A SHORT HISTORY North Collins was actually born in 1808 when three Quaker families. those of Stephen Sisson, Enos Southwick and Abram Tucker, moved into the area from New England. At this time this section was a part of the town of Concord. In 1832 the town of Collins was separated from Concord and included what is now North Collins. In 1852 a new town was formed from Collins, called Shirley for the first year. The name was changed in 1853 by an Act of Legislature to North Collins. The first town meeting was held early in 1853, with Edwin W. Godfrey, the first supervisor from 1853-55. Other settlers soon followed and the hamlets of Lawtons. Shirley and New Oregon devloped. The village of North Collins was incorporated in 1911, with Cortes B. Horton, its first mayor, 1911-13. The town of North Collins has always been a rich farming area but since early in this century much of it has been devoted to the growing of small fruits and truck vegetables. As a result there are today three busy canning plants in the town, two in the village of North Collins, the third in Lawtons. North Collins has become one of the greatest small fruit growing areas in the United States. Through the years the village of North Collins has been improved and modern facilities added. The railroad was built through the village in 1872, the first telephone was installed about 1904, natural gas was first piped into the area about 1895. A water pumping station was established in 1916, since enlarged and modernized, electricity was installed in 1919. About this time, also, the old board sidewalks were replaced with cement ones and the streets were widened and paved. The first sewer was established in 1897, replaced in 1939 by a larger system. This has also been enlarged now to meer the needs of a steadily growing community. The first log school was erected in North Collins about 1813 on the corner of Main and Kim- ble Avenue. On Main and School Streets a two- room, frame building was built in 1835. This was replaced in 1883 by a larger building, again replaced in 1899 by a brick structure. This school was burned on April 1, 1935 and the present dedicated June 10. 1937 with a later addition in 1952. The first church came to North Collins in june, 1818-a Congregational Church attended in the beginning by only the members of one family, that of john Stanclift, who exchanged the lot occupied by the present Congregational Church for a grant further along School Street given by the Holland Land Company. A Methodist Church was built in 1848, later sold to the Congregationalists. The building was moved and is now Pilgrim Hall. St. john's Roman Catholic Church was organ- ized in 1904, Sacred Heart in 1907. Both are today a part of Holy Spirit parish. Today good roads have been built throughout and there is adequate fire protection in each com- munity. The village volunteer fire department was organized in 1898, those of Lawtons, Langford and New Oregon within the last decade. Ethelyn Weller North Collins, N.Y. An Early Scene
