Through this promised theme, we, the staff, hope to bring to the foreground the industries of North Collins and its environs. Each year, the Reverie shall be dedicated to one particular phase of all local industries. 3 Editors Left to Right: Wendy Orinsby, Pbotographicf john George, Arif Sally Castiglia, Edimr: Judy Tower, Co-Ea'imr.' November 24, 1958 Dear Readers, In order to bring the school and community into closer relationship, we plan to dedicate the yearbook to a different phase of community life each ensuing year. This year the R everie is dedicated to the strawberry growers and producers, an important phase in the progress of our community. Next year it will be an equally important industry. We would like to thank the year-book staff and all those who helped us with their cooperation in this project. It is a. pleasure to present to you the 1959 Reverie , a symbol of cooperation and progress in our growing community. Sincerely, Sally Ann Castiglia, Editor. 4 7 A 0 4 0 0 fl fl ll A lx 0 P ll 'I 7 7 The dedication this year is to the Growers, Proces- sors, and Marketers of the delicious, red, luscious straw- berry. Few of us realized at that time, that many of our new acquaintances would be progressing with us through the twelve years of education ahead. Little did we know, that both joy and sadness were to be our lot, as it is in all human endeavor. During our first six years of schooling, we not only learned the basic rules of education, but also the value of responsibility and friendship. As we entered Junior High School, we were faced with the responsibility of voting for the following officers to guide us through the year: President, Ronald Geiger, Vice-President, David Aeschbackerg Secretary-Treasurer, Sally Ann Castiglia. Our Student Council representatives were Susan Warnes and Ralph Gruppo. With the help of Miss Potter and Miss Hubbard, we concluded a very successful 7th Grade year. Eighth Grade brought us near the threshold of High School. Our homeroom teachers for this year were Miss Korthals and Mr. Provenzo. Our officers were: President, Catherine Noecker, Vice-President, John Abramog Secretary-Treasurer, Catherine Bucco, and Pat Dillingham and Ralph Gruppo were Stu- dent Council representatives. At the close of our 8th Grade year we were ready for High School. Under the supervision of Mrs. Burke and Mr. Brooker, we started our high school careers in Sep- tember, 1955. Elected to office were: President, Judy Feltz, Vice-President, Bob Jeswaldg Secretary, Sam Markello, and Treasurer, Beatrice Canale. Student Council representatives were Sally Ann Castiglia and Ralph Gruppo. Our first real money making project was a Harvest Dance. Now we were well established on our way through High School. Under the able leadership of Larry Geiger and his staff, John Alessi, Vice-President, Pat Dilling- ham, Secretary, Elaine Fricano, Treasurer, Margaret Thill and Sam Markello as Student Council repre- sentatives, we continued on our pathway to learning. The outstanding events of that year were a square dance and a cupcake sale. Miss Van Dyke and Mr. Delaney supervised our activities successfully. With the assistance of Mr. Provenzo, our home- room teacher, John Alessi, President, Larry Geiger, Vice-President, Elaine Fricano, Secretary, and Sam Markello, Treasurer, we successfully accomplished a magazine sale, fudge and cupcake sale, Junior Jamboree, Junior Whirl, and a profitable light bulb sale. Those elected as our Student Council represent- atives were Margaret Thill and Ralph Gruppo. The outstanding event of the year was our prom, The Mardi Gras. Mary Ellen Schmitz was chosen as queen, Judy Feltz and Doris Simmons as her attend- ants. In the fall of '58, we reached the climax of our twelve years of study. This year with Mr. Valone as our advisor, we felt more responsibility in the elec- tion of our class officers: President, Larry Geiger, Vice-President, John Alessi, Secretary, Pat Dilling- ham, and Treasurer, Ralph Gruppo, Student Council representatives were Mary Ellen Schmitz and Sam Markello. The Senior Play, held December 5, 1958, entitled, Susan Steps Out, our Wfashington Trip, and our fudge and cupcake sales were all a part of our last year at North Collins Central. Now we all await one of the most significant events of our lives, which will be our stepping stone to a new world. Yes, this is graduation, which will mean the facing of new and exciting experiences on our own. Written by, Margaret Thill Mary Ellen Schmitz Pat Dillingham 22- .-,4, i,.