Heath M unnerlyn Andrews Warren Boys' Debating Team AS a result of the elimination in boys' debating held the evening of March 29, the boys' debating team was selected. George Heath and Loren Warren were chosen to represent North Dallas in the City Debating Contest to be held at Forest High School, April 20. Gra- ber Kidwell was named alternate. The question for debate selected and approved by the lnterscholastic League was-Resolved: That a United States Department of Education Should Be Fsablished with a Secretary in the President's Cabinet. Loren Warren was the alternate last year. Both members of the team assure the school that they will put forth their very best efforts in an attempt to Win the city championship for North Dallas and to represent the school in the district meet at Denison. Qirls' Debating Team THIS year's debating team for girls is composed of Janet Andrews and Mildred Munner- lyn. Mildred, a member of last year's team, has proved herself a finished speaker and seems to have every requisite of a great public speaker. planet, a newcomer to North Dallas, has already shown that she is a clear, deep, conservative thinker. Last year she represented one of the Fort Worth high schools in the State Debate. Practice debates have been held with Highland Park High School and with the Hub- bard City High School. In the former our girls lost with the decision of 2-I in favor of the Highlanders. Not discouraged by this defeat, but stimulated for harder Work, they succeeded in tying the visiting representatives from Hubbard City. With these and several other practice debates in the near future, our girls will be fully prepared for the City Elim- ination Debate Contest Which Will be held in Dallas on April 15. NOTE: Since the above was written, the North Dallas girls won first place in the All-City Contest. 1 ' film, as it'tii'ltr ,1 5.9 'Q .'Ci'

In this contest, originated by our Mr. Tardy, the city schools compete for a large loving cup offered by Dr. W. VV. Shortal. On the night of January 20, 1927, at Bryan Street High School, this cup was won for North Dallas by Jimmie Parker, giving the Cancion del Pirata by Jose de Fspronceda. This cup was taken from Sunset High School who won it last year, and it will have to be won two more times by North Dallas before it can remain permanently in our trophy case. Interscholasttc Ueclamation Contest WEDNESDAY, March 16, 1927, after school, six candidates entered the elimination contest. All declamations had carefully been selected as was evident by the talent shown. The contest was very close indeed and the three judges taxed their ability in choos- ing the two representatives. Those who entered the tryout Were: Alliene Brandon, William Rembert, Alex Courtney, Joe Doris Hooper, Marjorie Connell, and Langford Shaw. In the city contest each high school is represented by one girl and one boy. The contestants must select their declamations from speeches of prominent men on the general subject of Americanism. - Under the coaching of Miss Gladys Ray the two representatives, Alliene Brandon and Langford Shaw, prepared for the city contest held Tuesday night, March 22, 1927, at Oak Cliff High School. Alliene, who won second place, is a forceful speaker and demonstrates that she has carefully studied the art of public speaking. She is excellent in enunciation, clarity, emphasis, and delivery. Langford also gives promise of becoming an effective speaker. NOTE: Since the above accounts were written, The Viking has learned that Charles E. Long of North Dallas has the distinction of being city champion in the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest. fliis VIKING 19 247 Pi- I
