THE EAGLE I96S Wim was Wi S223 NGRTH CLAYTON SENIOR HIGH SCHCOL College Park, Georgia Eagles get thc season at home underway. Foreword The year 1968 marks the Beginning,' of our new school. lt has been a year filled with moments oflaughter, excitement, friendship, and study. Although many of these moments may seem insignificant, these are the things that make a year memorable. The Seniors leave North Clayton to go on to college, vocational school or a job. Underclassmen stay behind, looking forward to the year they will be seniors. To those leaving, may the '68 Eagle serve to remind you of The Spirit of the Beginningn. To those who stay, may the '68 Eagle inspire you to even greater heights in the future. Deborah Denson Editor 2 MW, ...- .. Dedication The ,68 Eagle is proudly dedicated to a person for whom everyone has the greatest admiration and respect. As a teacher and friend of the students, he has done much to instill in them those qualities which will best suit them for their roles as mature, useful adults. As a Social Studies teacher his enthusiasm and knowledge have helped students to gain an interesting insight into the areas of history and government. His abilities are also exhibited in the capable leadership and guidance he has given to the Student Council. You are the symbol of North Clayton Senior High School, the symbol of friendship and belonging. Each student is a part of you, and you are a part of each student. By your friendly personal attitude towards ali, you have tied our class and the school together. For these reasons the Class of 1968 dedicates the Eagle to you, Mr. J. E. EAGLES DEFEAT JONESBORO IN FINAL SECONDS 7-0 Once again a never say die attitude proved to be the difference in a close contest. After four quarters of see-saw battle, the Eagles mustered full strength and drove from their own territory to inside the Cardinal five yard line. With 19 seconds left on the clock, Dale Buice blasted across for the lone score of the game. This game held special significance for the Eagles as it was their first home victory in two years. RAMS SQUEEZE BY EAGLES 10-7 The Eagles' first loss came in the most questioned game of the sea- son. Two disputed calls marred the Eagles' hopes for victory, the first of which came on a fourth and goal attempt by Rams in the second quarter. The second came on a pass play, late in the game, which could have resulted in the winning touch- down for the Eagles. Buice BULLS up the middle. Steve Davenport No. 2 pass receiver in the Region. EAGLES OUTLAST TROUP 13 7 After a heartbreaking defeat, the Eagles next traveled to LaGrange to cap their second win of the young season. All the scoring of the game came during the first half, with Tommy Hewitt scoring once and setting up the sec- ond Eagle touchdown with an unbelievable catch. The Tigers' only score came on a fake punt in the second quarter. The second half was a defensive struggle with neither team coming within scoring distance. Newnan's super star Steve Henderson broke loose in the second half to carry the Tigers past the Eagles. A close first half ended with Newnan in the lead 10-3. The Eagles came back as usual to score late in the ball game even though they still fell short. Gruber returns punt. Sophomore - Center Senior - Center Eagle offense set to go against Newnan. EAGLES TIED BY HORNETS, 7-7 Though the Eagles dominated the game, Hapeville managed to gain a tie by returning an intercepted pass 104 yards. Fine defense highlighted the game for the Eagles with two fumble recoveries and three pass interceptions brought about by the tough defense. Another fine aspect of the game this night was punt returns by Tommy Gruber, who was stopped by the last man. Tommy Gru- ber's only touchdown of his high school career came in the first quarter to put the Eagles ahead 7-0. The Eagle offense showed its ability to control the ball though they only tallied seven points. This tie proved to be almost as bitter as a loss. Tommy Gruber, MOST VALUABLE BACK Edward Houston Mike Gruber Kirby Glaze Senior - Guard Freshman - Guard Senior - Guard Barry Martin Junior - Guard HIGHLANDERS BEAT EAGLES IN FOURTH PERIOD 99 Though the Eagles contained the Region 4-A Champs for three quarters, taking the lead during the second half, they were unable to hold them through the fourth. At halftime the heavily favored Headland team found themselves tied, 66. The Eagle defense held strong the third quarter, and early in the fourth Tommy Hewitt kicked his second field goal of the year to put the Eagles out in front, 9-6. This score held for awhileg then a pass play put the Highlanders in the lead, 12-9. 0: Shurling springs Davenport. EAGLES TROUNCE RUSSELL, 21-0 Fourteen Seniors playing their last Homecoming game are a hard com- bination to beat. This is exactly what the Wildcats were up against. The Eagle offense exploded for two touchdowns in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 14-O halftime lead. The Eagles took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove in for their third and final score of the game. Orr scores against Headland. 'Six Leslie Chatam Junior - Guard Down by three, with time running out and their backs to the goal, the Eagles fought to regain the ball. Then on fourth and goal a High- lander pass caromed off the hands of two eagle defenders and right into the hands of a Headland re- ceiver in the end zone. The Eagles' offense accounted for over 300 total yards, while the defense held the Bears to less than 100, but fum- bles and pass interceptions kept the Eag- les out of the end zone. Five times the Eagles were inside the Bears' 20 and were Miller looks to sideline for defensive signals. ' EAGLES UPSET LAKESHORE LANCERS, I0-3 Since it was their last game of the season and the last game to be played on North Clayton's field, it was only appropriate that it should be their best. The Eagles lead most of the game. The highlight of the season came in the closing min- utes. With the Eagles lead- ing l0-3, the Lancers had moved to first and goal on the three yard line. Here the defense proved their value of the words, PRIDE AND DESIRE. Four times the Lancers tried the Eagle line for a total of one yard. The scoreboard tells the story. Alan Neyhart Tim Townsend Junior - Split End Freshman - Split End 51 Mike Thomas Senior - Tight End able to tally only three points. These came on the third field goal ofthe year for Tommy Hewitt. At this time it gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead that lasted through the first half. The Bears sustained only one drive during the game, this one good for the winning seven points. This was undoubtably one of the Eagles' best showings of the year, but the end zone eluded them as the score remained, 7-3.
