Dean Jordan Senior Class Poem LITTLE THINGS It takes a little muscle, it takes a little grit, A little true ambition with a little bit of wit. It's not the biggest things that count, and make the biggest showg It's the little things that people do, that make this old world go. A little bit of smiling, and a little sunny chat, A little bit of courage to a comrade slipping back. It takes a kindly action, and it takes a word of cheer, To fill a life with sunshine, and to drive away a tear. Great things are not the biggest things that make the biggest show: It's the little things that people do, that make this old world go. - -Author Unknown Mascots 'HW' 439' DAVID GOINS ---------- LINDA SUE CLARK Class History When the school bell rang at Old North Cove High in 1941, there at the door stood five nervous little tots. Yes, there were more, but the outstanding ones were: Bubbles Goode, Helen Hensley, Doris Ward, Buddy McKinney, and Dean Jordan. We made friends and stuck together through the primary and high first grade. When we came back in 1943 ready to enter the second grade, we found in our midst a little redheaded scared-stiff'boy, This was none other than Donald Hennessee. Then came the third grade where Wayne McCall joined us. This year we had an easy time. Carroll Hoilman joined us in the fourth grade and Charlynn Goins walked into our little group after Christmas. The fifth and sixth grades were completed without any interruptions and then fate dealt a terrible blow. For in the top of the seventh, Tommy Brown slid in. Here we began losing some of our classmates, not the better half though. Anyway we drifted through the eighth grade. Our first year in high school. Oh! What a thrill. We then had twenty-four in our class. Hubert Burleson joined us in the ninth grade. Nice Surprises Come In Small Packages. ln the tenth grade we lost all of our classmates but thirteen, an unlucky number, Maybe it was unlucky because we lost two more in the eleventh. There were eleven of us left. This was the year we will never forget. We received our class rings and had our Junior-Senior Banquet. At last we are members of the Senior Class of 1954 and are doing fine with the help of our class officers who are: President, Buddy McKinney, Vice-President, Helen Hensley: Secretary, Charlynn Goinsg Treasurer, Donald Hennesseeg Reporter, Dean Jordan. We have now reached the goal which we have struggled and toiled for twelve long and strenuous years. We, Don I-Iennessee and Tommy Brown, do hereby leave our place in physics class to John English and Gordon Hensley, and we hope Mr. Johnson won't throw his physics book away. I, Carroll Hoilman, do hereby leave my wolfish ways to Rod Brown and I guess he can see. I, Wayne McCall, leave my school bus to some good safe driver. I, Bubbles Goode, leave my telephone calls to anyone who can af- ford to make them. I, Hubert Burleson, do hereby leave my quiet ways to Joe Swofford and hope it helps him get along better in this world, 1, Doris Ward, do hereby leave my ability to write letters to Pansy Hollifield and hope she gets her man. I, Helen Hensley, do hereby leave my ability to laugh softly to Shirley Harris and hope it keeps her out of trouble. I, Buddy McKinney, leave my ability to get along with Mrs. Glovier to Junior Ayers. I, Dean Jordan, leave my height to Joe Swofford and hope he suc- ceeds. We do leave to all our beloved teachers and superiors lasting and heartfelt peace now and forever after. Seriously, we are thanking them for all the hardships and trials they have gone through in helping us achieve our goal, a high school diploma. And we, as Seniors at last, leave the Senior privileges to the Seniors of 1955, and hope they get more of them than we did. Class Prophecy As I look into the crystal ball into the future in 1964, I see the same eleven Seniors. They have changed quite a bit, but not beyond recogni- tion. I looked, and I saw, and I heard about this wonderful class. First I saw a well dressed secretary and guess who it was? Well, it was none other than Doris Ward. Gee! What do I see? An airplane. Yes, and who is this good looking hostess? Of all people, Charlynn Goins. Gosh! Who is this I see now? A head nurse, and is she giving orders. It is Helen Hensley and she surely has done well for herself. And who is this I see here? A lawyer, and 'is she dignified. It is none other than Bubbles Goode. Oh! my goodness, who are these children I see running around? They look like little birds to me. Oh! here comes their father, and it is Dean Jordan. Whom do I see here, a college professor? Yes, and it is Tommy Brown. He is teaching at N. C. State. Boy, what a career. Look at this captain coming this way. He is small in height but high in rank. It is Hubert Burleson. Who is this? Why of all people, Buddy McKinney, a baseball coach, and he has a big team, The New York Yankees. Gosh! This couldn't be true. Wayne McCall, a schoolteacher He seems to be enjoying his work. Oh! here we are at Madison Square Garden and who is this in the ring? A champion, and it is Carroll Hoilman. Oh! what a headache, I must be taking the flu. I know what I will dog I will go to see Dr, Donald Hennessee. I know he is busy with all his patients, but you know Donald, he can always find time to talk to an old friend. Under the leadership of our class officers, every thing has run smoothly and class spirit has developed. Many members of our class belong to the basketball teams and to various clubs such as the F. H. A. , the 4-H, and the Pep Club. The Juniors are looking forward with pleasure to their Senior year and graduation. The cheer leader was Margie Harris. Most of the girls belong to F. H. A. Club. They are Patty Lonon, Margie Harris, Rosetta Harris, and Shirley Cline. The 4-H members are Kateria Stevens, Virginia Helton, Shirley Cline, and Glen Boyd. The class would like to congratulate Mr. Johnson in making the year a very successful one.
