MILLER CAMPUS LIFE There are 3047 of us ihis year more than ever before. 2170 of us trekked down here for registration on September 1st. to become a slate-wide, record breaking freshman class, and the rest of us wandered in between then and classes on the 7th. With the registration hassle behind us. and our money too. we plunged into classes. The familiar drag (all too familiar because we came expecting a new world and ended up in the old high school environment) started. For most of us the time went so fast that we didn’t know what hit when the fall midterms rolled around. But even long before that, we were comfortably at home. Not a one of us felt like a freshman . . . or a senior: here in a two year college we’re all more like sophomores and juniors. Homecoming was the first “big thing if you can call it that. For the first time since school started we all stuck around for a weekend and made it to the one Cal game that most of us would see. After that things really settled down to dull. The few of us who lived too far away to make it home on weekends soon found new stomping grounds at White Rock and New Effington. The rest of us lived out of suitcases the entire year ... to school, home, to school, home, school, home . Sticking around wouldn't have accomplished much. Somehow we made it through the long dead winter and the slow, slow spring, and then there were spring quarter finals and graduation just one more thing in the way of going home for most of us and we were out! tfS i {i V. Chairs were passed out and the kids danced and crowed till finally, in exasperation the band said Goodbye, children. and walked off. Did we want them back? Yes. The students settled down and the concert resumed. Great! And of course, the Queen. A week and a half of frantic campaigning Coronation rolls around, and on Thursday night a full gyni sits in dark anticipation. The lights conic up. and with them, the cry Helen! Oh yeah, also Lee Swed-berg for a couple coffee houses, and some dances. But Mason Proffit they were great. It didn't look good for a while when they started: they were supposed to perform in the stadium and had to use the gym instead, so the place was packed and a lot of kids ended up silling on the floor and raising a ruckus. The band which really plays some beautiful music, as well as trucking, got fed up with that in short order and walked off. We got them back though, and the rest was great. To date, not an exciting season. 71 Cross country is an individual sport where you can work to improve yourself. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to come into the chute knowing I put forth the best possible effort and ran well. I am trying mainly to prove to myself I’m a belter runner than myself and everyone else thinks. While running in practice and during the off season I think of how hard I must run to achieve my objectives that lie ahead in the upcoming season. It’s frustrating and more work than fun at moments, especially in the winter when the subzero weather gnaws away at your face and your body can’t move, but a sense of inner pride keeps you moving. Everyone has goals in life and thev strive for what they want. I STRIVE l-’OR EXCELLENCE IN RUNNING. National Conference Championships. Collegatc records. and ultimately the dream of making the Olympics. Even if I don’t reach them I'll have tried and done the best job possible. Scott Sundquist I run for pleasure and a self-satisfaction. I can best represent my school by my running than by any other sport. I enjoy the lough practice and even tougher meets. It gives me the satisfaction of knowing I can hang in there when the going gets rough. I’ve never given up and quit in a workout. During practices and races 1 THINK ABOUT THE RACE. USUALLY HOW TO BEAT THE OTHER GUY MENTALLY AS WELL AS PHYSICALLY, also about a girl in Fargo: this fires me up. I love to run in cold, wet weather, preferably snow! I feel we have the potential here at SSS to have a great cross country and track team. Jon Gossett I like cross country because of it’s competition and it builds me up both physically and mentally ... I GO OUT FOR CROSS COUNTRY BECAUSE I LOVE TO RUN. I’ve been out for cross country since 8th grade. Although it was a lot of hard work. I got a feeling that I accomplished something. When I'rn out there running I am trying to prove to myself that I am just as good as any runner in the field. The thing that keeps me going through long hours is the fact that it will pay off in the long run. When I’m running in a long distance race I start singing to myself and depending on the beat of the song is whether I run at a fast pace or not. Then, when I start getting tired I worry about the guy behind me and not let him pass me. DaveChilko I’m out for cross country because I like running under competition. While running in meets and in practice I think mostly of the team, how I’m a part of the team, and the better I run in meets and the more I train in practice, the more it will benefit the SSS team and it's cross country reputation. When I gel tired in a race. I mostly think of the finish line, but I ALSO THINK OF A RESPECTABLE FINISH FOR MY OWN SATISFACTION. My goal in cross country is to get timed goals. All-American honors, and. of course, every runners dream, to try and make the Olympics. Michael Francis I like cross country because it is a sell' determination sport. You have to motivate yourself to run. Coaches can teach you how to run better or improve but you have to have the motivation to run well. This is true in Other sports also. I stay in it because I am proving to myself that I can do it. I like reaching goals and trying for the