-,-- Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1959, being of sound mind, do publish this our last will and testament. To the Freshmen we bequeath our school spirit and exuberance. To the Sophomores we will the best of luck and success in your highschool years. John Abramo leaves his curly hair to Douglas Lietz and Chuck Schmitz. Boys, there won't be any need for those brush cuts now. Katherine Adam leaves her ability to under- stand boys to Rosella Valone and Kathy Hunter. They're not really hard to understand as you prob- ably already know. To Robert Hammond, Larry Geiger and John Alessi leave their love for feminine interest. Veronica Briggs leaves her participation in class affairs to Mary Jane Nicosia. Veronica's co-opera- tion was always an asset to her class. To Sharon Botko, Katherine Bucco wills her ability to manage the Green and Gold successfully. We trust you will follow in her footsteps. Janice Burke wills her self-contained and sincere attitude to Judy Whaley and Judy Tower Beatrice Canale leaves to Susan Warnes her ability to be a IO o'clock scholar, Please, Susan try not to rush in the door taking the pins out of your hair. To Wendy Ormsby, Sally Ann Castiglia leaves her ability to confuse Mr. Johengeng but be careful Wendy, you yourself may become confused. Claudia Decker wills her ability to talk on any subject, whether she knows anything about it or not, to Mary Jane Vacco. We know that Mary Jane has already given you some tough competition. Patricia Dillingham, Elaine Fricano and Marga- ret Thill leave their secretarial ability to June Munson and Dolores Hrib. We think that they will be able to keep any office jolly. To the Junior Class, Judy Feltz wills her bub- bling personality. We are sure it will help to make your Senior Year a successful one. Carole Glow bequeaths her bashfulness to Anita Herman. It can be an asset when used at the right times. Ralph Gmppo leaves his love for teasing the girls to David Leone. You'll find it is lots of fun David. Susan Hurd leaves her chemistry book and her love for the subject to any Junior who feels like tackling it. We hope the tackle brings you a touch down. To Edward Koch, Dale Buel and Steven Hussey, Robert Jeswald leaves his slapstick comedy. It certainly made some boring classes very amusing. Sylvia LaFave, Carmella Noto and Carsyle Tripi leave their friendly manner to Sandra Galloway, Barbara Congdon and Caroline Eppolito. It is a quality worth having. Martha Landgraff wills her fortitude to Marilyn Lawton. You'll be able to use it in your science courses. To Paul Munson, Sam Markello leaves his abil- ity to take the situation in hand. Fred Miller leaves his ability in shop to Paul Renaldo, Valentine Debecki and David Wittmeyer. Make good use of it boys. Barbara Milius leaves her ability to be seen and not heard to Barbara Briggs. Barbara, this can be quite helpful. Dick O'Boyle leaves his discharge papers from N.C.C.S. to Donald Rizzo, Robert Forster and Herbert Koch. Don't be too anxious boys. Curtis Paine leaves his height to Peter Castiglia and Robert Andolino. Keep growing boys. William Roth leaves his gentlemanly ways to Tom Marx and Wayne Brock. A gentleman is al- ways appreciated. To Bonnie Cerne and Mary Jane Padalino, Joan Schillace leaves her sense of humor. It will bring you through many trying times. Patricia Schmitt wills to Diane Ognibene, her ability to make you think she is a very quiet person, but still water runs deep. Mary Ellen Schmitz leaves her love for cowboy music to Nancy Geiger. Doris Simmons and Katherine Wood will to Josephine Gawlak and Patricia Giesler their endur- ing friendship. Agnes Smith gives her blonde hair to Carol Geiger. Remember Carol, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. To John George and Jean Azeez, the Senior Class wills any artistic ability that we may possess. You already have a good share. Marcia Winter and Olivia William will to Madeline Conti and Joan Webb their infectious giggle. David Wagners voracious appetite is his gift to Ronald Marsh. Eat well, Ronald. Class Prophecy The year is 1979 and as I was getting ready for bed one night I picked up the evening paper. I was surprised to see that many of the articles contained the names of my former class- mates. Here it is twenty years after my graduation and my old friends are already on the ladder of fame. The headlines read: MARS YANKS BEAT PLUTONIAN BRAVES There has been much celebrating on Mars today for the Yanks have just taken the Universal Series. Bob Jeswald won a hard pitching duel over the Plutonian Braves' star player, Curtis Payne. At the end of the last inning Elaine Fricano, Yankee Manager, congratulated her terrific