In the athletics ' department, baseball, basket- ball for both boys and girls, football and track were offered. As NC was made up of freshmen only, the teams were rather inexperienced but en- thused . South Central, Lewis and Clark as we know it today, burned down in 1910 . As a result, South Central students were transferred to NC. During that period, the two schools joined forces as The Spokane High School. Both NC and SC temporarily abandoned their own school colors and took on the Blue and White . In the Spring of 1912, South Central students returned to their home across the river, the new Lewis and Clark High School. Thus, the first graduating class of North Central proudly spent its senior year, 1913, under dear old Red and Black! Just watch us--ask us— We ' ll show you all how You can make yourselves seen. A Tasty Cafeteria Lunch ... 10 c Four years have we spent ' neath the Red and the Black; Let ' s give ' em a Cheer! Ra! Ra! They entered North Central as freshmen. The student body consisted of 197 boys and 291 girls; 500 students were expected by the se- mester. Although the student body was small, Mr. Hargraves, the principal, noted that a definite spirit of loyalty to the school had been shown by students and faculty since the build- ing ' s opening in the Fall of 1908. When school opened, there were 28 rooms finished with 52 yet to be completed. Mr. Held, the architect, admitted with pride that Spokane would have the finest high school in the West. And oh, what a school it was! We have a fine standing, We ' ve made a big hit With our teachers dear! Ha! Ha! The classes offered varied little with those of to- day. There were scientific, classical, manual arts, commercial, and literary courses of study. In February 1909 the cafeteria opened. Clam chowder, ham or peanut butter sandwiches, pies, fruits, milk, coffee, and hot chocolate were of- fered. A good menu was promised; any three articles of one ' s choice sold for 10 cents . At a 1909 convocation, a speaker proclaimed that the first thing to make a person go down and out was smoking cigarettes and working slot machines .
