Stan Shurling Jack Chastain Pat Autry Senior - Split End NEWNAN RACES TO 20-10 When the No. 1 defense meets the No. 1 offense something has to give and speed proved to be the downfall of the Eagles. Newnan's super star Steve Henderson broke loose in the second half to carry the Tigers past the Eagles. A close first half ended with Newnan in the lead 10-3. The Eagles came back as usual to score late in the ball game even though they still fell short. Gruber returns punt. Sophomore - Center Senior - Center Eagle offense set to go against Newnan. EAGLES TIED BY HORNETS, 7-7 Though the Eagles dominated the game, Hapeville managed to gain a tie by returning an intercepted pass 104 yards. Fine defense highlighted the game for the Eagles with two fumble recoveries and three pass interceptions brought about by the tough defense. Another fine aspect of the game this night was punt returns by Tommy Gruber, who was stopped by the last man. Tommy Gru- ber's only touchdown of his high school career came in the first quarter to put the Eagles ahead 7-0. The Eagle offense showed its ability to control the ball though they only tallied seven points. This tie proved to be almost as bitter as a loss. RAMS SQUEEZE BY EAGLES 10-7 The Eagles' first loss came in the most questioned game of the sea- son. Two disputed calls marred the Eagles' hopes for victory, the first of which came on a fourth and goal attempt by Rams in the second quarter. The second came on a pass play, late in the game, which could have resulted in the winning touch- down for the Eagles. Buice BULLS up the middle. Steve Davenport No. 2 pass receiver in the Region. EAGLES OUTLAST TROUP 13 7 After a heartbreaking defeat, the Eagles next traveled to LaGrange to cap their second win of the young season. All the scoring of the game came during the first half, with Tommy Hewitt scoring once and setting up the sec- ond Eagle touchdown with an unbelievable catch. The Tigers' only score came on a fake punt in the second quarter. The second half was a defensive struggle with neither team coming within scoring distance. Barry Martin Junior - Guard HIGHLANDERS BEAT EAGLES IN FOURTH PERIOD 99 Though the Eagles contained the Region 4-A Champs for three quarters, taking the lead during the second half, they were unable to hold them through the fourth. At halftime the heavily favored Headland team found themselves tied, 66. The Eagle defense held strong the third quarter, and early in the fourth Tommy Hewitt kicked his second field goal of the year to put the Eagles out in front, 9-6. This score held for awhileg then a pass play put the Highlanders in the lead, 12-9. 0: Shurling springs Davenport. EAGLES TROUNCE RUSSELL, 21-0 Fourteen Seniors playing their last Homecoming game are a hard com- bination to beat. This is exactly what the Wildcats were up against. The Eagle offense exploded for two touchdowns in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 14-O halftime lead. The Eagles took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove in for their third and final score of the game. Orr scores against Headland. 'Six Leslie Chatam Junior - Guard Down by three, with time running out and their backs to the goal, the Eagles fought to regain the ball. Then on fourth and goal a High- lander pass caromed off the hands of two eagle defenders and right into the hands of a Headland re- ceiver in the end zone.
