Freshman Quartet page forty-eight THE MINISTRY OF SONG There is only one universal language that touches the entire scale of human emotions. This language is music. Music overcomes barriers that language, race, and creed have been unable to conquer. Inspired by its stirring rythm and influence, men forget fear and rush into battle facing death while, on the other hand, a gentle lullaby sweetly sung puts a baby to sleep. Outside of the Christian church there has been little or no song used in re- ligious worship. The heathen gods were honored with only rude vocal and instrumental noises while the Church of God under all dispensations has been a singing church. The Christian Hymn and Gospel song are a natural development of the Hebrew psalm just as Christianity is the consummation of the Iewish religion. Thought is deeper than all speech; Feeling deeper than all thought. The Hymn is a response of the human heart to the great truths of the Bible that fill the highest and deepest needs of man. Again it is an expression of genuine devotion that calls forth feeling of worship, love to God, con- secration, loyalty, a sense of sin, need of forgiveness and grace, joy in accepting salvation, and eagerness for the salvation of others. Sacred song received its greatest coronation when the Baptism of the Holy Spirit vitalized and organized the Christian Church in apostolic times. The great heritage of the dying Iewish church, its fundamental ideas, its laws, its prophets, its hope of the Messiah were now transformed into reality. The church was filled with joy and praises to God in spite of suffering. Paul and Silas sang in the Philippian jail. The new wine of Christian joy burst out into song. lames said, Is any merry? Let him sing songs A singing church is usually a triumphant church. A singing church is an overcoming church. Let the ministry of song express your spiritual experi- ences for they concentrate the comforting truths of the Gospel and add emphasis to the preaching of the Gospel. They are complementary and i must work together as a team. North Central Bible Institute fully realizes and appreciates the ministry of song as well as the ministry of the Word. This is well illustrated in our numerous musical aggregations, such as the eighty voice choir, the orches- tra, rnale chorus, ladies chorus, the Gospel Broadcasters male quartette, the Crusaders male quartette, the many ladies trios, string trios, brass trios, soloists, and many other fine musical units. eTheodore E. Felt wearied with the conflict and the strife. And all the needful discipline of life. And while I thought on these as given to me. My trial tests of faith and love to be, It seemed as it I never could be sure That faithful to the end I should endure. And thus. no longer trusting to his might Who says. We walk by faith and not by sight. Doubting. and almost yielding to despair. The thought arose. My cross I cannot hear. Far heavier its weight must surely be. Than those of others which I daily see: Oh! it I might another burden choose. Methinks I should not fear my crown to lose. A solemn silence reigned on all around: E'en Nature's voices uttered not a sound: The evening shadows seemed of peace to tell. And sleep upon my weary spirit tell. A moment's pause.-and then a heavenly light Beamed full upon my wondering. raptured sight; Angels on silvery wings seemed everywhere. And angels' music filled the balmy air. Then One, more fair than all the rest to see. One, to whom all the others bowed the knee. Came gently to me. as I trembling lay. And, Follow me, he said, Ivam the Way. Then. speaking thus, he led me far above. And there, beneath a canopy of love. Crosses of divers shape and size were seen. Larger and smaller than my own had been. And one there was most beauteous to behold.-- A little one. with jewels set in gold: Ah! this, methouqht. I can with comfort wear, For it will be an easy one to bear. And so the little cross I quickly took. But all at once my Irame beneath it shook 'l'he sparkling iewels. tair were they to see. But far too heavy was their weight for me. Chas. Hobart. This may not be. I cried, and looked again, To see it any there could ease my pain; But. one by one I passed them slowly by. Till on a lovely one I cast my eye. Fair flowers around its sculptured term entwined. And grace and beauty seemed in it combined; Wondering I gunman still I wondered more. To think so many should have passed it o'er. But oh. that form so beautiful to see. Soon made its hidden sorrows known to me: Thorns lay beneath those flowers and colors Iair: Sorrowing I said. This cross I may not bear. And so it was with each and all around. Not one to suit my need could there be found; Weeping I laid each heavy burden down. As my guide gently said. No cross.eno crown. At length to him I raised my saddened heart: He knew its sorrows. bade its doubts depart: Be not afraid. he said. but trust in me; My perfect love shall now be shown to thee. And then, with lightened eyes and willing feet, Again I turned. my earthly cross to meet: With forward footsteps, turning not aside. For iear some hidden evil might betide; And there, in the prepared. appointed way. Listening to hear. and ready to obey.- A cross 'I quickly found, of plainest iorm. With only words at love inscribed thereon. With thankfulness I raised it from the rest. And ioyfully acknowledged it the best.