VARSITY BASKETBALL BACK ROW: Coach Woods, Ed Jakaitis. Wendell Hall, Bob Armstead, Jerry Bernardi, Gerald Oglesby. David Bolger, Richard Dunn. FRONT ROW: John Patterson, Andy Frazier, Alex Phillips, Maurice Guins, Ron Riedel. S ' s' Coach Ed Wood’s high-flying War hawks, always a serious threat for any team, soared to new heights during the 1958-’59 season. During the regular season, the Hawks emerged victorious in 21 of 23 games and captured their second consecutive Tri-County Conference title with a 10-0 record. The Hawks started off slowly this past season, winning their first two games by slim margins and then having their wings clipped at Highland Park. However, after the Thanksgiving vacation, the Hawks found their potential by dropping highly touted Elgin on the opponent's court. Adding a fitting climax to the first Bloom game was a 75 foot heave by Jerry Bernardi at the final buzzer which caromed off the backboard into the net. During the season, the rebounding of Bob Armstead, Jerry Bernardi, Dave Bolger, and Jerry Oglesby was outstanding, as was the ball handling of Alex Phillips and the aggressiveness and all around play of Wendell Hall and Maurice Guins. In the North Chicago Regional, the Hawks jumped off to a quick start in downing Lake Forest and New Trier. The championship game was the first time that rivals Waukegan and North Chicago appeared together in a varsity basketball game. The Bulldogs proved too much for the Hawks, who, though never ahead, never gave up. After being downed by sixteen points in the third period, the Hawks fought back to within three points of winning the game. The spirit of the Hawks throughout the year was that of victor)'. However, in each of their three defeats, the Hawks and their fans showed that they can be good losers as well as good winners. Although everyone wants to see his team win, there must be a loser. Therefore, the main theme of basketball, as in all sports and games, is good sportsmanship.
