Their responsibility is a heavy one, The past fifty years have seen extraordinary complica- tions: two World Wars, the Great Depression, chronic international tensions, the onset of the Atomic Age, and Viet Nam. Students have beencompelled over and over again to make re-adjustments, and teachers have been called on with increasing urgency to distinguish between the permanent and the transitory, I hope that the years spent here at North Cove will help students know themselves and theirworld better than before, and that it will make clear to them the wisdom that lies beyond knowledge. The collection of events found in this, the last volume of the Conasoga, will help in determining the permanent from the transitory. From the time she first joined the faculty, she seemed a part of North Cove - sharing our joys and sorrows and trying with all her mightto build character, along with vocabulary, in her students. She was a fun-loving, humorous, and understanding person who rebuked unkind comments with a simple how ugly. We will always remember Mrs. Julia Arnold and the friendship and guidance she brought 4 us and will ever cherish the fond memories of the years she spent with us at North Cove. 28 County Administration Mr. Culver Dale (Superintendent) Mr. James E, Johnson Mrs, Colon Wright Mr, Joe Swann Dr, Verna Bergemann Annual Staff EDITOR IN CHIEF JANET WARD BUSINESS MANAGER = = ------ --- 2-52-55 - ee eee eee JANET WARD LITERARY EDITOR - -------------8-------+------- GRACE GREENLEE FEATURES EDITOR=----------- 9-252 5-2-2 eee eres MARTY CHILDERS LAYOUT AND = ------- 5-8 ee ee eee ee ee ee ee eee JEAN GRINDST AFF COPY EDITORS ADVISOR ODELLA CARPENTER LARRY B, WALL 29 30 Mr. and Miss North Cove Jeanne Grindstaff Thomas Good 31 SARAH JOHNSON JANET WARD JEAN GRINDSTAFF - NORTH COVE ELEMENTARY a=z=o=—7a Oo 32 ODELLA CARPENTER THOMAS GOOD JANIE GOOD a= O=- 7D OD FD THOMAS GOOD 1970 Marshalls SARAH JOHNSON JANET WARD FRANCES McCALL Pome e My a , % 7 4 ) @ 33 ODELLA CARPENTER BECKY DUNCAN 34 BOBBY DUNCAN JOHN EDWARDS 36 THOMAS GOOD JANIE GOOD toy by al no Q Az i= 1) a a Let CATHY HUSKINS JANET WARD a e) 2) a am) ie) 2 my a x= w VALORIE WASHBURN JANET BOONE Mascots MARK NANNEY 39 42 asz=OoO=— 7 Grace Greenlee Wanda Edwards Carolyn Stevens Linda Carmney Martha Childers azo = 7 = j ie a Decisions, Decisions Future Homemaker -1971- Concentration 43 Brenda Bartlett | t Linda Carmney a Martha Childers Diane Edwards Wanda Edwards Peter Garaventa Grace Greenlee Dianne Hennessee Ann Holder Bobby R, Hollifield Sam Hollifield Marlene Johnson 45 46 Stanley Jordan Patricia McCall Sonja Mills Pam Mitchell Carolyn Stevens Ronnie Stevens noz=ozsroza7 VO® Mike Quinn Robin Sneed David McKinney Gloria Biddix ”AD=z=OS Oy, VIO 47 48 Roger Andrews Doug Bassett Gloria Biddix Ted Biddix Wanda Biddix Rhonda Boone Donna Braswell 49 50 Frank Burleson Maxine Clark Sheila Dean Donna Duncan Steve Durham Deanna Good Mike Hall Kathy Hennessee Bobby D, Hollifield Jimmy Lowery Geneva McCall Marilyn Swofford David McKinney Ruth Ward Nina McKinney Teresa Washburn Mike Quinn Zola Wiseman Darlene Hollifield Rita Mahan Robin Sneed Joanne Wood 52 ,oS ZT COT TN Nancy Hollifield John Childers Ricky Broome and Hot Dog Cheryl McCall Kenneth Jordan 50 5 SO 0 = TI Come Alive!!! A year before, fire had consumed the two room school house at Pitts and a delegation of consolidation of the Woodlawn, Pitts, Peppers Creek, Ashford, Cox Creek, and Armstrong schools met with the Board of Education. Action was prompt and in 1923 the board appointed three men to select the sight for the new school, The committee was composed of Frank A. Edmunson, Superintendent of Avery County Schools, W. R. Hill, Superintendent of Rutherford County Schools, and G. B. Strickland, Superintendent of Old Fort School, They selected a sight in the North Cove area and purchased the land for the building, Later three and a half adjoining acres were purchased as grounds for athletics activities. The first principal of North Cove was G. Watson Wilson, Thomas Stacy, Jr. was the assistant principal and basketball coach, There were four elementary teachers: Hattie Taylor, Alda En- glish, Bertha Morris, and Beatrice Brown. The Junior High grades were taught by Thomas Stacy, Jr. and G, Watson Wilson was teacher for the High School grades, Teachers held classes in six of the seven available classrooms. The other classroom, situated behind the auditorium, was not occupied during the early years of operation, Total enrollment for all grades was from one hun- dred twenty-five to one hundred fifty students. 83 84 Transportation was provided for the students, This consisted of three buses driven by faculty. The students in the Honeycutt area were transported by a horse-drawn wagon driven by a student, Alvin Wiseman who now resides at Pleasant Gardens. In 1937 three rooms were added to the original building and a gym was built in 1953. Library and science equipment was first pur- chased in 1941 and in the same year the school became standarized and accredited. Athletics has always been impor- tant at North Cove. Facilities were scarce, so the team used an old pack- ing house in the Ashford section for practice and games, Electricity was not available and the games were played by the light of gas lanterns, There were also several outdoor courts on the school grounds. One was situated near the creek bank, another was just west of the school house and a third, which wasset up later, was located near the present paved road leading to the school. The earliest boys' basketball teams consisted of Otis Lonon, Finley Lonon, Guy A. Lonon, Guy W. Lonon, Joe A. Carpenter, Russel Graig, Harlan Graig, Perry Green, Ward Green, Craig Bristol, Guy McCall, Horace McCall, Jack Swofford, Lloyd Swofford, Clyde Bates, Harry Swofford, Walter Harrison, Jack Boyd, Glenn Swofford, Hugh McCall, Roy Smoot and Theo Hollifield among others. These first teams produced an all-conference player, Finley Lonon., There was very little girls' basket- ball in the early years of the school even though there was an organized team. The earliest girl basketball players included Jessie Washburn, Pearl Washburn, Willie Belle Reeves, Dorthula Denny, Pheebee Daniels, Ellen Holtsclaw, Faye McGee, May Wiseman, UlnaLonon, and Faye McCall. Baseball games were mainly just neighborhood get-togethers with the primary object that of having a good time. Track and field events were held in much the same way. Everybody had a good time and the fun was free for all to enjoy. That same spirit has always characterized the stu- dents and faculty as well as the players themselves at a North Cove Game. 85 86 Fred Abernathy Louise Abernathy William Adams J. E.
