SPEECH I LEFT TO RIGHT: Karen Gartley, Ruth Pierce, Nancy Gregory, Karen Kirn, Lee Atkins, and Sandra Pavlovic. I speak for democracy. GORDANA STE YANOVICH North Chicago has had the most successful speech year in its history. The newly organized debate team of 1958 began competing on the varsity level. In the final three months of the season, the team de- bated in tournaments at Northwestern University, Augustans College and Navy Pier. The record for the team was 33 and 19. Joyce Peters, Ed Dolinar, Julie Butkus, and Peggy Skorpinski were the varsity members. The Illinois High School District Speech meet was held at N.C.C. H.S. Karen Kirn took second in original oratory to qualify for sec- tionals. N.C.C.H.S. entered several events, including a cutting from Twelve Angry Women. The third annual N.C.C.H.S. Student Senate was organized and began debating national problems in the speech classes. The year was highly successful and carried the name of N.C.C.H.S. throughout the state.
