Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1970 volume:

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and atimeto build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn', and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a timeto speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. The 1970 Senior class and Archive Staff is delighted to honor Rev. Raymond Levang. DEDICATION DR. G. RAYMOND CARLSON He's gone now . .. But we'll still think about him as the man who used to sit at the top desk and make decisions and spur on the building pro- gram and travel to speak in behalf ofthecollege and yet still have enough time fora friendlysmile and even take time out to at- tend our basketball games when possible. He's obtained a higher position now with more responsibility and less time and all the fringe benefits that come with more responsibility and less time . .. But it's still fun to reminisce! It was decided during one of these times of reminiscence that it would be fitting for the Senior class and the Archive staff to show their appreciation for him by dedicating this year's Archive to him. This we have done knowing that we'll probably keep the Archive forthe rest of our life just as we will keep our memories of him. The 1970 Archive is dedicated to Dr. C-. Raymond Carlson. ff: 81: ., xhywvu. 31 .? y. , TOURTELLOTTE GUEST CENTER This colonial mansion was a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Jacob Francis Tourtel- lotte to the Deaconess Movement, which was affiliated with the Asbury Hospital Corporation. The building, which is constructed of grey bedford stone and grey brick, was started in 1913 and dedicated in October of 1915. The original estimates for construction were $60,000, but reached $150,000 when completed. The building is presently being used as a con- ference and guest center. w-g +'- '.7 9 ! 5.21.. MEN'S RESIDENCE Ihls building was used as a hospital by the Methodist denomination. Asbury Hospital, as it was known, was started in 1992, completed m the fall of 1923, and dedicated January 8, 1924. The building was purchased by North Central Bible College in August, 1969, as a part of the expansion program of the college. The ministry and laity of the Assemblies of God have shown their confidence in him by naming him one of their Assistant General Superintendents. His family of friends among the faculty and student body and staff at the col- lege extend a hearty thank you to G. Raymond Carlson. We will follow you, Brother Carlson, with our prayers. I readily recognize that the Apostle used this expression for those who were his converts, nevertheless I wish to borrow his words. He wrote: Ye are our irejoicingi 2 Corinthians 1:14 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye. . . ? This is the way I feel about you. Your victories and successes are my joy. YOur struggles and problems are my concerns. These years which you have spent at NORTH CENTRAL have been very important ones . Every aspect of your life has been influenced. The contributions you make to society. . .the kind of a family you raise. . . the way in which you cope with both the victories and defeats that make up this life of ours. . .the manner in which you do God's will. . . these and many other extremely vital matters will depend on what you make of the training which you have received. This we share in common - I, too, am leaving NORTH CENTRAL this year. Only I will be gone before you. By graduation day you will have become better acquainted with my successor, Rev. Cyril E. Homer. I know you will have learned to love, respect, and appreciate President Homer greatly in the time which he will have served the college before your graduation. He and I and the faculty wish you God's very best. Let excellence, not just acceptability, characterize your life. Holding Christ preeminent, making Him first, doing all things as unto Him can be nothing but a synonym for excellence. Go in His strength and He will grant you the success that He alone can give. Sincerely yours , President GRC:jk PROGRESS OF NCBC Birthplace of North Central North Central Bible Institute Student body of 1942 Rev. FJ. Lindquist Our founder Change of N.C.B.l. to N.C.B.C. l8 MSELmMWW Proposed Chapel-Auditorium Complex North Central Bible College had its humble origin 40 years ago. In 1930 the Minneapolis Gospel Tabernacle was the location where 31 students gathered to learn more of the Word of God. Due to an increasing enrollment, larger facilities were needed. In 1937 the Asbury Methodist Hospital, located at 910 Elliot Ave., was purchased. With the expanded facilities now at their disposal, the administration saw fit to set up a Business Education Dept. In the spring of 1957, the name North