ones I haven't reached. My true goal is becoming the best athlete I can be. It's a wonderful feeling to win and a soul-searching feeling when you lose. I think running builds you both mentally and physically. Kevin Petersen I’m out for cross country because I like running under competition. While running in meets and in practice think mostly of the team, how I'm a part of the team and the better I run in meets and the more 1 train in practice, the more it will benefit the SSS team and its cross country reputation. When I get tired in a race. I mostly think of the finish line, but I also think of a respectable finish for my own satisfaction. My goal in cross-country is to get timed goals, get all-American honors, and of course, every runner's dream, to try and make the Olympics. Michael Iruncis Cross-country is an individual sport. he more you run. the better you'll come out in the end. I enjoyed the isolation to a great extent. It's fun just to go and run. without a lot of extra ideas to carry around. During a race I usually try and concentrate on keeping up with someone who runs about my speed of race. Tom Simmer ►North Dakota Stale School of Science Cross Country coach NVes An-drud coached a youthful Wildcat team to what could he termed a successful season. With six freshmen and one sophomore comprising the team, they competed against much more seasoned runners from four-year colleges and universities from five stales and Canada. Selected the most valuable runner and 1972 team captain, was Scott Sundquist. Duluth. MN: most improved. Kevin Petersen. Luverne, 1 N: and the hardest worker. Dennis Kamlo. West Fargo. Others on the team were DavcChilko. Inver Grove Heights. MN: John Gossett. Jamestown: Tom Simmer. Wahpcton: and Mike Francis. Austin. MN. The Wildcat runners won the Rochester Dual with 15 points, the Jamestown Invitational with 26 points, the Concordia Dual with 15. the NDSSS Invitational with 15 points, and the North Dakota Junior College meet with 22 points. The NDSSS runners also finished second in the University of North Dakota Invitational with 67 points, in the NDCAC meet with 45 points, and in the Region 13 meet with 44 points. The State School of Science was rated number one in the junior college athletic regions of 2.11.13.14. and 16. The Team ran in the region 13 meet with Gossett out and Francis running on a sprained ankle. They placed second and qualified the team for the National Junior College meet; However, they were unable to attend this meet. An enthusiastic response to the intramural program this year made it a very successful and interesting one. In the football intramurals Wayne I anl 's Screaming Vellow Zonkcrs beat the Head Corps of (iil Koet le for the Chant-ionshipof 15 teams. Asked how he would feel should he leave NDSSS he replied, “every man has his time and place to fulfill a useful role and he should not try to extend it too long. I le should sense when his challenge is filled and then move on to another useful role. The important thing is that Dr. Blikrc wishes to do as much as he can for the good of this institution. We want the world to see us. he said in one school address. meaning that SSS has made a mark, is well-known and nationally recognized. The enrollment continually increases and the employer is aware of the State School of Science: but the student must also prepare so that he will represent the college and himself well. His chief concern is that the college will be able to provide the means to provide a realtive education for those who deserve it. The basic limitation is funds. “Our hope. he says, is to give the young adults of today, raised in an affluent society, the guidance, direction and training to prepare them for the realities. Directing a college today is a complex job. and the feelings and responsibilities carried with it are intricate, but there is no doubt that Clair Blikre is a man who meets this challenge. The track, field, and stadium were built almost entirely by donations of interested athletic-minded alumni who have developed the facility into one in which much pride is taken. The all-weather track received a lot of use in its inaugural year. Several high school and college meets were held on the eight lane track. Favorable reports were expressed by the athletes who competed on the second all-weather track in the state. In addition to the track, several thousand dollars was spent on equipment and supplies to add some of the best for the athletes who compete at NDSSS. An example of the cooperation in this project was the portable pole vault pit made by Hilding Johnson and Robert Goroski of the Auto Body Repair Department. The pit. designed after the model used in the Olympics, was built of stronger material at a savings of SI.000 to the college. The highlight of the 1970 track season was winning the North Dakota Junior College meet and the second place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIII meet. Many good performances were contributed by the members of the team. Perhaps the most outstanding performance was that of Randy Hucthcr of Lisbon who established 19 combined indoor and outdoor records to lead the team with 21416 points for his sophomore season. In addition to invitational, district and conference high school meets scheduled on the track this spring, the State School of Science will also host the NDCAC meet in addition to other college meets planned for the busy spring of 1972 on Frank Vcrlin Field. You might say there is no rest for us (especially for and annual editor) and you would be right, for finishing one task or one life, is just the beginning of another, and thank Heaven for that.