pitcher with a kiss. Judy Feltz, manager of the Braves had no reason to feel ashamedg her Plutonian team put up a magnificent fight and lost only in the ninth inning with a score of 1 - 0. MOONSIDE PAVILION HAS GRAND OPENING Last night the Moonside Pavilion had their grand opening. Margaret Thill, owner of the huge square dance hall highlighted the evening with the well-known Moonshine Rangers. Dave Wagner, John Abramo, and john Alessi accompanied the caller, Joan Schillace. Dave, who always had a wonderful sense of humor had the crowds rolling in laughter at his jokes. STARS SHINE OUT ON SATURN Last night on Saturn, Olivia Williams astounded the critics with her magnificent roll in. Come Back Little Sputnick. It is a story of the destruction of Earth and how two people faced those terrible times. Miss Williams showed her great acting abil- ity especially in the love scene with Paul Faubert who is a new Hollywood sensation. Paul's last picture, which also was a huge success was Lost in Space in which he co-starred with Brigitte Bardot. Paul's French came in handy for they have been seen together at many of the nightclubs on the Milkyway. TO PUT FUN IN YOUR LIFE TRY DANCING Janice Burke, Sylvia LaFave and Agnes Smith have taken over Arthur Murray's Dancing Academy. On their Saturday night show they featured Ralph Gruppo, the newest Rock and Roll sensation of the Universe. His new Long Hair style of music r ly has the teenagers shook up. PROBLEM COLUMN In the paper I read that Cathy Bucco had replaced Ann Landers. A 'typical problem that she had been presented with was from her old classmate Carmella Noto, who is now mother of three. She asked how to find a good babysitter. Miss Noto referrfd hqngio Carsyle Tcipi and Pat Schmitz who run a baby sitting agency. Pat and Carsyle are both doing quite well for themselves as each has been married for 10 years. Pat has two darling daughters and Carsyle recently surprised the medical profession when she gave birth to five very healthy quintuplets. GEIGER'S POOL HALL RAIDED BY SPACE RANGERS Last night at 11:15 Sergeant Kathlyn Adams of the Space Rangers led a raid on Lawrence Geiger's Pool Hall. When asked to make a statement Lawrence said he would leave every- thing up to his famous criminal lawyer Bea Canale. Larry was arrested on suspicion of running a Space Race Bookie Agency. IArry's love for pool is really going to send him places. We can rest assured, however, that he is in good hands for Miss Canale has never lost a case - yet. MISSIONARIES RETURN HOME Marth Langraff and Doris Simmons have recently returned home from a newly found planet. They have been doing a great job converting these backward people and one which they may well be proud of. Their friendly personalities and initiative which I remember them to have had in high school surely have been ri.. , ea-fe 1 . f ' g,,,r 4.4 ..n,-.. RED STYLES NEW HAIRDOES I also happened to notice an ad for Veronica Briggs' Beauty Salon. She was featuring her new coiffures and Claudia Decker modeled them. We- always knew her red hair would help her later on. It has too, for she is now married to Tab Hunter who is her fifth husband. It seems modeling isn't her only interest. WANTED BY THE H.E.B. Pat Dillingham, Cathy Wood, and Mary Ellen Schmitz have replaced the McGuirre sisters. Their charm has led to their suc- cess. Their good looks must have surely helped them too for they are on the list of most wanted Hollywood stars. This list is made up by the H.E.B. club which stands for Hollywood's Eligible Bachelors. NEW GROWTH HORMONE DISCOVERED In the field of science Sally Ann Castiglia has discovered a new growth hormone. By accident Sally took an overdose of this and is now six feet tall. Her associate Susan Hurd has developed a new kiss proof lipstick. Dick O'Boyle and Fred Miller have volunteered to test this new product. Their work is made more fun by their co- workers Carole Glow and Sandra Seely. NEW SPEED RECORD SET Sam Markello, engineer, has just completed the century's biggest project-a transatlantic bridge. Bill Roth, in a new Neptunian Sports Car, broke all speed records on crossing the Atlantic by using this bridge. He completed the journey in four hours. Pretty good, Bill. MARCIA WINTER, FAMOUS OBSTETRICIAN Barbara Milius has become the new headnurse at the Inter- stellar Emergency Hospital. This is the same hospital that the famous backhand slap that has brought a record breaking num- ber of children into the world. FAMOUS AUTHOR ONCE TEACHER I was quite surprised that our old senior advisor has also made quite a name for himself in these last