Central Bible Institute was officially changed to North Cen- tral Bible College. Rev. F.J. Lindquist was at the helm when North Central first began and continued as presi- dent until he retired in 1961. Dr. C. Raymond Carlson was named as his successor. Dr. Carl- son led us onward, and in 1969, under his direction, we acquired the adjacent property pre- viously known as Asbury Methodist Hospital and Tourtellotte Memorial Home. In the summer of 1969, Dr. Carlson was elected by the General Council to the position of Assistant General Supt. The Board of Regents met, and through God's guidance, proceeded to find a replacement in the person of Rev. Cyril Homer. President Homer is presently bear- ing the responsibilities of his office as well as taking an active interest in the weifare of the students - just as the two men preceding him have done so well. Dr. G. Raymond Carlson Rev. Cyril Homer ?1 a time for ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF REGENTS givwh Y 3 3 4x SEATED: Rev. H.H. Rhode, Secretary; Rev. S.H. Peterson, Rev. E.M. Clark; Rev. S.E. Johnson; Mr. J. The Board of Regents is the principal governing body of North Central Bible College. Each of the five sponsoring Districts are represented by the District Superintendent, an ordained minister, and a prominent layman. The College President, by virtue of his office, is also a partici- pating member of this board. These gentlemen meet as necessity de- mands to review progress and finances, establish school policies, and employ administrative and faculty personnel. This year has been of particular importance to the board, in as much as they have had to deal with problems concerning the purchase of new property and the choosing of a new school President, in addition to their normal activities. 22 BOARD OF ADMINISTRATION LEFT TO RIGHT: Rev. L. B. Larsen; Rev. D. H. Mapson; Rev. M. C. Nelson; Rev. Raymond Levang; Rev. Cyril Homer, Chairman. The Board of Administration functions directly be- neath the supervision of the Board of Regents. It is re- sponsible for the promotion and operation of the Col- lege. This Board is composed of five members, each of whom has devoted much time toward the develop- ment programs of the College, the institution's daily proceedings, as well as its academic and business policies. 23 DEAN OF STUDENTS REV. ROBERT BAYLESS We are more than pleased that the Lord has provided North Central with a man possessing the qualities of leadership seIf-evident in our new Dean of Students. Although he constitutes a new addition to the faculty and administra- tion, we are readily coming to know him. Rev, Bayless is a graduate of South Western Bi- ble College. As an acting Indiana pastor during the preceeding sixteen years, he has had op- portunity to develope a fine reputation as a man of boundless energy and zeal. He is presently serving North Central in the capacity of Dean of Students, acting head of the Discipline and Rules Committee, and also instructs a class in personal counseling. 24 DEAN OF EDUCATION REV. M. C. NELSON As an educator, counselor, and Army Chaplain possessing many years of experience from which to draw knowledge gained, our Dean of Education is rather adept at being able to rem- edy almost any situational problem the average student might devise. Rev. Nelson directs the entire educational program including curricu- lum, faculty, and of course, the students themselves. His duties as Registrar include matters pertain- ing to class schedules and credit requirements for graduation. Dean Nelson is a man greatly admired and a counselor well frequented. These qualities coupled with his daily duties well afford him the position as being one of the busiest men on campus. 48s DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT North Central's public relations would be quite incomplete if it were not for the boundless zeal of our Director of Develop- ment and Business Man- agement, REV. D. H. MAPSON. His responsi- bilities include the finan- cial development of the college, student finances, purchasing, management, and maintenance. Bro. Mapson's extra-curricular activities include a great deal of traveling and speaking in behalf of our coHege. PUBLIC RELATIONS A new and fine addition to the public relations staff at NCBC is KEITH HEERMANN. His ideas and creative pho- tography assist in promoting public interest in the business and expansion affairs of NCBC. He is managing editor of our quarterly publication, Thrust. His work can also be seen in various pieces of literature found around the college. We are glad to welcome Rev. Heermann to the staff and we look forward to more of his creative work in the future. They also met two hours each week to maintain and promote Mis- sions at North