THE HARRY STERN AND ELLA STERN CULTURAL CENTER The Cultural Center is the headquarters for the college's music and drama departments. and will be the site for several concerts, performances and programs. Called a building of many fine qualities, the center was designed for study, practice and the enjoyment of music and drama. 1 The cultural center, headquarters for the music and drama departments at NDSSS, has much to offer the college and community. It was recently recognized as one of seven North Dakota architectural projects for outstanding design quality. it is centered around a 500-seat auditorium which features an orchestra pit and a baby grand piano. Another highlight of the building is the Madge Vertin Alumni Room. Housed with furnishings from the Wahpeton home of the late Madge Vertin. an ardent college booster and benefactor. this room features an original dining room set. antique love seat, pictures, miscellaneous tables, secretary desk, and candelabras. A Greetings: The North Dakota State School of Science continues to seek New Horizons. In so doing, the students are challenged to develop to their full potential through quality instruction and participation in activities that will serve them well. The College is not satisfied with the status-quo. There is a relentless effort to adapt our programs and activities to meet the students need. Every effort is made to provide facilities that will help develop New Horizons among the students! The newly completed Harry Stern-Ella Stem Cultural Center truly emplifies this theme. For the first time, students have adequate practice and performance facilities to develop to new horizons through music and drama programs. The potential for New Horizons was also achieved, when the Activities Center was placed in use! This functional facility provides for the student's recreational needs and further improves their physical well-being. These New Horizons were achieved because people cared and shared! We are eternally grateful to the many who gave of their resources to assist the College to achieve such milestones. We will continue our effort to develop the College to assure that the students have continued opportunity to seek New Horizons and thus are even better prepared to live a useful and productive life. Sincerely, Last year's Agawasie Day was held in the month of May. The theme for the 1983 cnnual was “Agawasie Traditions”. The book consisted of 1983 Campus Activities. Students, and Organizations. Students received their copy during the annual Agawasie Day festivities. During the day there was entertainment provided by the band, “Crystal Sunshine”., and the annual Agawasie Picnic. Loretta Gross, a 21 year-old Bismarck student was crowned NDSSS 1983 Campus Sweetheart at the annual Sweetheart Ball. Crowned by Clair T. Blikre. she was among three finalists chosen in the preliminary election from an original 12 candidates. The other finalists were Pat Jette and Gail Pueppke. Parent's Day Over 1700 people attended the 12th Annual Parent's Oay at North Dakota State School of Science last year. Parent's Day was held on Friday. March 25. and all parents and relatives of NDSSS students were invited. For those parents who arrived early, a preparents day program was held on Thursday, March 24. and was conducted by the college's music department. During parent's day, scheduled activities included campus tours, programs, department exhibits, demonstrations, and the Governor's Art Show Display. Parents also had the opportunity on many occassions to meet the faculty and visit residence halls. 12 Parent’s NDSSS Art Players Present 'Mary, Mary' In February, the Science Art Players presented a three-act comedy. “Mary. Mary . The play was under the direction of Rev. Stephen Hanning of Wahpeton. and assisted by Lisa Bruesch. a second year pre-nursing student, also of Wahpeton. During the outdoor season we won three meets and placed third in the NDCAC meet. The following three Wildcat Track men placed in the NJCAA Nationals in San Angelo. Texas: -Terry Godfrey 7th Javelin -Roland Jacob 8th High Jump -Bob Larson Shotput 14 Men s Trock Women's Track The NOSSS Women's Track team successfully defended its Region Xlll title by defeating Golden Valley Lutheran College 190-138. Region champions included Julie Johnston-Long Jump. Chris Benzie-Shot Put and Discus. Renee Gripentrog-Javefcn, Brenda Olsen-200 and 400 meter dash, and the 400 meter relay team consisting of Sue Sturdevant. Brenda Olsen. Jackie Abers, and Val Miller. Brenda Olsen was named Region XIH Female Athlete for her meet record performances in the 200. 400. 400 meter relay, and second place finishes in the 100 meter dash and 1600 meter relay. At the NJCAA National meet in SanAngelo. TX May 19,21 Chris Benzie placed third in both the shot put and discus throw. She was awarded All-American status for her individual efforts. The 400 meter relay placed 5th in 48.68. (FAT) NDSSS established college records in the 100, 200,400. 400 meter relay and the heptathlon-Lisa Cook, this season. Many students from the various Clubs and Organizations competed against each other for the great verdict: winning or loosing. Both men and women had great seasons, and for the winning teams and players, they will always remember the high flies, strike-outs, and the unforgettable, great homeruns. Spring Softool 21 Ads 23 BLAZER lounge A Fun Place To Eat And Drink THE LOUNGE WITH THE POUND” Commencement exercises were held May 26.1983 with 1546 students honored. The commencement address was given by Norman Starr of Melville. Mont., a 1950 NDSSS alumnus and roncher. Dr. Jack Pfister. Wahpeton and NDSSS President Clair T. Blikre conferred degrees and presented diplomas and certificates on beholf of the state board. The processional was lead by Larry Donis, Wiilmar. Minn, and Evan Kruegar. Wolverton, Minn. Graduation 25 Upon completion of 21 weeks of pre-clinical studies at NDSSS and 25 weeks of affiliated training at area hospitals, eighty-four practical nursing students were ready for their diplomas. The graduation ceremony was held Friday. April 15. 1983 at 1:30 p.m. in the Activities Center The commencement address was delivered by Mike Callahan. Vice-President of St. John's Hospital. Forgo. Dr. Ronald Hutkin. Vice-President of Academic Affairs, presented pins to the graduates and certificates were presented by Mr. Hanson. Music was provided by the NDSSS Department of Music under the direction of Tilford Kroshus. 26 Nuses Graduation Fall Registration was held August 30 through September 2. 1983. Enrollment at NDSSS totaled 3,171 full-time students. This figure reflects a slight decline that is in line with the large reduction of high school graduates in the state. Registration by division lists 964 in the Business Division, 955 in the Trades Division. 717 in the Technical Division and 535 in the Arts and Science Division. State School of Science freshman Kevin Gieszier became all-conference NDCAC. tying for 5th place. Owen Jensen's cross country teams finished a successful season with the Women's team capturing 3rd in Region XIII. and the Men finishing 4th. Men also captured 5th in the NDCAC conference meet at Minot. Wildcat football had a tougher season this year, winning only one of their eight game season. The Lady Wildcat volleybai team had an up and down season due to competition with tougher four-yeor schools and junior colleges. However, the girls played ike a machine during tournaments. Coach Grage is already looking forward to the 1984 season, as she has the makings of a mature and experienced team. The wrestling team found its mid-season form as it took 5th place in a 16-team tournament at Coon Rapids. Minn.