twenty years. This is how the paper read: Mr. Joseph Valone who at one time was a teacher on the planet earth, has published his new book A Forgotten Art- The Hula Hoop. In his book the author has used many pictures of himself illustrating the techique required to twirl a hoop. In 1960 Mr. Valone gave up teaching and took to writing. His talents are many, and his books all are on the best seller list. His last one was Simplified Use of the IBM Machines for first graders. These new machines, thanks to modern science, have done away with homework and almost every student has a port- able one of his own. After reading the paper I was able to rest contented knowing that our class had made the Universe a better place to live. I am sure that everyone feels the same as I do that North Collins Central, the school that we attended so many years ago, had help- ed to give us the background with which we went on to conquer new horizons. A SHORT HISTORY North Collins was actually born in 1808 when three Quaker families. those of Stephen Sisson, Enos Southwick and Abram Tucker, moved into the area from New England. At this time this section was a part of the town of Concord. In 1832 the town of Collins was separated from Concord and included what is now North Collins. In 1852 a new town was formed from Collins, called Shirley for the first year. The name was changed in 1853 by an Act of Legislature to North Collins. The first town meeting was held early in 1853, with Edwin W. Godfrey, the first supervisor from 1853-55. Other settlers soon followed and the hamlets of Lawtons. Shirley and New Oregon devloped. The village of North Collins was incorporated in 1911, with Cortes B. Horton, its first mayor, 1911-13. The town of North Collins has always been a rich farming area but since early in this century much of it has been devoted to the growing of small fruits and truck vegetables. As a result there are today three busy canning plants in the town, two in the village of North Collins, the third in Lawtons. North Collins has become one of the greatest small fruit growing areas in the United States. Through the years the village of North Collins has been improved and modern facilities added. The railroad was built through the village in 1872, the first telephone was installed about 1904, natural gas was first piped into the area about 1895. A water pumping station was established in 1916, since enlarged and modernized, electricity was installed in 1919. About this time, also, the old board sidewalks were replaced with cement ones and the streets were widened and paved. The first sewer was established in 1897, replaced in 1939 by a larger system. This has also been enlarged now to meer the needs of a steadily growing community. The first log school was erected in North Collins about 1813 on the corner of Main and Kim- ble Avenue. On Main and School Streets a two- room, frame building was built in 1835. This was replaced in 1883 by a larger building, again replaced in 1899 by a brick structure. This school was burned on April 1, 1935 and the present dedicated June 10. 1937 with a later addition in 1952. The first church came to North Collins in june, 1818-a Congregational Church attended in the beginning by only the members of one family, that of john Stanclift, who exchanged the lot occupied by the present Congregational Church for a grant further along School Street given by the Holland Land Company. A Methodist Church was built in 1848, later sold to the Congregationalists. The building was moved and is now Pilgrim Hall. St. john's Roman Catholic Church was organ- ized in 1904, Sacred Heart in 1907. Both are today a part of Holy Spirit parish. Today good roads have been built throughout and there is adequate fire protection in each com- munity. The village volunteer fire department was organized in 1898, those of Lawtons, Langford and New Oregon within the last decade. Ethelyn Weller North Collins, N.Y. RICHARD THORNBURY C1900-19595 The Hippocratic Oath was not just words to be uttered for the moment when the title of Doctor of Medicine was bestowed on Dr. Richard Thornbury in 1924. This oath to heal was his guiding light. Through administrating to physical infirrnities, Dr. Thornbury also became counselor and friend. His passing has left a deep void which cannot easily be filled. The pupils of North Collins Central School loved and respected Dr. Thornbury, who was appointed school physician July 1, 1936. Because of the high esteem held for him, we, the staff of the Reverie feel it fitting and proper to give tribute to Dr. Thornbury in this, the yearbook of 1959.
