fine showing of the boys' doubles team and the fact that 0. A. Cruce held the coaching job for his initial year. The team was made up of the following: James MeNiel, Boys' Singlesg Helen Swanson, Girls' Singles, George Wuiiderliek and johnny Saville, Boys' Doubles, Irma Cooper and Marie Daniels, Girls' Doublesg -I. M. Howell and Leah Heilig, Mixed Doubles. a Track Led by Foy Garison and Frank Farris, the Bulldog thinly-clads of 1939 experienced a successful season. North Dallas has had fine track teams for several seasons, and this year was no exception. The Bulldogs finished second in the city series, barely being squeezed out of the championship by Sunset. Early season practice and the regular triangular meets failed to reveal the power of the local track squad. After winning only one triangular meet, the Bulldogs were rated little better than fourth, but were conceded the title, 'Qdark horsef' The results of the city race, however, made the North Dallas speed merchants a threat to the state title. Coach Rufus Hyde's squad was larger this year than ever before. Seventy-eight hopefuls reported for the Spring sport. But, in direct contrast to the great size of the team, the Bulldogs depended on two men for three-fourths of their points in the City Meet. Of the thirty-six points North Dallas took, six- teen were donated by Garison and ten by Farris. Orange and White color-bearers in the City Meet were Foy Garison, Frank Farris, Hal Patrick, Jack Nichols, Robert Harris, Bill Keller, Edwin May, Peyton Cullum, Fred Gannon, Thomas Canty, Richard Hardy, George Dorman, Jimmy Wilson, Jimmy Compton, Pat Mul- larkey, Billy Jolly, Jimmy O'Connor, W. L. Patrick, J. L. Garrison, Jack Hagan, Jimmie Heit- man, Kenneth Woods, Elwood Townsley, Abel Gary. Bobby Porter, Harold Crossen, Lawrence Moellenburg, and Joe Curry. Events in which North Dallas placed are as follows: 100-yard Dash-Farris, first, Garison, third. 220-yard Dash-Farris, first. 120-yard High Hurdles-Wilson, second. 880-yard Run-Garison, first. Broad Jump--Garison, first, W. L. Patrick, second. High Jump-Garison, tie for first. Javelin Throw-Townsley, second. Mile Relay-Keller, May, Harris, and Hal Patrick, fourth. Scores of the six schools in the meet were Sunset, 452 points, North Dallas, 36 points, Woodrow Wilson, 31M points, Adamson, 30 points, Forest, 10 points, Technical, Ipoint.