Central Bible College. Bi-monthly meetings with the Prayer Band officers helped keep them informed. Knowing that the burden of Missions was being developed among our stu- dents made all the long hours of work worthwhile. The Fall Home Missions Festival and the Spring Foreign Missions Convention were the spiritual highlights of the school year. The theme for the year, Time Is Running Out , expressed the ur- gency of the hour and was a constant Challenge for the staff. The prayer bands offer opportunities for participation, in order that the student may bet- ter feel the burden for our missionaries. Through the extension program there are many opportunities to become more actively involved in missions. SPECIAL MINISTRIES PRAYER BAND: SEATED: A. Lee, Presi- dent; C. Paget, Secretary; C. BORN TO SERVE THE LORD 102 103 CHRISTIAN SERVICE The Christian Service Staff, through the Christian Service Department, tries to give each student some practical help in addition to what each per- son learns in the classroom. The Staff endeavors to broaden our knowledge as pertaining to active Christian ministry. Every Monday morning during Chapel, the Staff provides a program with themes and speakers in the areas of The Pastor's Wife , The Associate Pastor , The Effective Sunday School Superin- tendent ,am0ng others. Not only are they involved in the Chapel services, but they correlate programs such as Operation Outreach, Teen Challenge, Invade, and working in churches on weekends, thereby involving ev- ery student in practical experience. Surely man must have sung with joy in his early abode. Melodious melody within the hearts of men has existed con- tinually since that time. This melody occurs in deviant forms in various cultures. Music serves many purposes w to encourage, to pacify, to strengthen. Perhaps no other form of human expression is so moving and capable of evoking emotions of equal purity and nobility. Our greatest repertoire of early music was Closely related to religion. This is clearly understood when we realize that music stems from man's deepest emotions. Like the Bible, our sacred mu- sic has survived through the centuries. As an integral part of North Central Bible College, sacred music pronounces its ecstatic utterances on many lives. What a thrill to know that someday weill join in that heavenly Chorus, where we may express in fullest measure the hopes and joys of which we singtoday. w wwwm m A A4 , WWW M e wW u v ww. Many hearts were blessed and Challenged as they presented their sacred concert in various churches in the Twin Cities, and on the annual springtour. The concert included a variety of songs and arrange- ments, and gave opportunity to express their love to God in many different ways. Each man spoke of the Home Missions program in general, and dealt with the need of his individual state. Booths set up in the halls depicted a small picture of what Iowa, Illinois, South Dako- ta, Wisconsin and Northern Michigan, and Minnesota, are doing in Home Missions. Many Pioneer Pastor families had an enjoy- able Thanksgiving dinner with the money and food raised at the Trading Post. All these factors contributed to a successful first Home Missions Festival. Seasons change and one time fades into another, leav- ing a life time of reminiscence accompanied by nostalgia. Nostalgia assumes many moods, but usually happier ones, which leads us to believe that life has its little concessions. Moods ... nostalgia ... reminiscence ... history . . . an Archive . .. that was our job. It is the sincere desire of the 1970 Archive staff that your years of reminiscence will be made more vivid and accented with a distinct note of merriment when on occasion you rediscover the memories captured within this volume. As Co-Editors of the 1970 Archive, we would like to express our sin- cere appreciation to all of the students and administrators who helped us in any way to make this book a reality. Without your help there would not be an Archive. We would like to say a very special thanks to: Gordon Seefeldt, our fine photographer who dedicated so much of his time; Rev. Keith Heermann, who helped us with pic- tures, ideas, or whatever we needed; and Holiday Studios for their helpful services in photography. 192 j g , fa 32kg , Q23 43 meHo , b. .obmi ,NXMEWWMthWMMWan wig awaw AN To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose A- undertheheaven: xjwwdfw A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; AthnetokHLandathnetoheahathnetokneakdowm, and aAmetobquup; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time u3dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; Athnetorend, andathnetosewqathnetokeepsHence, anda thnetospeak; Athneu3kwe,muianwmtohauxathneofwanandathneof peace.