- The only one. of all the many there. That I could feel was good for me to bear. And while I thus my chosen one confessed. I saw a heavenly brightness on it rest: And as I bent. my burden to sustain. I recognized my own old cross again. But. oh! how different did it seem to be, Now I had learned its preciousness to see! No longer could I unbelieving say. Perhaps another is a better way. Ah. no! henceforth my one desire shall be. That he, who knows me best, should choose for me: And so, whate'er his love sees good to send, I'll trust it's best.-because he knows the end. page sixty-four A 3 ; .2- 43'??? 2 4'51 933. TRUE WORSHIP O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness . True worship is not neces- sarily the position of the body, nor words that come from the lips. God has told us in His word that they who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Therefore worship must be from the heart. Iames would place emphasis on the act, or works, rather than words. In order to properly worship God our thought life must be good. In the fourth chapter of Philippians, the eighth verse, we read, Finally, brethren, what- soever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. This verse directs one to properly control his thoughts, and if we follow these instructions carefully we shall not come short in worshipping God in our thought life. Iames speaks of the tongue that would both bless God the Father and there- with curse men, that out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. It would be impossible to include true worship with these acts, for, If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but de- ceiveth his own heart,' this man's religion is vain. True worship is impossible without sacrifice. Abraham proved his sincerity in offering his son. This offer brought pleasure to the father heart of God and blessing upon Abraham and his seed. Too much of our worship is simply lip service and is devoid of sacrifice. We see then that true worship is more than the bended knee and a flow of phrases unto God. This is included, but a life full of good works, sacri- fice, and proper thinking sends up toward heaven a sweet aroma that is well pleasing unto our God. Amen. Ivan 0. From this small beginning the school now numbers between 50 to 60 each Sunday. This has been largely accomplished through contacting folks in their homes, with the help of some N. C. B. I. students. REV. W. A. Katter For the past several years, Rev Katter has been Director of Practical Work at North Cen- tral. At least 25 regular meetings are held each week by the various Practical Work Groups, besides a great many calls that come in each week for special speaking, singing, and instrumental engagements. The Lord, as a result of these meetings, has added to the church those that were being saved . page eighty-six Northfield Gospel Chapel, N orthfield, M innesota. W. C. A., for the annual Iunior-Senior banquet. The military theme was in evidence throughout the program, and in the table decorations, favors, and place cards. Between the after-dinner speeches on Take Christ, Live Christ, and Give Chirst, beautiful musical selections were given. The closing scene was one which the Seniors will long remember. As the hall was darkened, a curtain opened; and before us was a scene picturing the life of two soldiers- one a soldier of the Cross with a pulpit and a Christian flag; the other a soldier of our country with a cannon and the American flag. The back-drop pictured the scene at Calvary. The Cross Between was illuminated. After the Junior Class President spoke out the Challenge to the Seniors to proclaim the message of the Cross, Taps was sounded; and the lighted Cross burned the message, e Give the Saviour, who died on Calvary, to all men everywhere -on each heart. With the singing of the chorus, He's Coming Soon, a very en- joyable evening of Christian fellowship came to an end. page ninety-three C lass N ame C lass M one C lass Song Class Colors Class F lower Seniwt 86am; Begend Couriers of the Cross. The student body is divid- ed into nine bands that meet regularly. They study the geographic, economic, and religious aspects of various coun- tries. Offerings are taken each month to help support our graduates Who are laboring on the foreign field. These prayer groups give the students an opportunity to learn to intercede for souls and uphold the missionaries in prayer. The prayer to the Lord of the harvest has been an- swered for He has sent forth labourers into His whitened harvest field -- THE WORLD. To promote fellowship a- mong the graduates and to encourage them in their ministry for the Lord, the Alumni Association was organized in 1934. The Alumni Room in the Institute, with modernistic chrome and leather furnishings, is maintained by the association. Splendid articles on religious education, a condensation of a religious best seller , as well as a full digest of news about the large North Central family, are contained in the North Cen- tralian, the official organ of the association. The Alumni Association holds its banquet at commencement time to receive the graduating senior class into its rariks, to renew acquaintances, and to exchange ideas on how to better the work of the Lord. The annual business meeting is held at this time also. As the organization presses forward, may it meet With ever-increasing success in its work for the Master. page one hux dred thirty nine ALUMNI ARE LABORING IN THE UTTERMOST PARTS OF THE EARTH Some N.
